Early Spring Blooms in Our Zone 5 Garden
Less than two weeks after a cold streak and snow that blanketed our garden, there are quite a few fruits and vegetables that are already growing and blooming, and in this short spring garden tour video, we talk about and show you which plants are already growing her in zone 5 Wisconsin.
We have everything from gooseberry bushes, raspberries, asparagus, leeks, plum trees, and more. Really, when we think about the excitement we feel for the upcoming garden season, this is where we start. We start with the first blooms of our honeyberry bushes and the bees pollinating those honey berry flowers. We look at our apple trees and how they are opening up, and we are filled with anticipation of the garden soon to come.
As an added bonus, we throw in a little raspberry can pruning as well.

First outdoor vegetables for me is always something I did not plant but nature provides generously in my garden every year, i.e. dandelions, violets, cleavers, creepers, waterleaves, nettles, etc.

Everything is growing faster than normal in zone 6 WNY. This is the first time I've had hosta coming up before tulips have bloomed lol

I accidentally over-wintered leeks last year (zone 5). They put up these amazing flowers (like Globemaster alliums). Easily 4 feet tall with spherical flower clusters that attracted so many happy bees. This year, I purposefully over-wintered more to get the same result.

My rhubarb is probably the farthest along. My honeyberries only have a flowers with just a few leaves showing so far. My parsnips, kale and even a swiss chard overwintered. Garlic is looking good and I just planted my onions this morning before tonight's rain.
