Hi there! A comparison many of You where waiting and asking for a long time, JBL LSR305 and Mackie MR524. Did Mackie manage to surpass my long time favourite in this class? Mackie is a bit more compact and looks better which is always nice, but the build quality is on similar, only decent level. Soundwise Mackie has a bit of advantage in all imprtant mid ranges where MR524 sounds fuller and smoother, yet open and detailed. Bass and treble is where I would say they are even. Mackie sounds a bit more natural and balanced overall. In the end I liked Mackie a bit more and I must say that MR524 is my new favourite monitor in this class. What do You think? Which one sounds better in Your oponion? Which one would You buy? Let me know in the comments below! Cheers!
On my setup the Mackies are a bit brighter sounding than the JBLs. And a few more questions: Which -has better soundstage in width and in depth too? -has better vocals and how they are presented in space (laid back, upfront / in-your-face)? -is easier to listen to? The spatial audio / vocal positioning probably one of those things which can't get through yt videos, because it's heavily depends on the listeners speakers.
I wanted JBL cause everybody on gearslutz and reddit raving about them. Later I accidentally found review about excellence of Adam T5V (some compared them to A5X) and almost ordered it but listening to few comparisons of Macie I want them even more. Sadly there’s not so much info about them
Thanks for your wonderful comparisons! As studio monitors for digital piano playing, would you recommend the MR524, JBL 305P or E5? The bass clarity is especially important (not loudness, mainly clarity) and noticed both t5v and focal alpha50 to be a bit muffled at low freq. I'm leaning towards the 305P Mk2 and your thoughts would be most welcome! thanks Luca
Yes, it seems that the MR524 is the new King of the Hill :) The mid range is "full-blooded" and clearly more natural, without LSR305's parasitic plastic overtones, and slightly better (warmer, more bodily) than the T5V. The highs of the MR524 are noticeably better than the Eris E5, which I appreciate for reliable voice transmission. Very good sound. But the best twitter among all is in T5V. The high frequencies of the T5V are very detailed, airy, but not bulging, not intrusive at all. Nevertheless, the champion is MR524. They are more accessible, more compact and better transmit the most important for human sound perception - the mid range. Thank you, Michal. To hear this and to compare with each other became possible only thanks to you.
The track 'Deep' sounds like it was mixed in decisions on them, and it sounds translated to the JBL's fine. JBl seems to color and prop everything up beautifully, but seems to make things more pleasant than they are.
Just got my Mackies MR524 and they are impressive. Had to mix with them and it turned out great. Nice flat response, very natural sound with nice clarity on the high-end. It lacks in the 20-35hz range, but it is only a 5' woofer. And it surprising, this video gives a pretty accurate idea on how they actually sound compared to others. Definitely the new king of this price range.
I'm comparing the Mackie's to my JBL 305's currently in my studio. One thing going for the JBL is the 3D imaging they can produce. The Mackie's seem to lack that 3D space which the mic in these videos can't pick up. I think the Mackie emphasizes the critical midrange much better but I do wish it had the same 3D image that the JBL's did. Using the JBL for some binural panning and then the Mackies for dialing in mid-range in a mix would be a good compliment to each other. I still need to try out the new Fluid Audio FX50's before deciding to keep the Mackies.
JBL's sounded better on some tracks, the Mackie on others. I do like how the Mackie is smaller though. Wonder if it can match the imaging and sound stage of the JBL which is excellent.
i like when a small company only makes monitors, not a shit ton of other products. They can focus on putting out a decent priced monitor that can compete with some high end models, for a resonable price. so have to give it to JBL. Always dont sleep on JBL other company Kali Audio
In my room Mackie sound more clear and less boxy than the JBL, and i'm monitoring this comparison at my studio with a pair of JBL305 lol... You know, if u have a small room like mine, u will have some resonant frequencies at certain points, like a 147hz peak... I'm considering to get a pair of Mackie MR624 and stay with my JBL for mono monitoring.
Basically identical sound with 1 difference: Mackies got a nasty notch in mids, and JBL got that nasty notch a little lower, in the bass area. JBL are better for vocals since they make the vocal sound much more full with those mids, but Mackies are better for EDM since that important bass area is well presented. Mackie's sound also got hyped highs - they sound quite close to KRK Rokit's actually.
Audio newbie here. I'm kind of torn with this one. Mackie does sound more full-bodied but with a boomier, muddier low end, while JBL produces a cleaner but slightly thinner sound. Mackie sounds more pleasant but JBL sounds roomier & more honest. Am I making any sense?
Muddy ? Not one bit, maybe the speakers you are listening from and the UA-cam as well as the recording MIC are coloring the sound. I ahve thsi pair and MUDDY is not the word i would use for its tight bass. Also JBL sounds way thinner in real life, the sweet mid range of the mackie won it for me. Not to mention they are pretty even in other areas, except buil;d quality, Mackie Trumps JBL here.
I have tested both in my own studio/theatre room. I understand what you mean; however, I do not agree with your assessment of the Mackie's low end as being muddy or boomier. It might be the specific room/headphones/speakers your listening from. I actually think the mackie's have a more accurate bass response, but the roll off just starts earlier given the smaller size of the box -- could benefit greatly if paired with a sub. *Aesthetically, I prefer the JBL overall. In terms of size and compactness, I (obviously) would give the nod to mackie here. These are personal aesthetic preferences, but I prefer a much more compact looking speaker -- the smaller the better!

I have tested both in my room. The new 5" mackies have better, more natural sounding, mids -- but certainly not better than my neumann kh120. The bump also makes vocals come out just a bit more making the mids sound sweet and is a tool for mixing mid focused instruments in a mix like vocals, guitars etc. The 306p's sound even more neutral to me with improved stereo imaging and sense of 3D. It's a bit less flattering though for general listening. It's not worth getting them though if you already have lsr305's. Just managed to get them for an insane price.
are you using XLR for the JBL 305p or other?
hi guys, what do you think fore recording, mixing, generaly for home studio which is better? mackie or lsr305? thanks
My personal preference: go with the Mackies. BUT pair it with a sub when checking the low end, especially if your getting the 5 inch version over the 6" *I should note that from my own testing, bad recordings are more obvious with the Mackies. I'm keeping my JBLs as I use them more for GENERAL music listening.
Hi, which one is better for video editing audio?
Anything... lol, unless if you're doing it for the same reason an audio engineer would, "editing audio".....
does the mackies have the buzzing noise when listening at close range with no sound on?
No buzzing, rather high pitched hissing from tweeter. This is common issue with active monitors. In MR524 it is present and audible, but I would consider it to be acceptable. JBL also hiss, even more than Mackie
@@DSAUDIOreview thanks and noted. i'm buying the Mackie.
Can i pair these monitors (mr524) to a dac via xrl or i may need an amp? Thanks!
No amp needed. Just connect monitors with DAC via XLR cables and You are good to go
@@DSAUDIOreview thanks. One more question, how i can pair these monitor speakers to a cd player? Thanks a lot!
You just use different set of cables. Something like this for example: amzn.to/2BPXypY
I'm watch this video "Mackie 524 vs JBL 305" on Mackie 524)) love Mackie*
u like them?
I'm listening on the MR624. It shouldn't matter, but the Mackie sounds fuller and more clear here.
Мне кажется или у маков верхов дофига?
Mackie: too twangy. JBL: too muddy. I’d take the woofer from mackie and tweeter from jbl
But the tweeter on the Mackie can be set on a different setting..
i disagree. and you are just making up bullshit at this point.
My Mackie was a combination: for some sounds twangy, for others muddy
highs on mackie are higher, and midrange not enough microdynamics
Can you please define "microdynamics"? Is this really a thing that can be measured?
@@matsudakodo it can be measured. You can record them playing and then compare these recordings in DAW
I felt pity of JBLs
I tried all the macs that they have, I work for focal
The quality of the packs over the past 10 years is awful, like a hi-fi acoustics sound
the sound is not read
the mix sounds like a hi-fi acoustics
the quality of monitors is terrible
Take in this price dia-ONE all just not meki
mek it hifay acoustics similar to the development of engineers for sound engineers
for fans of hi-fi sound for home theater to listen to music - yes
for creating mixes, mixing, working with sound - definitely not
Awesome review again! JBL's newest LSR705p seems to be hard to beat, although a lot more expensive. Hope you get a chance to check them out.
