Thanks for specifying that Samus was *Nintendo's* first female protagonist and not the ridiculous claim that she was the first playable female in all of video games. Hardcore Gaming 101 did an article a decade ago that found Samus was actually #32 when it came to playable women in gaming.

Honestly considering how much success Skybound (the guys who made Invincible) is having with their IP based comics like Transformers, GI Joe and Universal Monsters I would love to see them partner up with Nintendo and make comic books based off Nintendo IPs including Metriod.
@@Jetter06 speaking of that, the artist who did the Metroid Prime comic adaptation was done by Pat Lee who was also the artist behind the Transformers comics from Dreamwave in the early 2000s!
Donald Mustard former Fortnite creative director gave the reason. Apparently Nintendo wanted Samus to only be usable/seen on the switch. I just hope one day we see Samus in Fortnite or some other game.
yeah that is such a dumb reason, Nintendo is so annoying with how they handle there IPs, fortnite would have been the perfect way to introduce a brand new audience to the Metroid IP
@@Jetter06 No one says that's the actual reason, though. And also, how many people would even buy the skin without knowing who she is first? Are you one of those people who claim Other M ruined her character? If yes, then why do you think adding her to Fortnite would've been good?
@@NuiYabuko not to be rude but wouldnt that logic apply to any character or skin found in that game? Not everyone knows who master cheif is, not everyone knows about Keena Reeves, not everyone knows about Thanos so why would anyone buy any of thoese skins if they didnt know a thing about them? The whole point of adding her to a game like fortnite would be to help with brand recognition along with introducing a whole new audiences to her character, maybe seeing her in the store page as a purchasable skin could be enough for a person to ask "who is this character?" And that could very well lead to them finding the metroid franchise! Also im not sure what other M has to do with this particular topic but as of now samus is associated with titles like Dread, Samus returns, and Prime 4 sooooo having her in fortnite could help promote thoese amazing titles!
If you consider Dread’s development time to be from it’s first tease to it’s final release, then this game had a longer development than *Duke Nukem Forever*
The Metroid movie needs to be live action and with Nintendo and RainfallFilms collaborating. Just look it up yourself if you don’t think it would work. But unlike how Star Wars was handled Nintendo should start the Metroid movie as an intended series from the start of Samus being found, gene spliced, trained, and eventually getting her suit from Mother Brain. Doesn’t even have to be a full two hour film either that way the production cost could be lower for each film but we would all still get the complete story as intended from jump.
The Samus & Joey manga definitely catches my attention, because having a badass hero travel with a sidekick/partner is something I love to see. And Samus having a sidekick sounds like fun to me!
with Metroid Dread (or non-Nintendo franchises such as Street of Rage 4 or Shatae Advance) we have succeeded in reviving games that were previously canceled, and unfortunately Capcom has not been able to respond to reviving "Megaman Legends 3" and "Capcim Fighting: All-star".
Thanks for keeping tabs on these projects. I'll be interested in seeing if anything more from the 90's/16-bit era can surface. I always thought it was a bit odd that Super Metroid has a strange lack of representation on the Satellaview. (Donkey Kong may not have any games designed for it but it at least had advertising for the retail SNES games. Metroid doesn't have anything until Smash Bros gets promos.) There is a part of me that thinks maybe Super Metroid may had been planned to have a modified Soundlink series (Would have a radio broadcast with voice acting/music and likely a heavily streamlined a simplified map for a four-episode, 50-minute structure), but I honestly have nothing going for that other than a strange gut feeling. If you can turn anything up for that (most likely, unusual seiyuu credits or a 90's Metroid CD arrangement that feels like it should had been in a game), I'd appreciate hearing about it.
oooooo! I didn't even think about the fact that there could be a lost SNES Metroid game through the satellaview, i need to dive more into this and see if I can find anything
A 2D Metroïd on N64 wasn't a good idea, the people would have wanted a 3D Métroïd for that console but it would have looked pretty ugly. Metroid Prime had to look gorgeous in order to compete with other first party shooters like Halo so the Gamecube had the hardware for it and of course it was a success. As you may have noticed 2D Metroïd were exclusively left for handheld/hybrid consoles since SNES till the Switch which is hybrid. At the time of N64 the Nintendo handheld console was still the Gameboy Color which was underpowered. The Gameboy Advance came out during the Gamecube generation and both Metroïd Fusion (GBA) and Metroïd Prime (Gamecube) came out on the same exact day. A
@@Thechozochampion they're not. That whole story is done and they've been pretty vocal about that when prime 3 released. Federation force even doubles down on that.
I remember hearing about the Metroid/Star Fox crossover all those years ago. Not a single person I knew liked the idea. I remember people being very concerned that if this game was released, it would be the only entry for both franchises on the Wii U. That we wouldn't get a "Proper" Metroid or Star Fox game. They also weren't wild about the proposed gameplay and story. Personally, I think Nintendo made the right call. If this game had released it could have done a lot more damage than not. It could've been a bad hit neither franchise could afford to take. I would love to see them do an actual crossover, just in the right way. I think it would work better as a Star Fox Game that featured Samus., since Metroid games typically work best as solo adventures. Having Samus playable in the style of Star Fox would work better than trying to get Fox and Co playable in Metroid.
I remember hearing the rumors as well, I wasn't really sure how they would pull off a seamless crossover so I agree that canceling it was a good choice, though it could have worked if star fox played in a more adventure style format and or if samus played in a more assault format, but trying to have both styles of gameplay at once? naw chief, that would have been super jarring to swap from SF gameplay to Metroid gameplay
I know Metroid is not on the same level of popularity as Mario or LoZ, but the narrative that Metroid is one of Nintendo's lowest franchises ig ores the reality. Metroid is one of the best selling franchises ever, I believe it's in the top 50 highest selling video game franchises, with tens of millions of games sold. That might sound surprising given the narrative, but Metroid is a money maker(with some exceptions) for Nintendo and it's just been growing in popularity over the past decade. Nintendo doesn't want to lose that momentum, which is why we still saw new Metroid titles even when they bombed (Other M, Fed Force, Samus Retuns). Personally, I loved Samus Returns, and Nintendo was very impressed with it. It also was very well reviewed. It just didn't sell well because it should have been released on Switch instead of 3DS.
I think the tactics spin-off would have been awesome honestly, especially having it taking place before Metroid 1. It would be a really really good way to express that time for her, since she had to be in a completely different environment; in a team/special forces unit. As for remakes of past games, I think updating them with the Dread engine would be spectacular. It may be far fetched, but perhaps have them as one game done in parts. I say this because i think releasing multiple games of similar play styles would cause a burnout and decreased interest. So, a magnum opus would probably work better. ... there'd have to be a reason for her to lose her abilities between them, though. The only thing I can think of is the Federation forcing her to do so as to not have a living weapon of mass destruction on the loose that they otherwise don't have control over. Perhaps each Metroid saga would have it's own atmosphere to have some variety; M1 being a quick slog through Zebes, stomping everything in sight with ease, (maybe with the ZSS part?) M2 having a horror element, SM having a more open-ended and explorative feel. Err..Other M could possibly be reworked as a 2.5D game.. maybe? Honestly that game gets a bigger bad rap than it should, it just has some awkward and poorly executed nuances. And of course Fusion, leaning heavily into the horror aspect and having a claustrophobic atmosphere, perhaps having SA-X actively hunt Samus this time.
I would be fantastic to see all the past games receive the dread treatment, Super Metroid in the dread style would probably make me a way bigger fan of that game, especially if it played the same!
@@Jetter06 I'm furiously trying to get the Beta Quest and trailer out. Will give first access to you guys on YT that have been awesome enough to show it :D
A Metroid movie would be SOOOO GOOD if executed properly!!! Maybe it was the best to cancel since early 2000s video game movies were usually pretty bad. Still got hope tho! Amazing video man I loved it and hope to see more
I actually think combining Metroid and Star Fox would have made a lot of sense. Both series were going through a rough patch, with few games releasing around that time, and the few that did get released getting poor reception. So bringing both series together, combining both fan bases with a crossover would have made sense, giving both a new chance to make a comeback. Also, both series have enough similarities in their themes, with both being sci-fi video games taking place on alien planets, that they would have meshed well. It reminds me of that Scooby-Doo and Courage the Cowardly Dog crossover. It just makes sense. Also, Nintendo passing on the opportunity to introduce Samus to millions of young gamers via one of the most popular games of all time was such a boneheaded move. How does Nintendo still not understand the concept of publicity yet? If they'd allowed Samus to be in Fortnite, they would have created a ton of interest in the Metroid series. Both Dread and Prime Remastered would have sold a LOT better. Nintendo, let Metroid succeed, god dang it!
First i tottaly agree, it would have been wild to see both the SF and Metro IPs get a full crossover and it would have done well IF it was done right, since there gamplay styles are so diffrent you would have to find a perfrct balance between the two! Also i tottaly agree, this is the same company that likes to dmca takedown fan games that do nothing but give free promotion and show love to a particular IP because they somehow feel threatened by that, they're also the same people that constantly want to destroy video game preservation along with emulation even though 90% of their library is impossible to get nowadays without paying an exuberant price to scalpers or second-hand markets but yeah that's just Nintendo for you
@@Jetter06Thanks! Your video was also very entertaining and informative. I’m glad that us Metroid fans are eating better than we have been for a while. More Metroid content is always exciting, and the video surprised me with just the sheer number of Metroid-related projects that could have been.
I do know something that you didn't add to your list these were rumors but It was rumored that Retro Studios was Remastering the entire Metroid Prime Trilogy But they were in so much of a hurry they had to scrap Prime 2 and 3 Remaster and just Remaster the first Prime Game.
Yeah, to this day there’s still those holding hope that Nintendo shadow drops the MP2+3 remasters before MP4 releases. It would make sense to allow people to play through the whole story, but who knows if they actually NEED people to at this point. They may be able to just let it be with MP1Remaster followed directly by MP4 (depending on what they do with the story). It’s me… I’m one of those people holding hope they shadow drop them. I haven’t played MPTrilogy since the Wii days and would love a chance to play through MP2/3 one more time before MP4.
That's partially true. There were rumors about a remaster of the Prime Trilogy way back before Prime Remastered ever released. It was leaked from a former developer at Retro, who claimed that all three Prime games have already been remastered (and have been done for a while), but that Nintendo is just sitting on them, for some reason. He also stated that only the first Prime would be receiving the 'big-boy' remake treatment, with brand-new 'current-gen' graphics, whilst Prime 2 and Prime 3 would simply be the same as the originals but now in HD. Some time later, Nintendo announces and releases Prime Remastered in a random Direct. And it just so happens that the game has totally revamped graphics - bust like the former Retro guy stated before, leading credence to the idea that if Prime 2 and Prime 3 are ever re-released on Switch, that they will **not** be getting the same graphics revamp. But some people seem to disagree and are expecting Nintendo to go all the way again with Prime 2 and 3. And it's honestly probably just wishful thinking. We should consider ourselves lucky Retro t9ok time out of their day to re,aster the first game (and that Nintendo actually bothered to release it - years later). IMO, there's only two options we could have when it comes to Prime 2 and 3: either they do eventually release, but are just the same old GameCube graphics in higher resolution, or, they will simply never be released.
I can’t imagine how different this series would’ve been if even some of these games made it to the light of day. Seriously, it would’ve made the few releases of the 2010’s more bearable. I didn’t know some of these entries and the video was very well edited
Ikr!?!? It would have been bonkers to have gotten games like metroid tactics or prime 1.5, its sad a lot of these got canceled, also thank you so much for the compliment!!
There is a lot of merit to the rumored leak that came out in Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine during the run-up to the release of Jet Force Gemini on the N64 which claimed that the project started as Metroid 64. If you look at the intro, the ship, the insect enemies, and the corridors with similar doors as Metroid, you can see how it makes perfect sense. The game's lead designer at Rare said years later, that the game was at least heavily inspired by the Metroid series.
@@Jetter06 I watched this video and was quite impressed at what a great researcher you are because I thought that I knew my stuff pretty well but you blew me out of the water here. I am looking forward to what you find. The Quarterman rumors and gossip section in EGM is what I was referring to and the Rare Revealed series of shorts that came out around the time that Rare Replay came out is when Jet Force Gemini's Lead Designer Martin Wakeley talked about the Metroid influence although it may be actual Metroid DNA that is in the game. I keep trying to find someone who was involved in the game to ask about that but it has proven to be difficult.
The only thing extra to note about the Ultimate Alliance crossover was that Activision showed off the cameo characters running on the PS2 build to Nintendo.
46:00 apparently nintendo refused because they wanted samus to be a skin avaible in shop, meanwhile epic games wanted it to be an exclusive skin for switch or smth like that, maybe with switch 2 who knows

I honestly didn't expect Metroid Prime 4 to ever be a thing, with how bad other M did the franchise and with such the low numbers I always assumed Nintendo was gonna leave this IP to rot, I'm so glad i was wrong!
A lot of us actually didn't expect it. Development had already confirmed restarted once, and we'd been 4 years since that with no news of any kind. I remember a whole lot of people eventually assuming it was dead
Imo, they can give other m another chance if they go from scratch and actually put good writing into it I feel like the original had good intentions and they tried with it but it didn't work for said reasons above. Other than that, gameplay is fun and some lores on it (like ridley life cycle) are pretty interesting. So if they want to remake the game, they have to be super extra careful to not do the same mistake again
Yeah Other M had solid ideas and was a solid transition for 2D super metroid controls into a 3D space but between the horrible writing, lack luster ending, a few terrible gameplay choices, and the shamless reuse of Metorid Fusion and Super Metorid concepts and setups it really makes other M the worst out of the lot, a total rewrite of the story would be amazing and make other M actually get the to shine!
@@NuiYabuko first off, thank your for your comment! Second off, that was a pretty broad statment from me so let me be exact with my words, there is nothing wrong with continuing or reusing story points and gameplay elements from previous games, but the fact that almost the entire story setup, certain gameplay elements, and locals are just striaght copy cats from fusion but worse is where i draw an issue with. The bottle ship is just the BSL station , the diffrent sectors used to replicate enviorments from past plants samus has gone to is exactly what is done on the BSL station, the secret metroid experiments thats the federation is trying to hide is again what was done on the BSL station, a clone of ridly created using DNA from the OG ridly that the federation has access to some how is ALSO found on the BSL station, adam is here just like in fusion but now he sucks, the bloody nightmare fight from fusion is just here for some reason on the bottle ship, the entire game is just a retread of fusion, if ya got rid of the crappy "deleater" plot point and throw in the SA-X along with x parasites and throw in the writing and story from fusion and you could legitimately call Other M a 3D remake of Fusion. Now im not trying to hate on anything you might like but for me personally, if most of your game is reusing elments, locals, bosses, and setups from past games then you never had a solid game to begin with in terms of a story and your relying on past titles and what they established to pull your creatively bankrupt title all the way thorough (heck the game never had a proper final boss, just a secrete final boss aka phantoon from super metroid who is just here for some reason) Now thats not to say gameplay wise its not good, other M is a very snappy game and very fun ( Most of the time ) but story and near total copy of fusion is one of its biggest flaws, everything other M tries to do, fusion does better. But anywho thats just how i see things so thank you for reading my unsolicited ted talk lmao

I heard they turned down Fortnite because epic wouldn’t make it switch only like they did with the Nintendo rocket league cars where to switch players it would be Samus but to Xbox pc PlayStation and mobile it would be a default skin
That's so ridiculous, it would have acted as just free publicity for the Metroid IP and showcase it to a whole brand new audience, every other company was willing to share their IP so I don't see why Nintendo has to act like an exception esspecially with the metorid IP
Xcom type game came with mario, i always wondered why they didn't use an ip like metroid or starfox or a new one focussed on tactical coverture turn based game. Metroid made a lot of sense, using the expansive universe and fit so well with it

Unfortunately I don't have much faith that Metroid Prime 4 will sell too much better then Dread, regardless of how much a flawless masterpeace it turns out to be, it'll be a miracle if it sells as much as Kirby and the Forgotten Land let alone Breath of the Wild level sales. I think Metroids doomed to remain a niche franchise.
Thats a very real possibility but I honstly hope that isnt the case for prime 4, this is a series that has inspired so many other titles and it even has a genre named after it, there is value in this franchise and I hope that Prime 4 will be the game to showcase that!
I dont hear that take very often but i do agree it would be fantastic if we got another 3rd person metroid title, its a perfect translation for 2D Metroid Style gameplay to a 3D environment, but sadly with other M being the first and only game in that particular format it's very unlikely another game will be made in that particular style due to Other Ms reputation.

Sadly this is all post editing trickery done by me, I've always hated the way super Metroid had its UI laid out with that black bar and when I wanted to have footage of it I decided to chroma key the UI and overlay it onto the gameplay so it was more to my liking, I would love for this to be modded into the game though

Metroid is so amazing
Agreed
Honestly considering how much success Skybound (the guys who made Invincible) is having with their IP based comics like Transformers, GI Joe and Universal Monsters I would love to see them partner up with Nintendo and make comic books based off Nintendo IPs including Metriod.
That would be so cool! Metorid tottaly deserves a comic line along with Nintendos other IPs!
That's actually wild to think about!
Doesn’t even have to be a full two hour film either that way the production cost could be lower for each film but we would all still get the complete story as intended from jump.
they should make a samus arm cannon nerf gun for prime 4
FOR REAL!!! I need that in my life so bad
Other m was a sales dissapointment more than a failure
Secondly the project dread scan in metroid prime was just a coincidence
The Samus & Joey manga definitely catches my attention, because having a badass hero travel with a sidekick/partner is something I love to see.

with Metroid Dread (or non-Nintendo franchises such as Street of Rage 4 or Shatae Advance) we have succeeded in reviving games that were previously canceled, and unfortunately Capcom has not been able to respond to reviving "Megaman Legends 3" and "Capcim Fighting: All-star".
Metroid doesn't have anything until Smash Bros gets promos.)
There is a part of me that thinks maybe Super Metroid may had been planned to have a modified Soundlink series (Would have a radio broadcast with voice acting/music and likely a heavily streamlined a simplified map for a four-episode, 50-minute structure), but I honestly have nothing going for that other than a strange gut feeling.
@@Jetter06 Let me know if you find anything, even if it's something mundane like a Famitsu Kararaban or Game Toranooana with Metroid press content.

Its nice to finnaly see a video about this topic

Thank you for being here!! I hope you enjoyed it!!
Also i tottaly agree, this is the same company that likes to dmca takedown fan games that do nothing but give free promotion and show love to a particular IP because they somehow feel threatened by that, they're also the same people that constantly want to destroy video game preservation along with emulation even though 90% of their library is impossible to get nowadays without paying an exuberant price to scalpers or second-hand markets but yeah that's just Nintendo for you
I love Metroid, and with Prime 4’s announcement, I’m picking up Dread and Prime 1 Remastered.

Wait really?? Thats news to me, i gotta look into that!
@Jetter06 they were just rumors so please take them with a grain of salt.
@@theterribleclaw4285 i gotcha! Thank you for letting me know!
Thats super cool!! Ive heard alot about JFG and its similarities to metroid, i really need to check out some time for myself!
Thank God, so most of the Metroïd games are high quality games.
That is such a dumb reason on Nintendo's behalf, it would have been free publicity and introduced a massive audience to the Metroid franchise, Nintendo is practically sabotaging the IP with that decision.
@@Jetter06 yeah but i think they dont even care that much, its like they were letting metroid die slowly on purpose i mean look at all these titles you mentionned, as amazing as they are they didnt even released, im pretty sure thats because nintendo would have way less time to give to mario projects (which we absolutely dont have already enough of), i quite wish samus was sold to someone more creative than them.
@@joskiller3163 i can understand that, im deafinity sick of all the love mario, zelda, Splatoon and other ips get, its so annoying. What hurts the most is that there are tons of devs that are wanting to work with the metroid IP but god forbid, nintendo just loves sitting on there IP and do nothing with it (hopefully prime 4 is a shift in that minesetl)
@@Jetter06 yeah i hope to, whats amazingly pissing everyone off is they dont even people work on fangames freely, i dont even know how am2r survived, but take a look at Metroid prime 2d, as amazing as it was it is now cancelled, so we cant even cope on the lack of official metroids, also what genuinely pisses me is that they made a whole movie, series, about a guy, that literally jumps on mushrooms to save a princess from a turtle (literally same goal since first mario game) but they cant make a movie about a girl with a badass armor in space, having THE WHOLE UNIVERSE HAS A PLAYGROUND WITH INFINITE POSSIBILITIES OF SCENARIOS, but no no Mario made it but not metroid.
@@Jetter06 Metroid fans are really perpetual victims. Just sitting on their IP? Are you even hearing yourself? If this was any other company they would've shelved Metroid ages ago, yet here you are lying about a franchise you get games for every other year.
Metroid is getting enough love for a franchise where 3 million copies sold is a huge success.
Nobody though that there wouldn't be a Metroïd Prime 4.
I really hope they revive metroid 1.5 it sounds terrifying and I love the concepts behind it!!
It would be so cool if Prime 1.5 did somehow come back!
Imo, they can give other m another chance if they go from scratch and actually put good writing into it
I feel like the original had good intentions and they tried with it but it didn't work for said reasons above.
@@Jetter06 Shameless reuse of concepts from games that it's in the middle of? LOL
Now im not trying to hate on anything you might like but for me personally, if most of your game is reusing elments, locals, bosses, and setups from past games then you never had a solid game to begin with in terms of a story and your relying on past titles and what they established to pull your creatively bankrupt title all the way thorough (heck the game never had a proper final boss, just a secrete final boss aka phantoon from super metroid who is just here for some reason)
Now thats not to say gameplay wise its not good, other M is a very snappy game and very fun ( Most of the time ) but story and near total copy of fusion is one of its biggest flaws, everything other M tries to do, fusion does better.

Also that is a very good point, though federation force deafinity gets way more hate than it deserves, sadly that was a simple matter of wrong place wrong time, if federation force released nowadays on the switch i feel like it would have been received far better rather than being released smack dab in the middle of a metroid drought lmao

Id rather see a 3rd person metroid than the 1st person prime games...
