@@evilempireproductions879 I'll admit some of the fatalities are silly especially in UMK3 & Trilogy but they're still fun & hilarious. MK3 is darker than the previous two games, just most of the fatalities aren't. I just don't see how anyone can say MK & MK2 is darker than MK3. Even when I was a kid when this first came out kids at my school were saying how dark it was & some didn't like it because of that

@@defendpolicedefunddemokkkr6976 I mean obviously everything is a matter of opinion but when it comes to violence I find that the more realistic it is the more “dark” it is. Even the character designs in this game are more cartoonish to me. I didn’t and don’t really play these games for “darkness” to begin with. I personally loved the simple yet rich plot and the gritty realness to the violence. Once you amp it all up to ridiculous levels it’s not dark to me it’s campy and cartoonish. Sure, a post apocalyptic earth could technically be considered “darker” but again I personally have just never thought rich mythological fantasy works well in a modern real world setting. (Think Mortal Kombat defenders of the realm lol) Even the games today suffer from this IMO. Trying to blend the high fantasy elements with real world aesthetics just makes for some bizarre and campy storytelling. But hey, that’s just me.

Instantly clicked on this video and it was exactly what I was hoping for. MK3 has such an amazing mood and atmosphere, it's always stuck in my mind from playing it as a kid up to now. It's crazy how a fighting game manages to cram so much character into the levels and the soundtrack, the world is so well realised. Even though, by design, the setting is meant to feel desolate, it totally adds to the feeling of this barren, post-apocalyptic world that has been stripped of life. You feel like you really are the only people left on the planet. The crossover with real-world places was such a good idea.

The "custom Fatality" system was the WORST. It was just an excuse to have only like 5 unique true finishers (because the "custom" aspect was just a random combo of hits before the actual kill) for the entire cast of characters. They each should have had at least 1 unique Fatality.
The one thing that I did like about Armageddon was the custom character feature. That was actually pretty well done IMO, and I didn't mind being limited to the "custom Fatality" options for them since it would be difficult to include a bunch of unique ones specifically for custom characters. This is a feature that I wish they had continued with an evolved in future games.

It took the best of 90s era comics and fused it with some of the best ideas the MK series has ever had.

New MK can't even do this anymore, that's the sad part. It has violent but at the cost of a developer getting PTSD because he had to research gore videos. There's barely any humor in the games, no bad assery, and now most of the guy characters are showing off more skin than the females. I don't find that any fun at all.

a large screen there was some 6-8 feet distance between you and the screen. Around the "theatre" was the MK3 art.. it was epic.
And of course the music.. holy shit, you knew this game was different just by the music, it was so dark and mysterious and it was played loud.
The sound effects of the cyborgs, the brutal fast paced OH OH OH and the new running action really made this something so completely original and hype.
MK 1 and 2 were awesome but 3 brought with it some hype that was just so alien compared to anything I'd seen before.. I remember watching people
play it on this projector version and thinking, my god this game is weird and wild.. I'd played 1 and 2 but 3 just kinda freaked me out with how different and bombastic it was.

Such an excellent analysis - MK3 definitely felt like a huge step forward for the series, and I never really considered the details of why it was so memorable because I guess I never really revisited it after I grew up a little. GREAT VIDEO!

all the mortal kombat games from the first one up through deception all had excellent production values for the most part in my opinion. a really unique blend of eastern and western, fantasy and sci fi, and all these influences from different movies combined with a character really unique to midway games of the era. i still think mortal kombat 2 was the peak in terms of raw aesthetics. for what its worth though i actually think deadly alliance and deception were the best games in the series despite some flaws

The Motaro “roar” in question was, I believe, created for Heretic or Hexen.
It drives me nuts when kids review a game from a prior era and describe elements of it as “silly” or “flawed,” when they were nothing of the kind at the time of the game’s release.

  • @vorador884

Great video! Motaro's "voice" is a pretty famous audio-sample. The same exact sound can be heard when you kill certain creatures in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain.

Something special about playing this game on the PS1 back in the day. The transition from cartridge to CD and the audio quality was amazing back then. This felt like a true 90s sequel with the character designs especially the robots. Loved that it was set on earthrealm with the urban environments. I remember staring at the PlayStation images of this game for ages in game magazines when I was still only on the megadrive (genesis). Best soundtrack and general audio for me out of the original trilogy. The dial a combos were good too. Nowadays I find mortal kombat a bit ott and does not carry the same spirit. A HD remake or a return to HD sprites would be a dream

Oh man, awesome video, all of your talk about Motaro reminded me when i was about 4, and my brothers were HUGE mk fans, like, here, in South America, OG MK its like bread n butter, its so popular. I remember walking down the stairs at night to stare at my brothers playing UMK3 on the PS2, and i always creeped out the atmosphere of the game, and the fact you mentioned the Balcony stage, i remember one day watching a match between Cyber-smoke and Kano, and the intensity of the game itself (The sound, music and the blood) creeped me out so much that i still remember to this day.

I appreciate that you gave both the music of MK3 and composer Dan Forden so much praise and recognition in this video. And I absolutely agree with you that the newer entries in the series (MKX and 11) lack the outstanding music and atmosphere of MK3 and the original trilogy as a whole.

Motaro's voice clips sound so much like the Dragon Zord from Power Rangers. Awesome video man, it's crazy when I come back to the older games from MK 1 all the way to the 3D era pre Netherealm Studios and they have so much charm and love but in there that I think is a bit lacking with the new age.

I really like dudes that make videos like this. You appreciate small but precious things, just like me, and the fact that you spend time analysing it in such a professional way really impresses me.
To be honest, I don't really like MK1, 2 and 3 because the AI is cheap as fuck, and the combos (MK3) are actually hard to pull off. BUT, the Aesthetic did leave a mark, and I did spend a heck chunk of time kombating with my little brother and my cousin. Those are the memories.
I never played the single mode because of exactly what you say, it is dark and scary. The stages, the sounds, the music, the evil barbaric bosses. Don't wanna be alone with those, NO sir! (MK9 and possibly MKX did a great job updating the aesthetic to a more up-to-date one tho).

I think what hurt MK3 the most was the steep learning curve for the new Run/Combo play style. It was one thing in the pre-internet '90s to pick up simple codes for Special Moves and Fatalities from other players or occasionally a video game magazine, but to approach a new arcade cabinet and suddenly have to know a completely different game mechanic in order to do well made MK3 feel not very inviting. I personally grew to love the game eventually, and in hindsight the new mechanics were genius and a lot of fun once you figured it out, but I was definitely one of those players who tried it a few times, felt annoyed, and opted to just keep playing MK1 and 2, especially since they had become available on home console.

I'm awful at fighting games, but I was always a big fan of MK because of the characters, universe and unique mood. Mix of eastern themes and mythologies, occultism and futuristic sci-fi elements is one of a kind. And MK3 was always my favorite of the bunch - I just love the look of the characters

What draws me to games is good atmosphere tbh, UMK3 is definitely one of them (even though i’m not good at fighters), very apocalyptic like you said.
Definitely one of my favorite OSTs of all time. Dan Forden just released a remastered version of the soundtrack on streaming.
I love analysis of VG aesthetics, another video I enjoyed analyzing a game with dark aesthetics was the one made on FarCry 2.
