After surgery it's always important not to put any extra stress or strain on an incision lines. How we sleep makes a very big difference. Usually we want to do something to have gravity help reduce swelling and so a lot of times we need to be elevated after surgery and we don't want to put stress on incision lines like on a tummy tuck. We want a little bend at the waist so you are not straight upright pulling on an area that you can't tell you are pulling on.
Most of the time after surgery we want to have you elevated, maybe in a recliner chair and not sleeping on your sides either. If you sleep on the side, the side that's down is going to swell twice as much as the other side. You can pop stitches and have troubles healing. Usually we are restricted for the first two weeks afterwards after a couple weeks maybe you can start to tilt a little bit towards the sides but certainly not sleep on one side all night.
By the time you are three or four weeks up we can start to reduce the elevation and just sleep well on your side but you'd have to be careful and you need to talk to your doctor about it because some things about the particular surgery you have may change what those restrictions are or how long you need to follow them. The best thing to do is talk to your doctor and then follow those restrictions.
