Doug brought a relatable quality to every part he played. Whether it's on The Virginian as Trampas, Bowen Tyler in The Land That Time Forgot and The People That Time Forgot, his guest roles on Murder She Wrote, or his lone role in the 1990 Zorro series (a particular favorite of mine to this day), Doug McClure drew you into a place where good prevailed over evil. We need more Doug McClures in the world, especially in this uncertain day and age. And God bless Jerry for delivering another quality documentary.
Your documentary on Doug and many others was incredible. Everyone in this segment concerning Doug was well thought out and explained with passion and appreciation.
Jerry, another fabulous biography, you never fail to knock it out of the park! Doug was a friend of my family. My mother gave a big party consisting of the Hollywood set every month at our Tarzana ranchito in the early '60s, and Doug attended many of them. As a young teenage girl at the time, I thought he was the cat's meow! Looking forward to your next production! Cheers from the west coast ~Dany
Around 1974 my husband was an Air Traffic Controller at Napa Tower in Napa, California. Mr. McClure often flew his private jet into Napa, and would usually stumble off the plane very drunk. On occasion, he would attempt to fly out of Napa when he was drunk but the controllers would call FAA and have him grounded until he was sober. When he wasn't drunk, my husband said he was one of the nicest people he'd ever met.
I fell ing love with a Mayberry.❤️ her folks were from Cape, Gerardo, Missouri. Her father Carl and mother Virginia. They moved north of Muskegon Michigan. I met her just after I was discharged from the Navy in fall of 1966. We now live in Tennessee, close to Cumberland Gap.
I loved Doug McClure in all of his shows on TV. I grew up watching him. I’m 72 now. You did a fine and kind story of his life. You are a true Southern Gentleman!
They had a beautiful friendship between them on and off-screen and the respect they had for each other was very obvious. Such a friendship is special and rare. Their relationship is part of what made the series so special.
Thank you for this beautiful documentary. I loved watching the reruns of The Virginian on TV as a kid in the 90s, as well as many of his movies. Doug was a great actor with a lot of charisma. Greetings from Germany!
A wonderful tribute to a great American actor, Mr Skinner. You always do them proud. I especially appreciated the special surprise you brought us, of the lives of the rest of the crew members on, The Virginian. Thank you, Jerry, for another wonderful episode, taking us back to the good ol' days. Hope you are doing well, Sir.
He died so y young. and married a lot !! He had such. beautiful smile and was such a happy guy. Thank you for this very thorough and enjoyable video. I watch him on The Virginian in reruns every day and enjoy the show. . He was a great guy. So cheerful and a happy attitude.
A truly great video thanks for sharing it. To this day The Virginian is still one of my favorite shows. I watch the reruns from time to time. I like all of the stars in this show. Thumbs up to your video. Stay well & safe everyone.
Thanks Jerry, for this being another brilliant documentary of a great western actor. He was a man that would do what James Drury said, "when you see him he'd make you smile". You've done him proud with yet another great video about the life of a great actor. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Clu Gulager called him Doug manure lol He was great as Trampus and always seemed like a really down to earth guy Thanks for the video, it was another great one
Loved your selection Jerry. I think I saw ALL of the segments of The Virginian. Doug was an excellent actor with charisma. Seeing all other actors and reminisce is pure delight. Thank you Jerry.
Love this channel! Thank you for the back stories. In 1986 you could still meet someone at their gate in the airport. My best friend and I were in Dallas TX at DFW and went to meet his aunt to visit and walk with her to her connecting flight. Though not on her flight Doug was there in the walkway by her connection. She was the first of the three of us to recognize him. She approached and he seem thrilled to have a picture taken with her. And be chatting with the few people standing around. And must add he looked great.
Doug was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers in Oklahoma City on April 12th 2014, I was there as I was one of those who campaigned for it.
Mr. Skinner...I cannot begin to tell you just how much your Narrative Stories pick us fans up and especially on a "Moan-Day"😄! I have mentioned before that your Postings are like you actually walking into our homes and sitting down with us all and having a cup of coffee...You Are Family Sir! The amount of work you do in preparing these audio Bio's does not go un-noticed by your Fans either. The pictures, movie and commercial videos, articles and such are an added treat as well. Thank you for sharing your time and energy in entertaining The Fans Of The Skinner Posse Who Ride Proudly With You! You make a difference and are appreciated! Cheers From Ohio
Yes, a GREAT guy (not). I never knew that he had two divorces by the time he was 28, seemingly because of his bad treatment of his wives. This has shattered my memories of him.🙋🇬🇧😩
Thanks again Jerry, this was Awesome as usual. Over the top Documentary. Always liked Doug and saw almost everyone of his movies including the Shenandoah with Jim Stewart. Incredible work my friend, please keep em coming. Augie and Jill Blase. Winter Springs, Florida. 32708
Doug served for four years in the Naval Reserve, prior to his acting career, good experience for his early roles in Men Of Annapolis and The Enemy Below and later in Nobody's Perfect.
D.M. was definitely the " boy next store" with his good looks ,and talent it is unfortunate that many of his marriages did not workout. But The Virginian 90 minutes was well written, acted, produced, directed, and all the people behind the cameras that made it successful. He died at 59.
This video is very good I really like that you show little clips from his career , ps Jerry we had 9 inches of snow in montana this weekend. Ain't you glad you don't drive a truck up here now ?? THANK you Frank from montana...........
The first season DVD's of "The VIrginian" has some good interviews with Roberta Shore, Gary Clarke, and James Drury (that's the metal-box set that first came out years ago). Interesting that Lee J Cobb didn't like working on the show. In Season 5 there is an episode with the plot of "The Black Stallion" where Trampas enters a horse race. Sara Lane and Charles BIckford are in that one. Sara Lane got the part of Elizabeth after taking a few acting lessons, and mostly left her acting behind after the show ended. Roberta Shore said her husband took her away from Hollywood when she got married, and for a while it was hard not having people pay attention to her like when she was in Hollywood. But she never missed being in show business and was most proud of raising a family.
Nice doc on Doug McClure and the others. I had not known that the opening battle scene in: Shenandoah, had been used twice before. I think parts of it were also used in the opening battle scene for: Undefeated as well as in: The Outlaw Josey Wales-which used battle scenes from: The Red Badge of Courage. One small correction if you allow? It's not Barnaby Coast, but Barbary Coast.
Thank you for doing this video Mr. Skinner, I know that the show was called The Virginian, but Trampas was always my favorite character in the series. Do you ever plan on doing a video on James Drury?
James Drury actually died on April 6th, 2020, 12 days before his 86th birthday. I remember it vividly as it was all over the news and it was my birthday.
In the Book and the Movie versions of The Virginian, Trampas is a Villain who gets killed by the Virginian. I hate to admit it but I had not seen the movie versions until several years after I had seen the TV show and I knew Trampas to be a good natured if a little rowdy, cowboy. So I was a bit shocked to see an Evil Trampas.
The photo at 23 :24 shows Doug and wife Helen about to board a flight to the Philippines where Doug filmed one of the first TV movies, The Longest Hundred Miles.
I love the guitar intro. I never much gave a mind to Doug McCure, but your bio made me sit up and look. Apparently, Doug, didn't believe in marriage and behaved like a Hollywood rub around. Too bad McCure died relatively young for these days.
Doug believed in marriage enough to get married 5 times, a fan of 60 years, I'm friends with Doug's daughters, widow and second wife BarBara Luna. I was part of the campaign to get Doug inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers, which happened on April 12t,h 2014, I was there for it.
@@marthawelch4289 Yeah, marriage is hard and I guess it's better to separate than be absolutely miserable. It's hard when you are acting all the time and also, marriage depends on two people and other factors. It does not diminish my thought of him at all.

@Jerry Skinner 😊 love your documentaries, Jerry, the pictures, soundtrack, tone and pace. Great stories of fascinating people from a bygone era.
Always a pleasure to see the video you put up, Sir. Thank you.
Doug served for four years in the Naval Reserve, prior to his acting career, good experience for his early roles in Men Of Annapolis and The Enemy Below and later in Nobody's Perfect.
There was more here than meets the acting eye. He actually had me in tears on one episode of "The Virginian." You have to be above average to do that.
The best Virginian episodes were with the Trampas character..Doug nailed it..
Gunsmoke was the longest running tv western show ever ❤
Many have said it better. Thank you Mr. Skinner for an education on our touchstones in life.
Jim and Doug were very good friends in school where they became very good friends in later life we miss them all ❤
