Fun fact, before becoming Doom's composer, Bobby Prince was certified as a lawyer in 1980, so when Id Software wanted him to compose a whole bunch of metal soundtracks for the game, he emulated a bunch of songs from Metallica, Pantera, Alice in Chains, AC/DC, and Slayer, and changed them just enough so Id couldn't be sued for copyright infringement. So Master of Puppets being played on an 8 string is like Doom and Metallica coming full circle.
Funny enough. KoRn's Here to Stay sounds so similar to the original since it was already played in A and had some crushing tone. RATM's Bulls on Parade also doesn't sound too different from the original since the bass was so distorted in the original song, now it just sounds like you're jamming the bass part lol
Somehow Walk in its original tuning sounds heavier to me. Bulls on Parade sounds exactly the same lol. Slowing down Painkiller really takes the firepower out of the song. Meshuggah should do a Nickelback cover album. All in all a really cool vid.
"One" was absolutely skullcrushing. Should be a part of an original thall song with brutal vocals. Slap some pitch shift on it to make it +15.7% nastier.
@@walterheisenberg1013 yeah, that's the point of the video. Taking songs, tuning lower than my self esteem, and finding the THALL in them. One is absolutely among my top50 songs of all time, but I wouldn't have liked this version if Pete just played it lower and called it a day. This is how it's done imho.
@@walterheisenberg1013 what would the point of the video even be if it was just the original songs in a different tuning? wouldn't sound good at all without the appropriate style

I love how you can take classic riffs and change them up so they are different but you can still tell what they are. Like you x riff in x 20 bands stuff. youre a beast.
New strings are pretty integral for any kind of cut in a mix as with bass. You can’t really get way with a month old set as you can 6 string for most tones.
Reduce bass notes as much as possible, mid either at 0-10, or at 70-88, with no in between, cut at 80 and 8000hz, and Tube Screamer pedal with 50 tone 0 drive - I usually dont preach about pedals for rhythm, but here it would be real neccesary, just like the other steps. Taken from Keyan Houshmand's tone tutorial and my personal experience with baritone guitar. PS: And turn up gain to around 60-70, maybe even 80, because at low notes (Especially E1 and lower) gain reduction is actually insane
The guitar tone was solid but for all the riffs (except Korn's Here to Stay - which was already pretty low, Untouchables was one of the better produced low tuned recordings, along with Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve and Crowbar's Oddfellows Rest) but I couldn't help but feel like I was listening to The Violent Sleep of Reason. They sounded great, but they were just in a different sonic space.
Can't say I find any of these better on an 8-string, but not worse, either. The sound is so strikingly different that they kinda defy comparison. Atill some amazing stuff!
If it sounds better for some reason it could be because of the djenty style plus different drums (someones personal preference). If this will be played the same way as the original I think it would be actually worst.
I very much recommend this one, not just cos it’s the sponsor (haha) but because I really love it. For sure the first Schecter I’ve really liked. I expect the 6 and 7 are great too :)
It would be interesting, classic riffs with an 8 string guitar but its in the same key, and the 7 and 8 string work more like a reinforce in some parts, and not just the song down tunned
Short answer, no. Love a low tuning but it'd be like trying to play maiden at this pitch, itd sound like a dying tape at full pace. When it even makes Korn sound wrong you know its too much. Great demo though sir.
Good on you for also tweaking the arrangements to fit the new tunings. I honestly love the Metallica one. I would love to hear a full version of that.😂
If done with consideration to the tuning and fineness like you did a case could absolutely be made, if the riffs are played exactly as they are played in the tuning they were wrote in the answer is almost always no.
5:22 Periphery did cover One but I'm 100% sure the tuning is just half a step lower than the original (they very likely used their Drop G#-tuned 7-strings but they didn't use the 7th string for the cover). Pete's take on it sounds very Thall/Vildhjarta-inspired.
Now, I love 8-strings but not every riff works on them, and not necessarily on bottom F#. Some worked better especially those that were contrasted by that Meshuggah-style high-string siren riff, which contrasted the djenting nicely.
An 8 string is on my list, but I can't really decide which one. Solar would be cool because of the evertune, which really helps with low tunings, but I think I would use the guitar too little to justify the price. So I looked into cheaper alternatives and since I recently got a cheap Les Paul style guitar from Cort, which is great after a good setup, I kinda think this is what I should go for. They have 8 strings as well and really affordable. And let's be honest, with the indonesian made stuff, you basically get a Cort or Samick anyway, becaue these are the 2 companies that build almost everything there for every big brand.
I obviously recommend this one however, the Harley Benton Multiscale-8 I played recently was decent (but had a chunky neck). Another good option is Ibanez but avoid any with Ibanez own brand pickups. Thanks for watching! :)
Thiq was dope af! Just sad that these kinda videos need to feature only mad famous bands and songs for watchtime and going viral, I feel like there's a lot of slightly not as famous riffs that would've worked way better imo. Also a little sad that there wasn't any Black Sabbath in there, it was the most obvious one for me haha. I hope there's gonna be more episodes of this!
With options like drop G or open tunings applied to 7 strings i honestly dont understand the point to play a 8 or 9 strings guitar, scales and chord patterns are lot easier with fewer strings and shorter scale length.
Korn was playing modern prog metal 20 years ago, tuning them down even further kinda defeats the purpose lol. Also, what makes the guitars sound so crunchy for Korn is the bass but if the lead is already below the point where you can distinguish notes the bass can't help and it sounds empty. Just like Bulls on parade and Walk and Master of Puppets. The only One (hah, get it?) that sounded okay was One. What makes all those riffs from ye olden times is the melody and tuning down to the point where it's just rumbly noise loses that part.
The few old-school metal riffs in this selection sound unrecognizable and lost basically all of their appeal and identity, at least to my ears. "PainKiller" and "Master of Puppets" especially, although "One" doesn't suffer as much. The riffs that were already groove metal to begin with, or close to that, sound really close to the originals, be it Pantera, RATM or Korn. Not sure what NickelBack even did on this list, and I'm not familiar with this particular rock riff of theirs, but since it was played quite high in standard tuning, this treatment simply makes it sound like a lower riff but still within what's available in standard tuning. All in all, fun experiment to make and it was interesting to check, but the answer seems to be a resounding nope as far as I'm concerned.
