  • Installation of my tower and IMax2000 antenna. Aug 2018
Tip of antenna is 53 feet up in the air with no Ground plane or no radials...Made contacts from Canada all the way down to South America and works perfectly fine..

Wow, Theo. This is an awesome installation video, Sir. You’ve got a very nice home. Those fruit trees are so nice there in Canada.

Should use solid copper for ground. And as tower is all welded you really honestly only need to ground at base if everything is bolted. But great video

Where i work, i use RG213 for just about all installs with cable lengths 100ft of less at VHF/UHF, over that we use either LDF4-50 for tower work or longer runs, and we use LMR400 for longer runs that LDF4-50 will not fit or other wise bend where i need it to go. :-)

It's my first tower set up and I'm very happy with it. From Toronto depending on conditions i kill it down to South America....

you dont want to run that copper ground cable the entire length of the tower, it is unnecessary and will cause problems. first, that ground cable is perfect for your dc ground (lightning, static discharge etc) but will not do anything for your rf ground. second, you only need to dc ground the base of your tower (4 legs) not the whole length. AND, by running such a long cable like that it will distort your radiation pattern, it will absorb rf and re radiate it as harmonics etc acting as a second antenna, and the resistance is to high on such a long ground wire run to be effective. here is what you do, ground the base of the tower all four legs to four 6ft ground rods spread an equal distance apart (about 4-6 inches in front of each tower leg will be fine), connect your copper ground cable from one tower leg to the ground rod in front of it. (keep the cable length as short as possible) then connect 1/4 wave radial wires to the ground rods as many as you can and spread them straight out like the spokes of a wheel (as much as possible) and bury them like 6 inches into the ground. this will help immensely with lightning and static dispersion if you are hit and it will also act as your groundplane thus lowering the radiation pattern of your antenna. next you need to set up a good rf ground system. do all of this and the dx contacts will blow your mind
