Leslie Feinberg's cult classic of queer fiction is an examination of the search for identity in the face of intense oppression. It's written like a memoir, with many chapters being self-contained vignettes from the life of Jess, a butch lesbian moving from town to town, job to job, relationship to relationship during the 60s and 70s. The book is extremely gritty and dark at times, but also very affirming and powerful. Definitely has the most emotional scenes out of all the books I've read this year, but not for the faint of heart!
