I used your video to successfully swap mine out today- thanks so much! I have no electrical background so I found the comments below helpful that stated: connect red camera/sensor wire to red light wire; connect two white light wires to white wire coming from house (I used an extra white wire to pigtail them because wires were so short); connect black cam/sensor wire to black house wire. Thanks for recording this video!

Worked perfect. Can’t believe I waited 2+ years to try this. Picked up a Defiant 180 Degree White Motion-Sensing Outdoor Security-Light from Home Depot this afternoon and had it working in under an hour. All functionality with the cam is perfect.

    So I’m stubborn.
When my Ring Floodlights began to flicker I came across this video but ignored it.
For my first attempt at a repair, I ordered a cheap motion detecting floodlight with enclosed LED lights because I was really hoping to retain the original appearance of the Ring Floodlight Cam.
This, of course, was a gamble on the possibility that the internal LED driver was still good. I lost the gamble. The replacement LEDs still flickered.
I broke down and followed this tutorial and my floodlight now works perfectly.
I admit that I still prefer the original appearance of the Ring Floodlight but this is a much more affordable fix than buying a full replacement - as long as you don’t waste your money, like I did, on an extra unnecessary purchase.
    Thanks for the help!

Excellent video, sir! Being one to consider future problems before they happen I started doing research before buying video floodlights for my house. As I suspected most if not all don’t have replaceable bulbs. And just because they say it’s good for 100k hours or whatever that doesn’t mean the circuit board will last anywhere near that long! Which is a bad place to be after investing ~$200 in a security camera. This is such an easy and permanent fix. Cheers!

  • @guptanator

I had the same problem, but because I pay the seven dollars a month for the cloud recording, it comes with extended warranty on all ring devices at the same address, as long as you’re paying the monthly fee. Many people don’t know this but I think it’s a great deal to have all devices covered under warranty pretty much indefinitely. I called Ring, and they tested it remotely and shipped me a replacement device within a week.

Hi Casey. I have a NEW question! One light is out on my Ring. I do not see any black dots on the LED diodes. Would a malfunctioning puck cause just one light to go out? I have printed your diagram, watched the wiring portion of your video multiple times, and made notes from all the comments listed below. So to simplify it for myself and make sure I understand the wiring before I tackle it, would you please review my notes and let me know if this is correct? Also, I always take pictures before I disconnect wires in any wiring project as I am a novice and find them useful to refer to.
Three green wires go together (1 from each light + 1 from house power).
Four white wires go together (1 from each light + 1 from camera + 1 house power).
Two black wires go together (1 from each light [one of these has a red wire crimped on it coming from the camera]).
Two DIFFERENT black wires go together (1 from camera + 1 house HOT power).
Thank you so much for your video and anticipated response (even though it has been three years!) I really look forward to getting this done.

The concept I like with the ring is all cameras need lots of light so the floodlights combined with the camera is a great idea. I like the siren option too. Casey, thank you for this great video. I was just about ready to toss my Ring fixture and pony up another $250 to Ring. I followed your instructions using the housings from the Defiant Fixture from Home Depot (Model DFI-5412-WH). Entire cost was $27.97. I put two 150W Cree PAR38 LED Flood lights ($7.97 each) in and I have a MUCH brighter lighting solution. The Ring camera, siren, motion detector, and Ring App-controlled on/off features all work perfectly. This is a great "hack" even if your Ring LEDs are working. You get better lighting, easily replaceable LED bulbs and it looks as good or better as the original Ring Floodlight cam. BTW- the wiring diagram that you so kindly added is a must. Again, a million thanks.

Just followed your video and replaced my Ring lights. All systems are go. I took apart the "Ballast" and its no wonder they fail after a year or so. They filled the thing with silicon to help make it waterproof. Well, this is also a Power Supply converting 120 AC to 24 DC. Power supplies generate HEAT! Heat is very bad for electronic components as it breaks them down quickly. There are better ways to make this thing waterproof.

I took out the ring camera and replaced with motion sensor of the flood light. Works well.
The wiring as you mentioned the camera gets a hot(live) and neutral and gives out red live from the camera relay which need to power the lights with a common neutral. I used 27w light and works well.

One thing to consider with this hack is that the switch leg wire coming off the ring motion sensor is very thin (22AWG). That means that the wire is not rated to power 2 120v lights off if it. If you’re going to do this I’d suggest you keep the bulb wattage on the lower end.

Casey I have a couple of questions. First, if you need to buy the replacement led driver from ebay for the existing lights which are fine. Which one would you suggest. I can't seem to find one there or Amazon that can fit and have the 24-36vdc output. Second question is if your original lights are good, I can just remove the driver and rewire per your sketch, because the camera already has a built-in driver as well as each individual ring led light. Lastly, if yes what is the purpose of the hockey puck led driver? Seems somehow to be redundant.

Casey, thanks for the great video share. My 1st generation flood took a crap a few weeks. I was able to isolate the flood lights and the ballast and plugged them directly into 110 VAC and they worked fine. I figured out the problem with my flood was the step down transformer that lives inside the camera housing was completely dead. Okay I noticed about week ago one the flood lights was flickering then a week later both of them got very dim. I never thought about replacing the bulbs because one of the reason I got this unit was tg hat the bulbs has a life if 10years. Well doing some research I noticed everyone was having this issue I own this unit for about 2years. I live the unit I will give it a 5 star but because of the fact the bulbs goes out within a 2 year period and you can not replace the bulbs. I paid 249.99 plus tax if I knew at the time the bulbs could not be replaced I would have went another route. I follow the directions and get my unit back and running. Now if a bulb goes out I can just replace the bulb. I think Ring is wrong for this and need to redesign the unit. I can still control the lights from our phone and snap shot still comes up. Thank you so much for this I was already looking to see if this could be done. It too about 20 minutes

Where do you get the relay from. I don't agree with using the red 22 gauge wire to carry the current to burn two bulbs. The red wire should drive a relay circuit that powers the two bulbs. In the long run this sensor circuit may be overloaded if not for a relay.

    • @ScottElblein
      @ScottElblein 7 місяців тому

Not an electrician but my assumption is that the lights that come with the Ring don't have a converter in each one, so that's why the ballast is there; but when you buy an LEB floodlight bulb they have it built-in to the bulb itself. So if you use this method to replace the Ring bulbs, using incandescent or halogen is no problem w/out the ballast, and using LED bulbs you purchase will have the ballast in them already.
If I'm wrong and someone else knows for sure, feel free to correct me.

What color wire from camera was attached to ballast, that is the wire that would be connected to the black wires from lights. you mentioned a grey wire which would likely be ground. disconnect the lights and connect the white and black from camera to house. Return power and verify if camera is online, if it is not then connect the black from house to red wire and check again. (White will always be common)

One of 2 things here. First i believe you might have ran the house power straight to the lights and not to camera motion. if that isn't the case then check the ring app for functionality toggle the light on or off from app. If it not functioning through app (not connected or what not) it is wired incorrectly. If everything is wired right then you have a bad camera/motion relay
