Especially in a genre like Bluegrass where there are absolute monsters everywhere, they just don’t lay it all out every time they get a ride. In a popularity contest, Billy’s band probably wins. As far as the best Bluegrass band in terms of how well they have mastered their instruments, The Punch Brothers will stand up to anyone, and that includes any of the old cats. I mean, with a line-up like Thile, Eldridge, Pikelny, Witcher, and Kowart, you’d have a hard time finding a better complete Bluegrass lineup today or yesterday. The only band line-up you might find that would stack up with The Punch Brothers would be the Bluegrass All Star band that consisted of Rice, Douglas, Bush, O’Connor, and Crowe. They weren’t ever really a “band” though, just a gathering of aliens that got together when they wanted to take a break from cutting records for everyone else. These guys are entertaining as hell to watch, but they’re definitely still coming into their own. The other names I mentioned are world-class, generational kind of talents.

My son started following Billy around 4 years ago. I'm hooked on his music now and can't stop listening. We saw him live at Red Rocks last summer! I love this music, such talented musicians, great songwriting and they put everything they've got into it. I love you guys. Can't wait till we can see you live in Colorado again....
Love how he casually throws in old murder ballads with his own tunes. His playing is top notch but so is his writing. His songs are instant classics and sounds just as good if not better than the classics he plays in his live shows.

I like both, but do see your point for sure. I wouldn't mind if Billy took up the mantle of the Dead someday for sure. For me these guys in their current version are a lot like New Riders of the Purple Sage. Would be so cool if they opened for Dead and Co sometime, or if Billy played an acoustic set with them.
I’ve played bluegrass at many many festivals.... some small, and some very big. But I have never seen the audience get into the music like this. Magical!
Billy has been at the top of our playlists for about 5 years now and never imagined the band could be better until they added an extraordinary fiddle player to an already extraordinary band. There's been super groups before: Cream, Power Station, Blind Faith, The Highwaymen and The Traveling Wilburys come to mind. But for the music Billy's band plays the only comparison we can think of is Strength in Numbers, a band like Billy's composed of the absolute cream of the crop on bluegrass instruments but produced only one superb masterpiece of an album. That band consisted of Bela Fleck, Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush and Edgar Meyer. We would compare them very favorably. There's just no weak link. No one is just really, really good. They're all out of this world.
That is the ABSOLUTE best rendition of Dreadful Wind and Rain I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. @14:00 I love billy more and more everytime I put on a new show of his.

A little over 6 months ago was when I first heard of him, and fell in love with his sound immediately. Until recently, he seemed to be everywhere, sitting in with everyone. Now, not so much. When "all this" is over, I'll be happy to travel long distance to see Billy Strings and his band live. EZ

This is so good. Just started listening to Billy Strings and lovin it. My cousin played in Front Porch String Band when I was a kid so it's always been a part of my life. I know greatness when I hear it in Bluegrass and they surpassed it after 30 seconds of playing and singing. Jammin out!!!
Lovin the dueling banjos. One thing I love about the members of this band is that the members dont appear to compete with guests players with same instruments. Its just kickn ass, taking names, smiles, and having fun. Love the attitude. 👍😁👍👍

This more jam-band kind of grass is where the Mandolin truly spreads it's wings most as an instrument. Watching a good mandolin player jam is a TREAT!

This is so good. Just started listening to Billy Strings and lovin it. My cousin played in Front Porch String Band when I was a kid so it's always been a part of my life. I know greatness when I hear it in Bluegrass and they surpassed it after 30 seconds of playing and singing. Jammin out!!!

Lovin the dueling banjos. One thing I love about the members of this band is that the members dont appear to compete with guests players with same instruments. Its just kickn ass, taking names, smiles, and having fun. Love the attitude. 👍😁👍👍
