I wish I had seen this before I bought my Atomos Ninja. I’m the first to admit I went for the Atomos after watching reviews when it was way beyond my experience and abilities and it has remained on the shelf for months as I got totally confused with recording ProRes and I just needed a monitor and not a recorder. I’m going to buy this Portkeys now so thanks for this video … just wish I had seen it a few months ago !! :-((
Dang. Sounds like a budget option to an Atomos Shinobi, which i literally just bought. This deff should be the "go to" for anyone on a budget. I for sure will tell people this is what to get in that price. The low LIT count is where Im still happy with my Shinobi because I did a shoot last weekened out on a boat high noon and I saw everything on my monitor without a sun shade NO problems at all. But I do want to add to what you said in the beginning - a monitor will change everything. Cinematography was only a hobby of mine when Covid hit but after COVID ended for us in the US? I got into it more professionally and JUST getting a monitor changed everything for me. The framing, the LUTs, the focus peakiing, the false color. I never thought a monitor would change the quality of my shooting.
I don't have time to watch video ATM. Just quick question:..❓can you use the tiuxh screen just like the cameras LCD touch screen to adjust settings and actually fire the shutter button remotely?
From experience, anything short of 1000 nits outside is no use. It's not in the price range of a 1000 nits territory so I'm not complaining. But all the tools packed into it are useless if you can't see the image. If you're purchasing a sub 1000 nits monitor for indoor use only it's a perfect monitor. But I'd advise saving up just a bit more ans getting the Shinobi
Not entirely correct. I used this for 8 hours filming an outdoor event and it was fine. Wasn’t optimal but with the sunshade it was very usable and did quite well. The nit output on manufacturers always vary that’s why I did a side by side with three monitors to show the brightness between 600 nits, 1200 nits and 2200 nits with very small differences
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema love your channel. But I was disappointed with the indoors comparison. The difference in brightness can truly be judged outside. Furthermore, I've learned I can rely little on online reviews. I did a shoot in May in Capernaum, and while it's not the hottest it gets here, the a6600 screen was impossible to see, and it overheated a few minutes in. Even my Sigma fp which all UA-camrs say doesn't overheat in fact overheated. I respect that you're a working professional. I respect your opinion. But I've personally found that monitor sunshades while effective often aren't enough.

Hey Jason, I know you're releasing another comparison video using the a6000. I have an a6000 and want to get the most dynamic range out of my camera. I’ve seen people recommend lowering contrast and saturation for video and then correcting in post, but I want the most accurate version of that, you can probably do a video about it too. Can you do a LUT for neutral profile with -3,-3,0 using a color checker? So a6000 users can have the most DR available on video with a simple drag and drop LUT.
Hey Wayne, I had the a6100 in which is basically the 4K version of the a6000. I do not think there is way to get more dynamic range out of them because the camera does this on the higher-end models with color profiles (Cine, S-LOG) by exposing more for shadows or highlights. the a6000/6100 do not have the panning ability so its across the whole color curve when to adjust profiles. They only have a 50-100mbps (6-12 MB/s) interface so its not enough to squeeze too much detail in unless you sacrifice in areas, shadows or highlights. Yeah, imagine is someone figured out how to hack these Sony cameras like they semi-did with Canon (Magic Lantern) Bro, it would destroy the cinema camera market.
Yes he is correct. You can’t get better dynamic range out of the camera. The only reason I film in a flatter profile is to reduce the over contrast and saturation the sensor provides
@JasonMorrisphotocinema What do you think of the Portkeys 7"? And any thoughts on Osee Lilmon 5 and Viltrox DC-X3 6"? I'm going to buy a monitor and would love to know what you recommend.
Hey Jason, can you talk about the horrible colour spectrum portkeys uses for their false colour? It has ARRI mode and also USER mode. The user mode doesn't use the normal colour spectrum and also it is overlayed in a horrible way that makes it hard to understand what you're looking at.
Hello Jason, Is it possible to record on the camera and on the external recorder at the same time? Let's imagine I have a Sony ZVE-1, with an external recorder/monitor, can I record on the camera and on the external monitor at the same time?
Cellphones in general have better displays than the average external monitor of the same screen space. (They mass produce these phones so therefor the price of the displays are sold in bulk at a huge price cut.) The only real draw back is the noticeable latency if you are doing video. Technically, most cellphones with USB-C have the ability to do everything that a external monitor/recorder and then some but this would require the Android/iOS SDKs to allow this to happen. Maybe, someone will get past these restrictions one day and eliminate having to buy these super expensive external recorders.
