Thanks for this video, Donal! Been learning to play for about a year now, and am getting a bit picky about not hearing what my drums actually sound like with hearing protection (Eargasm high fidelity earplugs), which I always wear. I just can't hear the attack the way it sounds without the plugs. The answer I got from two buddies who are very talented and experienced drummers is that they use their in ear monitors as hearing protection. So, off I go on a research trip to learn about in ears, interfaces, and microphones. That led me to this video and I'm sold on using a pair of SM57's for now. I grabbed a 4 input interface so I can add a couple more mics later if I want. I'm not that focused on recording.....yet... and this setup is probably overkill for a solution to my nit picky issue, but I'm having fun. You showed me I can get started down this road for not a ton of money, so thank you very much and keep banging away!

It’s astounding how good just 2 inexpensive mics can sound. It kinda makes wildly expensive setups blush in embarrassment, eh? The mix sounds as good as you could ask for I think, anything else is frosting. (Really dug the songwriter and funk setups in particular)

Thanks so much Dan 😁 Was really happy with how those came out myself. The more natural styles translate so easily with minimal mic set ups. The Rock stuff is a lot more challenging.

lol the rock and punk setups did NOT sound good… you get some drums or cymbals lost very much in the mix

yeah, thats the thing - for me there is a lot of snare sound, i would like to to turn it lower but i cant, cause there only 1 mic :D But great video! Im experimenting myself too, but cause of lack of microfphones :D

Great! imho, The Kick sounds way better with the mic inside with the patch hole... BUT!!! listening to live drums without mic, it sounds way better without the hole in the patch. . . .weird.

I am trying to find the best way to mic all my drumset (3 toms, 2 floor toms one each side, percs at the left above the floor tom, lots of cymbals..... today only with 8 channels.... so no mic for every drum.... man!! there is A LOT of possibilities here>
1 kick, 1 snare up and 1 snare down, 2 overheads, the other 3 WHEEEERE?? maybe the floor toms because they just rumble if not, and the toms and percs being more high pitched can cut trhough the mix....
I might jump to MADI so I will have more channels for the Drums.... but, that is a never ending story.

Thank you, yeah mainly bringing out some top and low end and taking out some mids and then adding some reverb. Very basic stuff.

@@DonalBowens thanks man , I just watched your mixing video with the two mics and that helped too. I just got a sm57 and borrowed a focus right Condenser mic from a friend lol . Working on a budget of literally >150$. Thank you man your the only one I’ve seen with comprehensive videos on this topic.
