The first time I went fishing in the everglades was when I was 17 yeaRs old, in 2014 as a graduation gift from my dad. We fished with a man named Captain Gary, and tbh it was the most fun I've ever had fishing. I've fished up in Oregon. In the Umpqua, and tbh Chinook and steelhead salmon, tarpon and barracuda are my favorite fish to catch
Well what can I say, this is the Everglades, good place, superb conservatory condition and the best place for fish. Not even the virgin mangrove forest of Papua New Guinea can match the Everglades. Wonderful video guys. My sons just love it.
the little sound effect of the line coming off the spool cracks me up..I'd like to see you go back and make the same show today ; ) that would be sweet ! can y'all remember where those fin-nor reels were made back then ??
plugs are hard plastic baits with treble hooks. With live bait on a J hook, you will need to set the hook. With a circle hook, you allow the fish to hook itself by just reeling when the fish takes the bait. Bowing to a tarpon when he jumps allows the line to go slack, so when the fish shakes it's head it won't break the line or throw the hook.
AWESOME! I've fished them at Boca Grande what a blast! And you definatly have to "Bow to the King several times to get one in! Great stuff love your videos! I'm from Maine and I went out fishing for Reds and Snook onetime. And decided right then and there that's where I'm retiring! (At the age of 48)
I'm not a fan of gaffs for tarpon, but Gary is a true pro and knows how to take care of the fish. I would rather wear the fish our more and make it easier to handle them.
Blair, On the golden Eye Maverick Lure, did I hear you say you AD a circle hook too the back treble hook? just slip the circle hook eye over the treble or ? '?
What's the best tactic when they start jumping as much as they do here? I've always struggled with what the best tact would be. I've read some articles, and try and imitate what I see here, but still seem to have trouble reacting....
Hey guys I don't really understand plugs, could somebody explain them to me? Also, are the hooks you guys are using in this video J hooks? One more thing, how do you set the hook into a tarpon with a J hook and then how do you do it with a circle hook, and when you bow to the king do you still maintain pressure on the line and just don't pull quite as hard or do you completely point your rod at it right when it jumps and therefore let slack into your line?
@risenflame Bow to the king, when they jump, point your rod at them to give some slack. If you are too tight when they jump, they will either break your line or throw your hook.
Never caught a Tarpon yet. But sure want to in the next month and a half. I've got DOA Terror Eyz, other DOA lures, and MirrorLure Plugs to. I went to the Thousand Island channel and docks in search for them and all I got was trout and reds there. They gotta be there at this time of year. Anybody know where else? Blair? Got this strong feeling their in the Thousand Island Channels and house docks.
I lose tarpon with top water lures all the time in my canal. SO what should i try? They are only about 2 or 3 foot maybe 4 but not often? I need help????
I have a specific spot where I catch 10-20 lbs guys all the time. Use freelined shrimp on a 2/0 or 3/0 hook cast it out and let it sit with the bail open, you can rest it against a chair or just hold it, once they pick it up just start reeling until you feel the fish. That's the easiest way to hook these fish. Also if you rig a live shrimp on a jighead and pull it through the water they'll gobble that. They'll also hit small soft plastics like DOA Terroreyes, or a my preferred artificial is jerk bait of proper size just wait for them to roll and cast in front. Just know that you'll probably land of 2 out of 10 fish if you're lucky. These small ones are even harder to keep hooked than the big guys if you ask me. Always remember to bow to the king!
So I just realized you guys were only using 40lb braid for 100+ lb tarpon. Where I'll be fishing I'd probably catch a 60lb tarpon on a good day, but I'm a first time tarpon fisherman so is it alright for me to use 50lb braid and a penn battle 6000 paired with an 8 foot offshore angler medium action surf rod? Also, I'll be fishing off of a pier.
There's nothing like catching tarpon with plugs, (spell correction wants me to catch tampons). You will miss tons of fish, but it's so much more fun than anything else, once you finally land one.
Alright, I think I might go with a penn battle 5000 instead of a 6000, and step it down to 40lb braid......I wonder if the smaller reel will still pair well with the 8 foot rod
RIP Capt. Gary Thompson. You were one of a kind, and a truly impressive Everglades guide.
R.I.P. Gary Thompson. We lost a true Everglades Tarpon icon when we lost Gary a few months ago. What a great guy.
True that.
Addictive Fishing inspired me to start my UA-cam channel! Love these early episodes!
Holy crap, this fishing looks intense. Makes my typical fishing for trout look like sleep away camp.

What are some good lures for night fishing for tarpon? I'm fishing the st lucie river for them? i have gotten acouple on a lipless crankbait
I'm not a fan of gaffs for tarpon, but Gary is a true pro and knows how to take care of the fish. I would rather wear the fish our more and make it easier to handle them.
Hey what size circle hooks would you get for the size tarpon that I said I'll most likely be catching? Are mustad 7/0 and 8/0 too big?
Blair, On the golden Eye Maverick Lure, did I hear you say you AD a circle hook too the back treble hook? just slip the circle hook eye over the treble or ?

I love Florida fishing way to go! HOOKEM IN THE MOUTH!
im going down to the keys during the summer to catch tarpon. What would you recommend to use? As in line, bait, and reel?
bow to the king - point your rod at them when they jump to minimize them throwing the hook. Use circle hooks.
Hey what line, reels and rods were u guys using
+LunkerLimits Old Cape Fear rods, powerpro at the time and FIN NOR 12a reels.
pleboy.
LunkerLimits
+roby Santos the next

That was awesome
would a penn battle II 6000 on a 7 foot medium-heavy ugly stick, spooled up with 30lb bull buster and a 50 pound mono leader be good for tarpon?
***** Youll be better off just getting some 200 lb strength line for $30 so you don't miss a catch
Nonononono don't do that do what you original wanted
That's what I use, but I use 50 lb power pro braid
I love fishing
Amazing!
Wow fantastic bro
Awesome show! rick Murphy who?

I hate to keep bothering you, but do you guys have an instructional video about how to bow to a tarpon?
Absolutely awesome.
Merci

We were using subsurface hard baits.
What time of the year is this? I'm thinking about taking a trip but I want some reds and snook. What do you think about January?

Thanks, you are the man when it comes to fishing! Appreciate it
