I think I sped that compilation of drops up about 7X. I enjoy watching it in real time too, but wanted to show the progression of working around a small fire.

What kind of plane do you fly? And what is that a hatch on the front? Great piloting!

      AT-802 Fire Boss

It’s a FireBoss amphibious water scooper. An Air Tractor 802 on modified Wipaire 10,000 floats with a 1600 hp Pratt & Whitney PT6-67F turboprop. We can pick up 800 gallons of water in about 15 seconds and cruise at about 140 knots.

The hatch on the front is a spring loaded door that blows open when the hopper/tank overfills and allows water to exit the top of the tank … at about 3200 gallons per minute

Slightly off topic question. It doesn't look as if the vegetation is particularly dry. How do these tundra fires get started?

They're usually started by lightning strikes. At the beginning of the video is footage of two very small fires - one just a few square feet and another that's a few hundred square feet in size - both of those were lightning-caused fires that occurred after we arrived to fight the two nearby larger fires that were threatening cabins on the Noatak River.

Do you have a bird dog telling you what to do or do you guys just go scoop and drop unsupervised?

We typically have an Air Attack coordinating operations between us and the ground, but we’re all initial attack qualified and can work with the incident commander on the ground directly. If we’re the first to the fire we can size it up and employ the tactics we think are most suited to conditions
