Carlito's Way and Sonny from A Bronx Tale should be on this list. Also, Alonzo from Training Day was not just a dirty cop he was a gangster as he manipulated everyone around him with his law authority he should be on this list too.
Cody Jarrett in White Heat, played by the great James Cagney, should be on this list, in my opinion. "Made It Ma! Top Of The World!" It's a classic and amazing performance.
I love Al Pacino's Tony Montana. I know he is a despicable, violent sociopath, but he is such a cool fearless gangster who doesn't break his balls or his word for anyone. At least, that is what he says.
From Lucky Number Sleven I would add Morgan Freeman as The Man and Ben Kinsley as the Rabbi. They play intimidating crime bosses who were allied at one point, but now the only thing they want to do is kill the other.
Miklo Velka Blood In Blood Out (1993) He's The half White half Mexican legend from East Los Angeles played by Ken Masters himself Damian Chapa and costars Benjamin Bratt and Jesse Borrego also deliver as Paco Aguilar and Cruzito Candelaria In one of Disney's most neglected films still one their best thank the lord It's on Hulu now love this Latino Centric film
Missing Sonny from A Bronx Tale for me. Layered character and fascinating to watch him play against Robert Dinero as a moral compass for the main character. And shout out to Joe Pesci from Goodfellas. Just unhinged.
I think Sonny was based on a real gangster. chazz palminteri wrote the play that become the film - if I dont rember wrong? have said that it was based on his youth.
What about classic movies? Jimmy Cagney's characters in White Heat, The Public Enemy or Angels with Dirty Faces? Edward G, Robinson in Little Caesar? Richard Attenborough in Brighton Rock, Movies didn't begin in 1970. And what about British films such as The Long Good Friday, Get Carter or Layer Cake.
The Godfather indeed stands as a timeless masterpiece in the gangster genre, setting the standard for storytelling, character depth, and cinematic excellence.
