It's so funny when we all get to points in our playing and think we sound terrible. You can talk to some of the greatest players you admire and they go through the same periods in their musical journey. We are all unique and bring a different piece of something special, totally unique to ourselves. I agree, we all have something different to share in this short time we are on Earth. More than half the reason I watch your videos is to see/hear your creative expressions and technical mastery of the guitar. People like you inspire me to keep on playing and learning. Leo, wise words as always! The only person we should excel is ourselves. Each person is unique and has their weak and strong points. Nevertheless we should learn all the music skills, techniques, theory, reading, harmony and improvisation as much as possible in order to become the best artists we possibly can, but everyone has their own limits. Music is not only about comparison and competition. I totally agree with you. 😃

I couldn't agree more Leo! "Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best." I always wanted to play like Gilmore but there is only one of him - I stopped playing for a decade until I realised (with a bit of age) I liked my playing. I wont be Gilmore but I can be a happy me 🙂Sure, have goals and idols and enjoy the journey - but what you have to express is far more valuable than trying to be someone else. Love the format - thank you!

Yes, I totally agree with you...I also went through times when I would like to be Gilmoure...then Metheny...then Bettencourt....but it's better to try to be ourself....composing our own music, with our own limits and our own strengths....thank you!!

Ive seen a lot of classic clips of Rick Rubin, David Bowie, and many classic artists say to make music for yourself, and not worry if other people will like it. As long as you like it. As it just so happens, most bands/artists say their best stuff (stuff we now consider the most classic albums of all time) was created when they were just making the music they wanted to make. The second they started trying to “make music they thought people wanted to hear”, it was their worst stuff. I really resonate with that thought process because I like unique styles of music, that aren’t popular, but they’re fun to make

Great ideas and philosophy for life, Leo. We are unique.
Many are more well versed in guitar techniques, but I have a unique voice on my instrument. Many are much better at composing music, but I have a unique voice in my composing.
When we remember such truths and, instead of competing with others, we try to learn and improve daily, then we grow and become better musicians.
I don't get depressed because I don't play like this great guitarist or that one. I just try to be the best I can be and work hard to improve.

Btw, and this comes from the deepest of my respects for you, we as artists should not be using AI, as you did in the miniature. As you say there are plenty of artists, visual artists as well, with something to say. It is more expensive and not that immediate as AI but surely more rewarding. I believe that the core of music is to give expression to what is inside you. Every person is unique as you say, so every person has a unique expression of what is inside them. Technical abilities are just the tools.
I never chased trends or worked hard to learn specific techniques. I was always trying to improve my technical abilities in ways that allowed me to express myself, to get what I heard inside out on the guitar. That's where fulfillment comes.
I'm not worried that I don't know sweep arpeggios or that someone says I should hold my pick differently. I can (mostly) express what is inside and that makes me feel happy and fulfilled.
