    • @kingdeedee
      @kingdeedee 8 місяців тому +2

      I agree. While he definitely didnt have the best rosters in Washington, the whole “he doesn’t have a good team” excuse becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when the lead star doesn’t do anything to make his teammates better. Look at Jimmy Butler for example, we cant say his team last year was better than the teams they beat (at least Boston or Milwaukee anyway)

  • @austinlastname6110
    @austinlastname6110 8 місяців тому +119

    His teams were actually better than most realize. He had all stars in Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison on his team with a few good role players that knew their roles like Brendan Haywood and Deshawn Stevenson. This was also in a weak eastern conference and in an era where stars were more spread out rather than making super teams. The only reason his teams didn’t do better was because Gil is a terrible leader that only thinks about his own stats. He even said himself “I don’t care if you put me in for two minutes, I’m taking 18 shots” or more recently “I’ll get in and I’m chucking that MF”. He’s not a team player or winning player. He was just playing for the clout and money.

      I think that is partly true, he's not Minnesota KG or mid 2000s Kobe, but him, Butler and Jamison all had overlapping skillsets and no one who was better than ok defensively.
      It's weird to me considering the Wizards traded for both Butler and Jamison that they never thought to pair Arenas with say Andrei Kirilenko, Marcus Camby or Shane Battier. He's still too much of a head case to be the #1 guy on a championship team, but those are the guys he needed more than another 20+ PPG scorer.

  • @ant4613
    @ant4613 8 місяців тому +27

    I disagree with the idea that he had a weak supporting cast, and I see people in the comments saying he had "terrible teammates"... really? I know a lot of players who would've loved to have prime Antawn Jamison and prime Caron Butler on their team. Not saying they were amazing, they were far from that, but if GIlbert was really him, he could have at least won more than 1 playoff series in his entire career. Truth is, he always came up short in the playoffs.
    In 04-05, they played a weak (they were good defensively but that roster is really thin and it's hard to believe they were as good as they were looking back) Chicago Bulls team in the first round. This was the only playoff series win of Gilbert's career.
    Game 1: Gilbert had 9 points on an abysmal 3-19 from the field. Larry Hughes had 31. In a lower scoring era, he got a 31 piece from his teammate. 3 other players in double figures. Bulls won, perhaps things would have been different if Gilbert had a decent game rather than a horrible one.
    Game 2: Gilbert had a great game, 39 points on 14-25 FG. Hughes with 19, Jamison with 18. He had help, they just lost, Bulls up 2-0.
    Game 3: Gilbert with 32 points, 10-24 from the field. 3 other teammates with 20+ points. Three. Other. Teammates. With 20+. Wizards win.
    Game 4: Gilbert had 23 on 6-12 from the field. Juan Dixon, who was not having a good series, went off for 35 points off the bench, helping the Wizards tie up the series. No help for Gilbert though, right?
    Game 5: Big Game 5, series tied 2-2. Time for Gilbert to show up and lead his team. What does he do? 16 points, 5-14 from the field. That's not gonna do it, unfortunately... But wait... the Wizards ended up winning this game by 2 points. How does this happen? Arenas hit the game winner. Props for that! But how it really happened, the Wizards shot 56.1% as a team despite Gilbert's poor performance. The entire starting lineup finished in double figures on incredible efficiency. Larry Hughes with 33 points on 11-24 FG, Antawn Jamison with 19 points on 9-13 FG, Brendan Haywood with 17 points on 8-10 FG.
    Game 6: Gilbert had 19 points on, again, horrible efficiency... 6-24 from the field. That's 25%. The Wizards would close out the series in 6 games, winning this game by just 3 points. The entire starting lineup in double figures yet again, Larry Hughes with 21, Antawn Jamison with 19.
    So, the only playoff series win of Gilbert's entire career came when he underperformed and he supposedly had "no help"... or "terrible teammates"... in reality, his teammates carried him to his only playoff series win. And this was against a Chicago Bulls team led by Kirk Hinrich. Not much else needs to be said.
    The Wizards went on to play the Heat, and they got swept. It was peak D. Wade along with Shaq, the year before the Heat won the title. Heat were just better, but that series was more of the same. Gilbert averaged 24.5 points on 38.2 FG%. Jamison averaged 19, Hughes 18, Haywood 13, Dixon 10.3.
    The year after, where Gilbert had his "famous duel" with Lebron... you know the most well known game, Game 5, where Gilbert had 44 on great efficiency and Lebron had 45? Antawn Jamison had 32 points on 13-24 from the field. Caron Butler had 20 11 5 and 4 steals on 50 FG%. His teammates were terrible though, right? I'm not cherry picking certain games either (Game 5 is just the most well known from that series), look at every single game and you could say the same thing. It's ridiculous that this false narrative is starting to become what people believe because it couldn't be more bullshit, and it's actually the complete opposite. He had A LOT of help. He found no playoff success because he was a selfish scorer who was nowhere near as good as he thinks he was. He didn't make anybody around him better. He had 3 "elite" seasons in the NBA and that's it. Even before the injuries, nothing he showed would lead me to believe he would ever win a championship, even at the time. He didn't have what it takes to lead a team to a championship. That's just the truth.

      Jeffries was a great defender as well. I hate that myth that he had no help. The year he was injured, Jameson averaged 30 in the play-offs. Like iverson and Westbrook, he should have been a 2, but refused to be off ball. As a result, could never win in the play-offs.

    I think in today's game he would be best used as a Tyler Herro-style spark plug. Taking 3s off the dribble is allowed by the coaching staffs more than it was in his day, so it is not something teams have to adjust for on defense and his inefficiency would be even more on display in a league where pretty much everyone can shoot (insert Ben Simmons joke here).
    Gil would score as many points as he would be allowed by his coaches. Great scorer.
    I loved watching Gil back in the day, but he was always inefficient and was a bit of a black hole when the ball came his way.
    He is one of the modern "point guards" who didn't ever play like a traditional point. He didn't run the offense, he was the offense; in his mind, everyone else on his team was just there in case he couldn't get a shot up.
    We didn't get a chance to see whether he would have become more efficient over time, but his propensity for shooting over coverage when there were other players open was a problem.
    Arenas would do well in today's shoot first game. Going back to the 90s or 80s he would have had issues; hand checks were still legal, there was a lot of contact, and coaches would not have allowed him to play the way he wanted to.

    Was an all star caliber player who was definitely a volume shooter but he could catch fire with the best of them but defensively didn’t care for that side of the ball and what I think really hurt him was he’s an avg playmaker like he fit the mold of James harden but the difference was playmaking this man at his best avg 6 assists and that is what kept him from being a true superstar now if with that 29 or 28 he gives u 8 to 9 assists I think that’s a mvp candidate player and also I don’t blame him to much on losing to lebron it’s lebron but if he would of been a better playmaker maybe that series is closer or they narrowly win

    obviously injuries killed him.... but he was definitely a threat... i always sort of compare him to wade because they basically came out at the same time and were similar size and they both were hybrid guards at either pg or sg.. also they were both explosive but most ppl felt they were not quite kobe.... but thats where the similarities ended... Wade was a great defender and a much better rebounder and a better passer... wade played some pg... arenas was mostly pg but you wont find a UA-cam video of his best passes... and i guess thats all you need to know why his teams never went anywhere... now he got hurt at 25 and at that point his best was behind him... but also that just shows he lacked the skill... if he was truly skilled at shooting and passing he could have still played great after 25... his mobility was not destroyed enough to destroy a career of someone with skill....

    Lots of guys can average 40 ppg or 100 points in a single a game. The question is can you do that an win, thats the reason most of the leagues premier scorers don't do it every night. Gil was a great player but he doesn't deserve to be in the HOF aside from bieng arguably the second best second round draft pic ever. He was however, not as great as he claimed to be. Gil is cleverly taking advantage of new age fans, the internet, and the "underrated" narrative to gaslight his career. He knows that if he trashes the previous era he can take credit for the current era of basketball which he does partially deserve credit for but that doesn't mean he should discredit the old era. Also the help excuse doesn't apply to gil as the teams that eliminated him were also franchises bieng carried by one player. He would'nt make a good coach tho regardless of what kobe said, maybe a good assistant coach or recruiter, but he only focuses on the offensive side of things and not the other things that lead to winning like hustle defense and rebounding
