He took some creative liberties to make the english natural, and decided on a meaning of the song....rather than being obscire. Yes the song could have been about a lost love or a dead love in japanese, but english dosn't fluidly support both, we have way less homophones in our language. wish more covers would do this.
That string-type instrument being plucked a few times during the most emotionally intense parts really is what pulls this song together. Really, masterpiece-tier song right here.
