    Here’s a tip. If you click on “not interested” in every short, and then refresh the page and keep doing that, shorts will stop appearing in your home page.

      also if you log in on the site (not the app) you can x out the shorts bar for 30 days at a time without having to interact with each one

    In my experience, putting limits works for a very short period of time. Then, you're back to the "junkie" behavior you described.
    What works for me is a combination of 3 things :
    - fixing some loose limits
    - being very aware of the moment when watching YT/playing video games stops being a pleasant activity and becomes an escapism from real life or a sign of an addictive behavior
    - and what matters most for me, having other pleasant activities that are not addictive and are better for my mental health : walking every day, reading, cooking from scratch, journaling, meditating, making a puzzle, going to a museum, ... If you prioritize those kind of activities, you have less time for addictive ones.

      so true!! I think I just needed to remove myself from it for a bit to gain some perspective and get back into reading. I'm already halfway done with another book and find myself craving to read more than to scroll, which is exactly the step I was hoping for!! but thank you!! this is very good advice that I'll try to keep in mind. especially the whole "being aware in the moment" thing, which can sometimes be my biggest struggle to overcome and push past.

    I sort of did this. I found that I had the same problem with reading. It came to the point where I would wake up and hard core hyper fixate on reading. I didn't do the things I should have been doing cuz I was lying on the couch (with my feet up in the air) reading and reading and reading. One day I litteraly started and finished a 250 page book IN 1 DAY!! It was insane.

    Very good thoughts, Grace! I have to say that I find myself really often scrolling through UA-cam after a long working day or on weekends. Most of the time I live alone and watching youtube is a way to „relax“ and „meet people“ without going outside. I actually know that it’s keeping me away from real social contact. It‘s a big trap for many people. I think it is a big sign how exhausted our society is nowadays, even with all of the so called progress we have. Imagine 100 years ago, people in a small village just sat outside in front of their houses in the evening and had a chat. That‘s completely gone. But I love hearing that you use UA-cam videos to learn new skills (like running a farm as you said). I also use UA-cam as a big encyclopedia to learn something. For example 98 % of the videos I watch are in English, so I can improve my skills there. (I‘m from Germany). Have a great day, Grace.

    • @gracenevitt
      @gracenevitt  Рік тому +1

      yes! I love using youtube mostly as a learning tool or as inspiration, but it definitely keeps me a bit anti-social. I totally agree that it is a trap sometimes! it can be super hard to break out of that cycle for sure.

    The instinct to waste time on youtube/instagram instead of doing reading is definitely a real struggle!! Great video Grace!

    Everything you have said is correct! I've been on and off social media and nobody cares. Hehe. They won't notice you unless they love connecting with you. I finished more books also when I stop scrolling.

  • @veronicasvideodiaries

    My limit for instagram is to only use it from my browser, the since the laptop UI isn't friendly
    For UA-cam I make myself comment on every video I watch, this makes me think twice about the content I'm consuming and forces me to reflect and engage with it as well. It also adds a barrier to automatically playing the next video.
    Before bed I recommend other hobbies like coloring, reading, puzzles, or journaling (:

    This is so relatable like everything you said is honestly most of us these days. Super helpful hearing someone saying it's a problem because us all being addicted is so normalized.

    Great job! I'm proud of you actually trying and making a change. As I have the same issue I wanted to share a tip that helped me to keep on track and actually improve on my social media usage. I never delete tha apps or anything that I'm trying to rest from anymore. I noticed that this doesn't build resilience, it's only removing the problem temporarily. Instead, I keep the distractions visible and build a plan to keep myself away from them. I either make a daily to-do list or leave the house, or start a new hobby. There's so much you can do! That doesn't mean I won't open the app from time to time... But in this way I can actually train the brain to focus on other important things rather than scrolling. It's quite hard to achieve this with ADHD brain because you constantly have to catch yourself in the moment doing something you don't want to be doing... but totally possible! Sending you a big hug. Hope I was able to make your day better.

    I've been wanting to detox from social media but it truly is hard. I get on insta mainly for this brand and certain ppl that r in this brand so I can't truly quit yt becuz I always feel like I need to be in the know w what they're doing 😂 and yt I'm obsessed w, I love watching videos lol. If it wasn't for that, getting rid of social media would be easy 😂

      that is one book that I started and haven't finished the whole program!! I did morning pages for a few weeks a few years ago but I'd really love to get back into her suggestions because I feel like it would help me a lot!! in life and for my youtube channel!
      in terms of advice, I'd say, just have all your other stuff ready to go. I had a couple of books that I was excited to read, a bunch of playlists ready, and a journal right at hand LOL after your morning pages, don't be afraid to kind of jot down other stuff in your journal that you need to get out or brainstorm or plan.

    You're very inspiring, thank you for that :). How do you deal with whatsapp? It always feels like this endless to do list of texts I have to answer... Answering questions, but also kindly answering my friends and keeping up. I wish I could delete it, but I need it for work and sending photo's aaaah

    • @gracenevitt
      @gracenevitt  Рік тому +2

      my best suggestion is to set a boundary (it can be different for work versus friends/family) and decide when you're going to allow yourself to answer texts each day. you can either communicate this boundary or not, but just know that just because we all have phones does NOT mean we need to be accessible 24/7!!

      honestly they're kinda random!! LOL the ones I watch the most are Carrie Rad (she is literally living my dream life), Jules Acree (so aesthetic + has great advice for self care + productivity), Caroline Winkler (chaotic amazing vlog-stories + interior design advice), cari can read (booktube), Cathrin Manning (used to do videos about how to grow your channel but now does vlogs mostly), and two other vloggers I like watching (bc we're all the same age and have some similar hobbies/interests) are basicallyreese, and alexis eldrege

    I love a digital detox. Instagram is my nemesis. I need to detox from it regularly but I still end up coming back. I’m on a break from it at the moment so I can enjoy the holiday season. I do notice I’m not as interested in the screens at all when I’m off instagram.
