I agree that Steve really seems and acts like a nice guy. Good type of friend to have when your living overseas in any country. Good luck to both of you with your future plans.
Steve came off as a cool guy with the perfect temperament for world travel. He also appreciates the expat community in Dumaguete. I've lived in southeast Asia forever you cannot underestimate the value of having an expat community that you like. That every blogger I've seen from Dumaguete seems like a kind and thoughtful person is almost a cosmic fluke. I was on my way there and the day I was flying got locked down in Iloilo . One warning about the Schwab account. It worked great for me until I changed my permanent address to Thailand then they cancelled my ATM account.
Thanks for the great video. On the money thing - i would recommend checking out "Transferwise ". They have kept my money transfered here from my single bank in the states for 4 years with zero problems. Good luck! Hurry back. 😁
Good info, and very interesting as always Paul. You may see if your bank, Verizon etc. will send both and email and a text. This is what I do with my cards etc.. so there is a backup plan if I lose one of those options to verify either way.

Kind of sounds like my trip. I went in March for three week vacation to see if I liked the Philippines. Found I didn’t like Danao City and went to Bayawan based on a video by Gio. Then I was caught by the lockdown, stayed two months in a hotel locked in, spent the next four months with a girl friend in a house, and finally got back to the US last Friday. I’m here fixing things so I can go back. My plan is to go back as soon as Duterte opens the country up to tourists. I never had a bad day in the Philippines, even locked in my room. I’m still paying rent and supporting my girl friend. Can’t wait to get back. I’m going to get a dual SIM card phone so I can use both phone numbers.

Always interesting. Another solution to the need for a US number is a service like Google Voice which allows texting and works anywhere you have wifi (no phone needed - can work from a laptop or tablet).
You can use Google Voice with the app from your phone or through the browser on a computer. It’s free to sign up and you get a local phone number. I’ve never had the number rejected by a service because it’s an Internet number, it looks like a local number. It is something you want to do before you leave your country for SE Asia and you want to make it your primary number with your financial services.
I recommend him try go thailand experience in particular pattaya city and if possible another country like Vietnam or indonesia and then he will be able to judge in itself the best for him
Chime is good also to avoid ATM fees. This is one of my favorite informative videos. I think probably because we're all the same age group. I hope to find and make new friends like you guys. 🙂 😁👌👌👍
Steve seems like a great guy. We need more easy going level headed guys who retire here. I live and vlog in La Union. And I feel the pain of getting money here also. I have a Schwab checking acct. They do charge atm fees the whole month, but, at the end of the month you get a reimbursed for them. It's great. So yeah.. essentially no atm fees. And you earn interest on your money when it is in the checking account. Also, most banks only let you get about 200 USD / 10K pesos at a time. Some kind of money laundering law that was passed. Just a ploy for Banks to be able to get more transaction fees. $250 pesos per international debit / cc transaction at the atm. But, BPI lets you withdrawl 20,000 Pesos at a time. for the same $250 peso atm fee.
Paul, Can you list the top 3 apartment complexes for finding long term accommodations in Valencia? So far I've found Marpas Apartments and Dulce Vida. Are there only these two, or are there more? I think you've done reviews on these places, but have you ever ranking them?
Signing up for a VPN Service before you leave the US is probably the most important thing you could do, I didn't realize how much I needed it until I had already lived in the Philippines for over 2 years. The VPN will mask your identity to the US so you won't have to worry about 3rd party verification on any website or bank account. It makes like a hell of a lot easier.
Good guy, very impressed that he stayed on until he knew his lady friend could get home safely. I avoid ex pats when I'm in PH, too many are obvious deadbeats, much prefer the locals.
Very informative... It's this kind of stuff that I need to know, of course much of it I was figuring out for myself. This just reconfirms that my planning is correct! Thanks so much Paul!
Thanks for having Steve on, nice guy. I laughed when he talked about liking the chaos and needing to have "your head on a swivel". Oh yeah. But it is indeed fun. I'm going to take your lead Paul and not give advice. But I shuddered in my chair a bit when Steve said he would return to get a GF to travel with him. Okay, go get em. But what I did was get a GF in each of the countries I visited and lived in: Singapore, The Philippines; Vietnam and Thailand. I'm still friends with most of them. I'll be visiting my old Filipina girl buddies whenever we can get up and go again. Hope to pass through Dumagette on the way:)
If ever I get to Demuguete I'll take Steve up on his hope to form a 4 part barbershop combo? I can sing in tune (mostly). Used to sing solo sometimes in my younger days playing double base in a Jazz group, people used to pay me. As I got older people started to paying me not to sing.

Retirement is a time for travel and exploring the world. I don't see the benefit in moving to a foreign country, and settling into the same routine that you've been doing for the past 65 years.
Great vid guys , Thanks. Do you and your readers know of any restrictions travelling from Cebu to Dumagette I intend to drive down in my car , (happy to bring anyone who needs a lift ) what are the rules on and off the ferry. Intend to stay fo a month. Also any restrictions on returns back not Cebu. Appreciate all advice . Albert
Excellent, rich info re: multiple banking sources and money accessibility as well as keeping US phone lines active! Steve appears to be an eternally cheerful guy and the big dog remains a sage.
IMO it's best to do one small cash advance on credit cards in country to make sure it actually works. I've heard people (I think Mark?) depend on cash advances but when needed the bank refused for one reason or another. Cash advances are completely up to the bank as to whether you get the cash or not.
I’ve been advised to use Google Voice (instead of international plan) and make sure all your banks have that number. It’s free, has US number, has text, and I’m very cheap🤪
@@jameslonergan5840 I live in Peru, South America and use Magic Jack but I am not able to get the text message from my bank to my Magic Jack phone number to activate the new US Bank app that came out a bit ago.
Excellent tip! You can login to it via any device, Phone, PC, Tablet, etc.
Yes Google Voice or a MagicJack phone will relay a text message to you here if you get caught in a situation where you need to see a code for banking.
Yes but he has to get that Google number in the USA before he leaves
Yes but set it up before u leave. You must be in the USA to set up
@@jameslonergan5840 I live in Peru, South America and use Magic Jack but I am not able to get the text message from my bank to my Magic Jack phone number to activate the new US Bank app that came out a bit ago. It gives me an error about not being valid. I just use the web page for now until I get back to the states for a visit.
Looks like you got a haircut. You clean up nice!! Lol
Hello Mr Paul.. Very impressed by your videos.. I am planning to reach Phil by August as my gf is in Qatar is going back to Phil in August too.. I am an Indian millionaire guy who even spends 10k Dollars a month my money will keep adding up for generations.. My gf doesn't know that.. I have projected myself as just a stable guy nothing more.. Rightly said have two phones and ur country phone should work offcourse.. I will have a post paid plan when coming to Phil so I could use the applications.. Two debit cards two credit cards so I never run out of money.. My gf has two houses so one is lying vacant one has her parents all her brothers sisters married and are rich.. @@paulinthephilippinesolddog9234 wow.. I finally figured out how to send messages back and forth this is great I am very new to any kind of messaging on UA-cam,
I will be in Butuan city Philippines summer 25th through March 17th
I'm coming to the Philippines for the first time ever I am getting married to a woman that I met on a dating app
This will be our first time being all together
At least in person
I've been paying her entire bills for her home and mine for the last year and a half
Which is why it surprised me when you said it one of your videos you're trying to budget yourself to live on $1,000
My budget is exactly $1,000 to pay for both American bills and Filipino bills all together
And I manage every single month
Lately her electric bill has been really high but other than that I'm still managing quite well
I watch a lot of your videos I would love to get together and say hi in person
Hey Paul great video, one question, for a three month visit, what would you say, on the high side, would be adequate funds to have. This would just be for the visit stage. 😊👍🏽

It will happen if you go there. His phone did not get left behind by him. His phone was stolen, it is what it is. How many times have any of us lost or left our phone somewhere? NEVER There are some of the most effective and skilled pickpockets in the entire world in the Philippines. A little child can be trained by these people.
