As an American growing up in the 70’s and 80’s the only thing I knew about Russia was Communism and the Rocky movie! Your short story about grandparents and crying of hard times gone by really touched me. Thank you 🙏
as someone born in soviet union that rockie movie was such propaganda, like rocky trained how acctualy russians trained - in snow, chopping wood n shit, while drago trained how americans did - in gym with complex machines and injecting roids(russians also used roids, but you could only have any access to that if u knew the 1 of 2 trainers in all country who had access to that, while in america anyone could do it), just rlly annoying how dey kept pushing this agenda of russians creating some monsters in lab, when reallity is absolute opposite just search vids of karelin or fedor training

I tried it once, was enough.
Glad to get a Russian’s perspective. This is still my favorite Louis CK story to this time.

Sniffing glue was real popular among street kids when I was living there in 1998-1999.
Cheaper than paint I suppose? I've seen homeless men and women with paint all over their face from spraying it into a bag and huffing away.
I would love to visit Russia
In the eastern half of the USA, the first settlements, villages and small towns were at such a distance you could ride a horse there and back in a day, usually around 7 miles apart. The western half developed with towns much further apart and for awhile most settlers skipped over it to the west coast. We have a short but fun history 🐎
during the time of the collapse of the USSR, I think it was obviously very hard....but one reason it was hard was that people had become dependent upon a government that gave people everything, so they were not used to finding a solution for themselves.
the reason I say this is because my grandfather (who was born in 1907) told me about what it was like during the Great Depression in the US.
He said that there was very little money and also very little food.... so the solution in his small rural town was that all the males from about 12years old to 60 years or so would get some coffee (if available and cornmeal and shotgun shells and all the males would go out into the woods for a few weeks and hunt...... leaving the women with young children and older males (and a few males for protection) to survive on the regular food........ and the males who went hunting/camping would eat rabbits and squirrels etc.
EVERYONE had a large garden, and they canned and fermented foods so that there was something to eat during the winter and they had below ground food cellars where they would keep potatoes and carrots and their canned and fermented foods in glass jars. The community worked together and it worked out ok.
My grandfather said, "We were all poor before the Great Depression and we were all poor after the Great Depression...... it was hard but it was ok. The men who went to tall building rooftops and jumped to their deaths were all wealthy men who lost everything they had and were only worth $50,000 (which was a LOT more then than it is now), but for regular folk who had nothing, it was hard but we were ok"
Now, a couple of decades ago, I visited India and saw real poverty. People who either will or will not eat that day completely dependent upon if they make any money that day or can trade work for food. There are many places today where homes have dirt floors and no electricity or indoor plumbing.
Poverty is relevant and depends upon the context. The best situation for people is to have a society structured so that they can actually take action in their own lives to provide for themselves in some manner. Relying on the government to provide everything is a recipe for tragedy.
Agreed, and being obsessed with your own pain beyond that which motivates you to try a little harder is poisonous. Woe is me ism. Learned helplessness
Even in the "good times" in the USSR Khruschev was said to not be able to process or accept that he wasn't being fooled, upon his visit to the United States, that in an everyday local super market in America you could actually have food fully stocked on the shelves and no one was waiting in long lines to get some of it.
I've seen gypsy kids sniffing glue in Balkan too when I traveled there.
Apparently it eases hunger from what I was told

My grandpa loved onions, he would just eat onion between two slices of white bread. When I was older he told me that during the great depression there would be times where all his family could afford or obtain was a sack of onions. It finally made sense that he learned to enjoy them so much and some mornings i would indulge him and have an onion sandwich with him. We need to learn to truly appreciate what we have and stop looking outward for problems we cannot fix. Take care of those around you and not be bothered with whatever foolishness others may bring.
Wow!! My russian friends never talk bout this ever. I feel so sad as i think of them now. What they had gone thru.
We have a lot of those kids here in the Philippines, too. Some kids that live in the streets do this. They sniff shoe glue as maybe a temporary remedy for their hunger. I don't know if that's why they do it but I talked to one of them and that's what he told me. It's just sad to see.

In 1992 a group of Russians came here to see how we in 12 step recovery created our services…I was fortunate to have a young man stay with me during his visit…A couple of days after he and his group arrived…I had to go to the grocery store to pick up a cake so he went with me…I live in LA on the West Side in the Venice Beach area we went to a Ralph’s Market…When we were inside the store I notice that my young Russian friend looked troubled…then he began to cry…He told me that he had never seen such abundance…He was always told that Capitalism was a failure…It was his first experience in a fully stocked grocery store…So we walked up and down all the isles twice…the next day he took his friends there so they could see…I had no idea how tough life could be in the former USSR…This touched me deeply…
Bittersweet stories are the best ones. They are the most human and true. (Things don't need to be perfect in order to be beautiful.)
I'm from Spain, but I lived in Czech Republic for a while, I made friends from other Slavic countries (Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, Russia...) and they all showed me different aspects and told me tons of stories about their families and countries. I'd say my heart is partly Czech, but I fell in love with the whole Slavic world thanks to that; so thank you, Irina, for sharing bits and pieces of your great culture through your channel. You rock! :)

Thank you for helping to explain and bring this Louis C.K. story to life even more. You said that Russian people can be very sentimental . . . I was wondering if sometime you might talk about why Russians love ballet so much more than any other single country. I think it is connected to what you said about this national sadness, sentimentality, and love for art. I fell in love with ballet because I bought my first Swan Lake as performed by the Bolshoi in 1989. The main stage curtains still had the symbols of the Soviet Union on them, but when the audience cheered, they sounded like all repression and pain was being lifted for a moment. This will always be my favorite Swan Lake (choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich).

The story teller paints a grim picture of Russia, but I do appreciate, and enjoy the humour.
Although I am not Ukrainian, the woman who raised me was from the Ukraine, and she shared many stories with me.
We certainly have poverty here as well. Perhaps it's more of a difference or contrast in our cultures, and a lack of understanding.

Also, in Dearborn, Henry Ford built a couple of nice museums worth going to.

So, I am from Venezuela, and this is so familiar to me. The people who smell glue and get high are called huele pega. they smell the glue because it keeps them without being hungry for hours.

When I was a child ,a teen down the block was sniffing glue and the mother asked my dad for help. People also sniff markers, gasoline, paint, and other things.

Russia seems like a special place. I just watched The Queens Gambit, and the depiction of Russian people/architecture in the final episode was a mood. If it wasn’t so cold I think I’d love it there. A lot of pain but a lot of heart and artistic richness!
If you are worried about the temperature, just go in the summer. Moscow can get into the high 80s F (low 30s C) in the summer. It's only freezing in the winter.

Ant I’m residing in New Jersey and I been watching sopranos I’m on season 3 now ! True not everyone is a guido , but I’m understanding néw jersey people are confident, full of swagger and energy. They’re kind and sweet, diverse . Not afraid to tussle and get their hands dirty. New Jersey and New York are expensive, if you want to be here and be comfortable be prepared to hustle and work hard
You can't grow up in Jersey within a family of Italian-Americans like I did and not love the sopranos, so I'm a little biased. It came out when I was 8, so I had to binge watch it years after like you are now. Great show. Also, you described us Jersey people perfectly. Couldn't have said it any better myself!

After spending time in SPB and Moscow, here's a tip as a foreigner -- if someone comes up to you and offers you anything in Russia, your first response needs to be a Нет. There's pretty much nothing more you need to worry about.

To go ANYWHERE north of Poughkeepsie in NY you WILL drive through MILES of forests and mountains. I myself live between 3 cities that are about 30 miles from each other each separated by forests.... I would have it no other way
Back in the 80's and 90's in Finland it was more common for kids to sniff glues and markers for a high. I think nowadays all manner of narcotics are more common, so the "good old ways" (obviously it is a serious danger to your health) are more of a rarity.
Oh my goodness! You live in NJ! My family has lived in NJ since the mid 1700's after living on Long Island for about 100 years. Mt father's family came from England and had to get permission from the Dutch since New York was still New Amsterdam. My mother's family was Dutch. So we always wondered if my father's family got permission from my mother's.
In NJ all towns touch each other. There is no unincorporated territory between them like there is in much of the US. Also, our system of surveying land is like that in the others in the original thirteen and different from many other states.

I live in Canada. Sniffing glue, gas, and other petroleum products is more common than you might think, especially in youth and neighborhoods with traditionally low incomes.

I used to volunteer with an organization that works to help "street children" , which is something that exists in Egypt to this day. They come from broken homes or they run away from orphanages..a lot of suffering, and suffering makes you age. You can talk to a 7 years old and you feel like you are talking to a 70-year-old man, and yes, glue is the easiest way to get high when they can't get some cough syrup...😐
Russian folks are great, went to St. Petersburg ten years ago (before Putin got into power again). I had an awesome time, and my ex-wife was pissed because the girls were all looking at me, and I was, y'know, looking at them. Everyone was beautiful, girls and guys. And they loved on us as Americans, and it was great. I wish they had a better situation, and I hope that it improves soon.

Sniffing glue was a problem in a lot of countries for a long time. There was even a band in the US called The Ramones that had a song in 1976 called "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue." The glue manufacturers finally figured out that if they put horseradish in the glue that it would be almost impossible inhale the glue fumes.

The whole shoe glue thing is a problem in brazil with homeless children too. They use it to stay high cause it dampens their hunger - it cuts down the pain of starvation.

The Russia that Louis talks about in the video, I think, is a caricature of what western society has allowed us to know about Russia.

Russia at the end of the USSR was in a really really shitty state, lot of people could be rarely eat etc etc, you can find some interesting stuff about without the "american" biase. It's interesting and depressing at the same time.

There are a lot of people here without homes living in the street, I saw it even as a kid except it’s much worse now because of the automation. We used to have shoe repair people here, watch repair, furniture repair, clothing manufacturers, even a vacuum tube store where you could buy vacuum tubes. all that’s gone or I just haven’t seen any of those services. Speaking of Russia, what I see that’s sad is much of your history being sold on the internet, like a Soyuz spaceship items, kgb spy equipment, old motorcycles, military cars, lots of things that should be in your museums.
Fuck, I've seen that in three inner cities and on the rez. Life can get rough but still be funny at times. Love the work Irina!!
