Learning the Aria from Bach's Goldberg Variations. Bit by bit. BWV988

- This is a reposting of my first You Tube video (fall of 2008). In it, I slowly tease apart (TOO slowly for some- the first comment I got, "torture") the Aria and demonstrate a step by step method for learning and practicing this kind of ornamented music. (Thereby exposing a bit of my musical neuroses along the way!
Hey thank you so much for this instruction. It’s my goal to learn this beautiful work too. Don’t laugh but I’ve given myself 5 years to learn it. Oh I can’t play piano either. I’m teaching myself. You have already helped me with these ornaments, especially that turn on G in bar 6. I was so getting it wrong. Thanks again. Steve
Are you getting anywhere? I’m trying to learn the piano - in part to learn this.
Nice to know You're back ;)
Beutiful piece of music.
I will often saty up till 4 in the morning playing a piece on piano, pulling 10 hour shifts on it just to master a piece.
thumbs up !!!
i've always tried learning one measure at a time, and then stringing together phrases, and then entire pages and pieces... this is also helpful in learning difficult pieces by memory, and i NEVER use sheet music in performance (unless i get absolutely desperate)...
@LermyteJos As a late starter almost nothing has been "easy". But I have personally known several really great artists and I can say that they all have worked and continue to work quite hard. So take heart because a deep level of work is what is involved for most people.
@HerrWarja It sounds so simple. Then with the sheet music its easy to get caught up in dealing with multiple voices, finger substitution, and the ornaments. So easy to lose the real music with all that going on.
@HerrWarja Sarabande: Yes, because it affects the entire character of the piece. The idea is not mine. It comes from my harpsichord teacher - on UA-cam as "aTree3". Her teacher was a student of Wanda Landowska so I imagine this has been a well considered interpretation.
@HerrWarja Yes, I studied with her for a few years. I think she is a rare find.
@Phacias Thanks!
@SFChristo OMG! Is she your teacher? I love her videos! Such an interesting lady!
@bbbbmer Hi Alex. I would LOVE to be able to learn a lot more by memory. But it has been a struggle. The first performer to always give recitals from memory was Franz Liszt so I blame him. :) Are you going to post some the pieces you play?
@SFChristo Yeah I know, it took me a wile to learn this piece. Of course it is not perfect, I don't think I play it in a maner of a sarabande. Do you think that it is important to do so?
I'd work longer and harder on a piece but I find I just cannot concentrate for that long. After a while my fingers are moving but my mind is elsewhere. Learn as much as you can as young as you can while you have maximum concentration and memory.
@bbbbmer or if i'm drunk....
