    If your confused, Nolan did grow to love Mark, Debbie, and humanity as a whole. Since Mark took so long to get his powers he came to think Mark was fully human and changed his plan to wait out until Mark and Debbie died of old age, then fulfill his mission. But when Mark got his powers he realized he now had to come clean because he could wait it out anymore. That’s why he seemed almost sad when Mark told him in the first episode.
    Everything Nolan said to Mark during their fight, he was saying to himself too.

    "Animation is for comedy" is a very Western mindset created by Disney's stranglehold on the industry in the 20th century. This show leans more toward the anime side where any kind of story can be told.

      It's just a serious lack of respect for the medium. These people wouldn't fair any better reading comics because when they tune into Daredevil and get a depressed man's view in his faith and the immorality of killing instead of a slapstick comedy, they'd be like "what the hell is this? That's equivalent to about 80% of one year of a normal human lifespan. So if you live to 100, think about how you'd feel about the previous 292 days.
      I think a funny thing about age that a lot of people don't grasp is that no matter how old you are, you still live life one day at a time. The speed of time doesn't change except in hindsight. As you get older you'll definitely start to feel all the years behind you, but an hour is still an hour, a day is still a day.
      Nolan may be ancient, but all of that is so far in the past, it's just a jumble of highs and lows that just help shape who he is, it's not an eidetic frame by frame (I assume).

    • @notednuance
      @notednuance 3 місяці тому +8

      @@Kineticboy2K1 Only sorta though right? You are still imagining what it'd be like to be 100. As I get older the faster last week becomes a blur with other past weeks and the moments that stand out are just the emotionally charged ones over the years. Its easier to recall emotional moments from 20 years ago than it is for me to say remember an average tuesday from last year and the faster days feel like they pass by... in my youth having to wait an hour seemed interminable... now an hour passes and I hardly notice. Its hard to imagine what that feeling would be like after 2500 years. So while I think the time dilation is more extreme in hindsight, it also started impacting my perception of the single day Im living currently and Im not yet 40.

    • @Kineticboy2K1
      @Kineticboy2K1 3 місяці тому +7

      @@notednuance I think the point I was circling was that it shouldn't matter whether you're 25 or 2500, the most important part of your life is the most recently lived bit. I'm 36, so the percentage amounts to about 105 days. If I think about the last 100 days I can recall various things I did and felt, but it's really only the last several weeks that are fresh enough to have any kind of weight for my current day life.
      There's plenty of pop culture immortals to draw inspiration from, from LotR elves, to Invincible's own The Immortal. The common thread is that while long lived, they still act moment to moment as if today is the only day they're living.
      There's this great movie called "The Man from Earth" that details the life of a "caveman" that just genetically lucked into immortality and all that comes from that. He recalls great swathes of time passing and generally what he did, leading up to modern day where he has accumulated a group of scientist and philosopher friends to reveal his secret to before he moves on to yet another lifetime before the world gets suspicious. It's a beautifully told story that delves deep into the psychology of immortality and colors much of how I feel about this subject.
      To be fair, in Omniman's case, most of his life is violent and tumultuous and so his ingrained psychology would be much different compared to a wandering immortal human or magical creature. He's lived a life of brutal tyranny and destruction, so given his turn-around in such a relatively small time-frame speaks to how much he actually deep down wanted a small and unchaotic life, if only for the tiny time his family would be alive. His soul yearns for love and happiness despite his horrible life, and in a lot of ways makes him one of the most tragic characters ever created.
      Fun to think about regardless.

      @Tyler_W 3 місяці тому +38

      More than that, he was almost upset that his son got powers precisely because he loved his family and wanted to live out the rest of their lives like they already were. What's a 50-100 year waiting period before conquering the planet in the scope of a species that lives thousands of years? Even if he capped out at 5k, a century would still be a small fraction of his entire life, and nobody back on Viltrum would notice. It explains why he didn't think he valued human life too. He doesn't hate or have any ill will toward humans. He just thinks of them as cheap and expendable no different than we think of insects (that'll be ironic later if you don't already know). He's wrong, but it makes sense. Mark gaining his powers sped up the time table before he was ready because he was hoping and expecting to outlive his family and most of his friends before he outright moved against Earth. He didn't expect to make friends and fell in love, but instead of working through his internal dilemma, he ignored it and put it off for as long as possible with a really poorly thought out plan in hopes that he wouldn't have to confront the issue until Mark unintentionally forced his hand.

      Aside from the more graphic ckntent, it's more of a return to what action cartoons used to be in the 90s and 00s (The DCAU is the prime example, even ATLA too, although it tried to toe the line between action and comedy). We just haven't seen nearly as many of them over the last decade or so with rare exception. We still got them, but the period of 2008 to about 2012 is when whatever action cartoons we got were very quickly cancelled before their time for really stupid reasons, and they largely got replaced by a bunch of cheap, lowest common denominator comedies that tried to be the next Adventure Time or Regular Show while failing to get what people actually liked about it. The only prominent action/drama cartoons of any real quality that we had from 2012 when most of the existing ones were killed of and the release of Incincible 9-10 years later was Legend of Korra (but even that didn't go unscathed), Star Wars Rebels (which also dabbled in slapstick comedy early in its run), Castlevania (which Nat should totally watch), Love, Death, & Robots, Gendy Tartokovsky's Primal (another great action series she should try), and the revivals of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Samurai Jack, and Young Justice (Star Wars: Bad Batch and Arcane came out not long after Invincible season 1 did). Seems like a lot, but relative to how many more comedy cartoons we had in that time or even action/comedies like Rick & Morty and TMNT 2012, That's not a lot. Say what you want about streaming, but it saved the action drama cartoon from near extinction.

    As someone who grew up with an abusive dad, the finale of season one hit me so hard. When Nolan says ‘What will you have after 500 years” as a bloodied defeated Mark just says “You, dad”, really took me back to childhood of how I tried so desperately to show my dad I loved him despite the terrible things he’d done. Nolan’s entire speech during the fight scene felt so incredibly real in a way no other film or show that’s about domestic violence never actually gets right. The condescending tone, the superiority complex, Nolan very much so felt like a true to life depiction of a man living a double life and taking it out on his family. With my dad, it was him cheating on my mum that triggered his violence. Clearly there’s depth to Nolan which is evident in season one and more so in season two and what little I know about the comics there’s so much more to come, but the layers he has really shows the complexity in abusive fathers/husbands and how their own self hatred is what leads to them hurting those that love them. It’s really heartbreaking watching it and having all those flashbacks as well as relating so much to Mark. I’ve seen so many things about abusers, same with my sisters and my mum and we’ve all said nothing has gotten it right, but one of my sisters and my mum watched this and we all agreed it depicts it all perfectly. Other people will have different experiences, but that sense of fear, worthlessness, but also the love you still have and the hope they’ll change, it’s all present here. For me even after my dad went to prison, despite hating him, I still saw him and sought his approval desperately. It’s like I always felt incomplete because my dad didn’t love me. It’s only now as a man I realise he probably did love me, but the hatred he has for himself and his traumas made him cruel. If I knew these comics existed when I was younger, I would’ve gotten some much needed therapy. Instead it was characters like Wolverine in the comics, animation and films that I related to.

    I agree with the surface level stuff, but I believe its intentional to show character development from the aspect of mark's monotonous human life with the contrast of the power of his dad and coming to terms with having his powers kick in late. This season is just a small tip of the iceberg and really just setting the foundation for mark and the rest of the story moving forward, showing how mark is grasping with being a normal human to becoming super and how much work he needs to do. Keep in mind, Mark is "Invincible" yet this whole season he has gotten his ass handed to him and is not only supposed to protect his planet from his own father(who is thousands of times stronger than mark) but the entire viltrum empire as well! I hope you continue the series because it is more fleshed out, better writing and animation production and a lot of passion in season 2. I kind of see season 1 as a "pilot season" and for a pilot, shows a lot of promise and so far they have been delivering in season 2!

      Amber's behavior: has one irrational argument after trying to give her pretty much dumped bf a second chance as a 17 y.o., officially breaks up with her bf after months of legitimate grievances. The entire audience: Damn how toxic, she should've thrown herself into his arms, I can't believe a teen girl in an absentee relationship wouldn't forget everything as soon as he had a _truthful_ excuse for why she never gets an actual relationship from her boyfriend.
      Like I swear everyone loves Amber until the main character feels bad, as if she didn't feel like ish for months, from date number 1. It's protagonist bias, same reason people hate Skyler White for not liking Walt killing and almost getting her family killed multiple times, promising each time it was the last, because her having her own perspective of wanting out of the danger threatens to ruin the "fun" adventures of the protagonist.
      Y'all act like Amber was gaslighting and abusing my man when the most severe action she took was not staying in a relationship she had _zero_ obligation or even incentive to be in. Was the final blow irrational? Absolutely. Was the months of absentee behavior that led to it irrational? No. Y'all accept that when Mark can't just come clean or make a clean break from Amber when he's hurting her was the result of him being an inexperienced 17 y.o. boy, but when it comes to Amber those considerations are tossed aside.

    Nothing is wrong with Nolan's brain; he was bleeding because those two satellites powerful blast, and that's it.
    Now you know why Nolan didn't help Mark when he was watching him fight and called the Guardians of the Globe. His goal is to weaken the earth; that's why he killed the first members of the team and then called the second ones so they would die too.
    I guess the Vultrimites knew when to stop because everyone that died died from one hit, so those were weak, and everyone else that survived could take multiple hits because of how durable they were, so those were strong and that's when they stopped.
    And the Guardians of the Globes couldn't do anything to Omni Man, they would've died. That's why Black Samson said, "We can't stop this fight, but we can save lives."
    32:00 Most people miss this, but yeah, he acted weird because he was waiting for Debbie and Mark to die from old age because Mark's powers haven't kicked in, so he was waiting. When Mark told him that he finally had his powers, he knew that Mark would live for thousands of years, so now he needed to begin his job of weakening the earth.

    Not sure if you noticed that Nolan cried as he was leaving Earth. *Omni-Man was telling the truth when he said his life on Earth felt like a speck of time for him.* Viltrumites live for an EXTREMELY long time. I could be remembering this wrong, but I think a clue dropped at one point when Omni-Man said "he remembered something from yesterday" and Debbie corrected him saying "that happened years ago".
    I believe episode 1 Omni-Man was hoping that both Debbie and Mark would die of old age and never find out his true mission on Earth. Once Mark got his powers, Nolan knew it meant he couldn't wait for Mark to "age out". Therefore, Nolan had to stop his little "vacation" and get back to work conquering Earth.
    The TV show screenwriters really fumbled the ball when they re-structured the Amber story line. They wound up making all the characters involved in the scenes look inorganically bad, especially Amber.
    Unlike the comic book version, TV Amber is no longer a legitimate character. She is an unbelievable inorganic caricature used solely to drive an ideological narrative. When characters interact with Amber, they too become unbelievable, inorganic, and flawed tools of poor writing.
    *SIDEBAR SPECULATION ON VILTRUMITE AGING AND WHY DEBBIE WOULD FEEL LIKE A PET:*
    To give a perspective of time for Omni-Man: When Omni-Man crushed Red Rush's head, it lasted less than a second but felt like hours to Red Rush. Omni-Man has the opposite problem. According to Comic Vine, no Viltrumite is ever stated to pass the mark of 100,000 years old. Most average around 80,000 years - give or take.
    If we can assume the "time ratio relative feeling" and the ratio of a Vitrumite living to 80,000 years to a human living to 80 years.
    80,000 yrs / 80 yrs = a factor of 1,000
    Same factor ratio by human standards - 80 years / 1,000 = 0.08 year
    Since 1 year = 365 days
    0.08 x 365 days = 29.2 days
    So assuming the time ratio relative feeling - 80 years to a Viltrumite feels approximately like 29.2 days to a human. Debbie was already an adult when Nolan met her. Her entire life would feel like a mini vacation to him. It was Debbie's short lifespan that made her feel more like a "pet" to Nolan.

      What does she feel she's entitled to? A relationship from her boyfriend? Can't feel too entitled since she broke it up when she didn't get one. If anything Invincible is the entitled one, he _knew_ Amber had essentially already broken up with him, he was _never_ there for her, then thought a final reveal made everything before that ok and she would stay with him. He wants a girlfriend without wanting the relationship, her being "annoying" is protagonist bias. Can't stand to see Mark getting chastised for missing every important date with her, even when those grievances are well founded. Hero or not, even had she known from the beginning what exactly does it change?

    The fun part is that the story covered in season 1 is basically the prologue. Nobody who hasn't read the 144 issue comic series has almost no idea where this is going. There are a few more major players to introduce at the beginning of season 2, but when the plot really hits its stride, things are gonna get super crazy. If you're still into it, there has been an Atom Eve standalone episode that came out late last summer, Season 2 ran its first half last autumn, and it's coming back to wrap up the rest of the season on a weekly schedule in the middle of March. If you intend to continue, you wouldn't be able to finish season 2 until April anyway. It's definitely intended to be an action/scifi drama, not a comedy, but it does and will continue to have some levuty here and there as characters get to know each other more. The character relationships, the way it reworks superhero tropes, and the escalating stakes are what I think are really great about this story. As much as I love Invincible, Omni-Man really is the most complex character there. I think this did a great job showing how he's wrestling over his conflicting feelings about his life-changing experiences on Earth with his family and his Viltrumite indoctrination, so a lot of what he says is tryung to convince humself as such as he's trying to convince Mark. I think you'll really appreciate how Mark grows as a character too.

    I think the reveal that Amber knew Mark's identity breaks the character, and imo is what makes her so hated.
    Up until this point she was confrontational, sure, but not without reason. I think it's perfectly understandable for someone to be pissed when their partner regularly misses important events, breaks promises, etc. She could be pretty aggressive, but not in a way that made her a bad person or anything.
    Then they did the reveal... I really think the writers just did it to have a sort of "gotcha" moment for Amber, without realizing what the consequences of that would be. Without realizing that it completely invalidates all of her anger, and makes a perfectly understandable character incomprehensible. Because now you can take any case of her being upset with Mark, and realize that it no longer makes any sense. When Mark disappeared during the fight with the cyborgs it originally made sense for her to be upset, as from her perspective her bf just hightailed it out of there, completely abandoning her amidst the chaos. But now... what's she upset about? That Mark saved the day? There's literally no angle to view it from that makes it make sense.
    Imo it's clear that they didn't write these events with the knowledge that Amber knows Mark's identity, and that the big reveal was something they added in, in the moment, to give Amber a badass gotcha, not realizing the implications of that decision. So a single writing decision, one without much foresight, single-handedly ruined an entire character,
