15 & 16 Dec 1972 ('Close to the Edge' Tour)
And You And I
[I Cord Of Life]
A man conceived a moment's answer to the dream
Staying the flowers daily, sensing all the themes
As a foundation left to create the spiral aim
A movement regained and regarded both the same
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Changed only for a sight of sound, the space agreed
Between the picture of time behind the face of need
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
Emotion revealed as the ocean maid
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Coins and crosses
Never know their fruitless worth
Cords are broken
Locked inside the mother Earth
They won't hide and hold, they won't tell you
Watching the world, watching all of the world
Watching us go by
And you and I climb over the sea to the valley
And you and I reached out for reasons to call
[II Eclipse]
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
Emotions revealed as the ocean maid
As a movement regained and regarded both the same
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
[III The Preacher, The Teacher]
Sad preacher nailed upon the coloured door of time
Insane teacher be there reminded of the rhyme
There'll be no mutant enemy we shall certify
Political ends as sad remains will die
Reach out as forward tastes begin to enter you
I listened hard but could not see
Life tempo change out and inside me
The preacher trained in all to lose his name
The teacher travels, asking to be shown the same
In the end we'll agree, we'll accept, we'll immortalize
That the truth of man maturing in his eyes
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
As a moment regained and regarded both the same
Emotion revealed as the ocean maid
A clearer future, morning, evening, nights with you
[IV Apocalypse]
And you and I climb, crossing the shapes of the morning
And you and I reach over the sun for the river
And you and I climb, clearer towards the movement
And you and I called over valleys of endless seas

Steve Howe can majestically play anything that has strings.
@Alaric Bergeron I AGREE WHIT YOU, STEVE IS THE BEST IN THE GUITAR.
SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO UN FAN DE LA MUSICA PROGRESIVA
They were brilliant musicians
Amen on that. PURE TALENT!
I wonder how a string tanga might sound?
This song and Starship Trooper started my prog rock journey in the 70's. Sadly now people are leaving us one by one . R.I.P Chris and Alan. May you continue your journeys
and Peter
I SO agree Mister Nuts! Robin Williams death was a really tough one as well!
Love yes
Just joined back recently!
And Peter
Back when great music was also appreciated by the masses.
That voice!! So pure. No one else has it like Jon
I love the vocals he provided for Tangerine Dream in the 80s.
I love Jon Anderson's voice
Funny, I can't stand it, but the genius of the band makes it somehow bearable. I wonder how Deep Purple's Ian Gilan or Elvis would have sounded.
@@mikedaniels3009 Elvis in Yes?
Jon Anderson the voice of Yes.
Without Jon Anderson Yes is NO.
I love everybody No.1 Melody
In 1978 I was 11 & wanted to go to a concert with my older cousins so bad that when I heard them talking about going to see Yes in the round I begged them to let me come.
My older cousin (defacto leader of the others) looked at me & said "if you can sing one Yes song you can come" I immediately sang You & I.
So on Sunday of Labor Day weekend 1978 I sat in the New Haven Coliseum with my cousins & Yes!
And on my 1st day of school the following week I wore my little to big on me Yes concert shirt. A beautiful three quarter sleeve baseball shirt.
And Yes delivered everything I had hoped for & more that night!
I saw them in Maryland just a few days after that. It was a sold out concert. We went to the Capitol Center to see if there were any seats available. Two second row tickets had just been returned. It was an amazing concert. We could almost touch them, we were so close. Steve Howe had about 15 different guitars set out. He just effortlessly picked them up throughout songs and didn't miss a note. Kids today haven't got a clue what great music is. Yes is the best!
Yes is one of the few bands where their live performances outdo their records. There is something very special about seeing and hearing Yes live. It is truly transcendent.
Absolutely!
Wish i was alive then to hear it
Yes, RUSH, EL&P, King Krimson …..
@@Theodore764 You just did.
Perpetual Change off Yessongs had this whole new alt part. I burned it from my vinyl copy. I wish it had been in that new DVD. I am still trying to find this version of a Yes song I heard on satellite radio awhile back. It was the best live song I have heard from them. I tried to look it up. It was off deep tracks station. Yours is no Disgrace? One other one I noticed was the extended jam end on "A venture" as part of steven wilson remix I think?. whoooaaaa!!!! lol
Jon Anderson is truly a one in a million vocalist. Without him - no Yes.
Not sure many appreciate how complex their music was. They did more than just reinvent music, they created emotion.
Agreed
Especially relayer
LOL people appreciate their musical complexity just fine. They are well known for it, in fact.
Своєю музикою вони змінили час та простір,коли звучить їх музика,нема ні часу ні простору
Oh I do!!! ❤❤❤
Christopher Squire alive forever in my soul

In many souls....
I loved Chris Squire so much. Amazing bass player, iconic. Saw them in 1972 at 15 years old!
FIFTY YEARS OLD and STILL mind blowing.
My favorite Yes song.. about creation, life, why we are here.. it really is a universal masterpiece.. got me as a teenager.. still gets me.
No one has even come close to the sublime artistry of yes.
What can one say? Just mesmerizing music. These guys made such a huge impact on the world for so many of us. Thank you, Yes!
Five gifted musicans creating magic whose music will always be timeless. Yes is a blessing.
Caution : Geniuses at work. Look at Steve Howe. Absolutely amazing. How can a group sound better live than their albums? Thank goodness we were privalaged to witness them in the 70's and beyond.
The best bands do imo. The studio might be the best place as far as true creative freedom. But a "band" is really a function of certain styles of music imo. Even if you think about early recordings of rock classics, Presely, Fats Domino, etc and then later with Zeppelin, the Who, etc they recorded basically live as a band. Overdubbing was sparsely implemented for the most part. My point is "rock music" is one of those styles where the band and that live performance is central to the music. The energy of a live performance and the freedom it provides to stray from the studio version all create this extra layer of expression.
Yes and Led Zeppelin are to me bands where the definitive live albums crush all of their other works imo.
A M E N !
This brings tears and chills this was on the juke box in the sailors arms in Newquay absolutely hammered it take me back I'm 70 an young
YES LIVE AMAZING 😂😊
@@steveludgate7364 You sound passionate about Yes like I am. Keep listening and close your eyes and drift away.
And I Love Steve Howes expressions while he plays together with his Instruments and the music he plays you can read and feel it!!!!
You can tell by Steve's facial expressions that he obviously loves to play that lap steel - that and he knows he's in one of the greatest bands of all time.
He's happy knowing that he helped make them that.
U are nest
What a great band. I was going to school and my room mate, Joe from Brooklyn, played Yessongs. What a great triple album. I did not listen to Yes till just recent. What a great memory.
amen..yes is one of the most natural greats of 70s music.
@@BluesLicks101 and then Steve went on to tear it all down as he turned them into a karaoke band with no emotion what-so-ever.
Their music and lyrics were magical, and lifted you above earthly things. Thank You!
And you and I to me is about our relationship with the creator
I really think this is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. The melody is just so beautiful, and the arrangement is so on the spot. Not even to mention the musicianship needed to perform that on stage in the early 70's.
Most underrated band in history I’m 58 absolutely phenomenal band
I'm 63 and agree 100%. This song gives me goosebumps. Not many do that.
The VOICE, the LYRICS, the TUNES, the CONTENTMENT......MAGIC !!!!! The one thing in my childhood that was real ! The exact same emotions I had over 50 years ago while listening to them, are once again washing over and through me !!! WOW, this is amazingly awe-inspiring !! 😍🥀🙋🏻♀️
Absolutely magical. Rest in peace Chris and Alan . Sorely missed .
"Close to the Edge" is something beyond space and time ..
No doubt TonyKeith…mind blowing how talented they are
Best prog rock song ever
I love Alan White's energy and enthusiasm. He's really enjoying being a member of the Band & doing a great job.👍
I feel truly blessed to have been 18 years old when Yessongs was released, no one before or after would come of age in a better musical era. My best friend died recently and it was his wish that this song was played at his funeral.
It was a great time for music and life itself. R.I.P for your friend.
Condolences to you for the loss of your friend saw them at the Rainbow about 1972ish still remember if it was yesterday.
Not to be weird about it but I too would want this version of this song played. something about it, I don't know how to say what it is.
I saw them for the first time in 1973 on the "Yessongs" tour. It still ranks high in the top five concerts I have ever seen.
Yes and Genesis were two magical groups.
I'm a big fan of you all, from Japan🌸🇯🇵
It's surprising that this live was held 26 years before I was born, because your musics always make me feel freshness. Although I wish I could have been born more earlier, I'm literally pleased to have found this wonderful band in my lifetime🥰
I still remember all the lyrics for 46 years. Best album ever made.
The Fender Slide solo, and Jon's voice literally moves me to tears every time!...This entire album is just musical joy/heaven/nirvana, all of the above! glad to finally see they got in the R&R HOF
I dont think r and r hof does any justice for them. They are more in the same category as classical or jazz players than rock
Yes is at their best live and this is one of their masterpieces.
The whole Close to the Edge album is a big masterpiece!
Vincent Fillieule Agreed. It's their finest hour IMO.
This was my second concert ever ! First was Emerson Lake and Palmer the week before !
What a month, my man!!!!
Michael Whittemore ................did you go for the hat trick?
Lucky man you are.
@@foreverpinkf.7603 ......... yip, it was no disgrace 😜
Awesome.. were you close to the edge... of the stage
This is the greatest version of the song by far. Pure magic.
So sweet....
wow!awesome!🇱🇷
RIP CS. This was the song that started it for me.
The absolute best version. Breaks my heart every time.
The way these guys are so tight in their playing. It's amazing.
This is one of those songs you just must listen to.
RIP. Chris Squire
❤
Simply ahead of their time, they are phenomenal!
Simply Love this song. RIP Chris!
62 years old and you are my absolute favorite band ever such memories and such love
Still amazes me how they manage the rubato and extreme tempo changes. Monsterously talented band 💕
That small bit of pure spiritual bliss and majesty.. from about 4:35-4:55 gets me every time!
I feel exactly the same...
Its called frisson
It's called Steve Howe on the lap steel
GOOOOOOSSSSBBBUMPS
They really tapped into a part of our souls when I was a teenager it was so amazing I mean it still is but then I had never experienced anything like it
Saw them at the Arie Crown in Chicago 9/22/72....and 37 shows and 43 years after that. No band I ever saw did anything remotely like this.Best musicianship in one band ever.
Magnetron33 I agree definitely best musicianship ever when you experienced this band live it was almost painful to witness that much talent on one stage
The only group to rival their talent was Blind Faith. Clapton, Winwood, Baker and Gretch. I may have mispelled that. Apologies Rick.
1st saw them in 1968 with Taste at the Royal Albert Hall supporting Cream.
@@raypoole5003 Epic! Love Rory and fan of YES sibce 70. You are really lucky to have been at that show!. Loved Cream too!
One of my all-time favorites. Mind blowing with all members on their peak.
1972. I can't think of any bands today that even come close to Yes from the 70s.
I cant think of a band from the past 25 years.
Some may say Radiohead. But their genius comes from something completly different from Yes.
it could only be Tool
Only KC are a rival to Yes
@@juaniriarte1193 Genesis w/Gabriel comes to mind
One of the best all time songs IMHO adding Steve Howe excellent slide guitar always brings chills up my spine
Yes played at a crappy place called Hollywood Sportatodium FL 1973 It was incredible how this band was able to give such a performance, place was full of smoke. Top 10 for me
😥😥😥😥😥
Since when is a slide guitar associated with rock? YES.
I think I have just died and gone to heaven. The live Yessongs album (and the studio album Close to the Edge) was my introduction to Yes way back in the early 1970s as an impressionable teenager (I blame my older sister). I must have listened to it hundreds, maybe even over a thousand times, such that I know all the words and the little "asides" that came during the live performance. I never even knew until today that there was a video of the same performance out there. Thankyou a million times for uploading this - you have made a slightly older man very very happy indeed.
Same for me! But me it was in the 90's when the band recorded the Talk album. I see the tour with Rabin and Kaye. This was my first introduction live with the band. After I saw Yes in 2001, 2004 and after Jon Anderson left unfortunately. Nobody can sing like Jon Anderson!
That's me as well, though it was my older brother in college and I in high school that first captured my heart and imagination, I will forever be imprinted by the journeys these wonderful souls have taken me on... my personal reveal stated earlier in this chat is that Jon was my high school crush and ...
Me too Roy! Me too! ❤I’m giddy with glee at having this incredible talent available to view at any time!! this is a miracle to me! I saw them live in Detroit when I was 17 in 1980! Life changing TRIP! What a wonderful time to be aLIVE!!
@@gaelsebastiani2198 Nobody!
Close to the edge, one of the best albums ever
Heavenly soul-affirming music. Brings back my teenage dreams 45 years later.
Damn, I love this song ! The middle part with Steve Howe on the Pedal Steel guitar is just Magical and Ethereal.
I first say Yes perform live May 1979 in the Boston Garden. I was forever changed that day, and realized Yes was not a band to make pop-hits, they were out to push the limits of music and their talents together. Their performance was other worldly, mesmerizing and larger than life.
Classic, no one else like YES!!!
I saw Yes on their "In The Round" tour on that fancy revolving stage that they had. They were outstanding!
I did also. Great concert
When my time is up I will listen to Led Zeppelin,Pink Floyd, and Yes with the best headphones I can get my hands on. Then and only then I shall go peacefully into the night! All true genious and so far ahead of their time!
Amen Brother! And i have rediscovered some Elton John/Bernie Taupin Masterpieces pre- Yellow Brick road ?IMO
....and Pet Sounds(Beach Boys) seriously, check them out!
and Genesis before Peter Gabriel left
I'm glad Yes had high resolution footage of their 70s performances unlike Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Genesis' final tour with Peter Gabriel
And the gods made music...
steve is without a doubt one off the greatest players
Yes have kept me going all these years...
great to see and hear this great band again, so beautiful and relaxing. I could not know that I would love them again decades later and in a much different way. Very meditative feeling at 56.
I first saw Yes when they toured Close to the Edge. I was 17,I think. It was the best live concert I think I have ever seen. I saw them 4 more times. Each show being awesome. Steve Howe is underappreciated as a guitarist. Jon Anderson's vocals are outstanding. The band is one of the best.
Seminal album of the time . Still on my shelf. Admittedly the sleeve is looking a bit ragged now. Still play it to annoy the neighbours And at 72 still gives me great pleasure.
These are the definitive live performances of some of the most beautiful and intricate rock music ever written ... IMO of course.
Agree
Cristobal Garcia Interesting, I was by chance listening to this during my commute last night and this morning (I have Yessongs and Going for the One on a USB stick in my car); then I saw your comment. I had forgotten that these were on UA-cam! To me, it's like watching the first live performances of Beethoven's 9th Symphony or something if video cameras were invented back then.
that's how I feel about the keys to ascension version of Awaken...it's beyond magnificent.
Nobody, I say nobody elevated the possibilities of the steel like Howe.
One of the most uplifting, apotheosic and grandiose pieces ever made in rock history (and this live rendition one of the best ever performed)
Dicen los que saben que estos son, quizás, los 10 minutos mas hermosos en la historia de la música. Y como yo no soy nadie para afirmarlo o negarlo, simplemente los disfruto..........
I LOVE Yes!! They can just make me stare, next thing, I'm wiping a tear off my cheek... RIP Squire, White. Talent in every member!
just a wonderful group of beatiful muscians. i love those guys.
If I had children of my own I’d raised them listening to songs like this one. 💖
I did! My son turned into a musician himself. Still into progressive music, though I will say he listens to some rap and screaming that I don’t particularly care for, even though I’ve tried to be open to it.
This masterpiece always gave me a glorious vibe, and made me proud of myself. It lifted everything that awful in this world.
Such a masterpiece! one of the best songs ever written! pure magic! I love it so much.♥
Saw them at Reading 75 &"Earls Court in 76 in their pomp, mesmerising stuff- Close to the edge is one of the best albums of all time - fabulous musicians.
Wait, when did glitter capes go outta fashion?
Never
Rick Wakeman, Elvis, Dracula, and Superman make it cool: anyone else looks stupid.
You forgot Darth Vader.
He mastered the bass as if it were a guitar. Pure geneisis. . I know he flew right up to heaven like he did across the stage .The best bass player their was,. John and Joan KERRIGAN .
BoTuLisM SHoVeL Rick wore one two days ago in Oslo so NEVER
5:43 the goosebumps will ALWAYS be there. It's funny how those notes are used for the 1st time in the 1st part of the song called "Cord of Life", because that title is so accurate to that beginning...
This version is quite different to the folk version in the original album, but that's probably what makes it so interesting to listen to. Steve Howe is an amazing guitarist.
Steve's slide playing is just so special in this performance. Really inspired me to pick up the guitar as a teenager, not my main instrument but it's still inspiring me to keep practicing.
I still don't know what Steve & Chris are harmonizing during 'Coins & Crosses' verse
after all these decades but it is so so magcal
Turn round tailor, assaulting
All the mornings of the interest shown,
Presenting one another to the cord
All left dying, rediscovered
Of the door that turned round
To close the cover, all the
interest shown
To turn one another, to the
sign at the time float your climb
I'm still trying to decipher the chant at the end of To Be Over 48 years later
I recently find this group and this song makes me travel and feel in another planet ❤
On of the most brilliant songs/albums of all eternity!!!!!!!! Thank you!
40 years gone when I first time have listened them and this song makes a goose skin of me
Saw them 1979 the first time. Amazing❤
Personal Reveal; I would have had Jon's children. I was so infatuated as a teen and into my twenties with this angelic being of light.
Close to The Edge is a masterpiece!❤️
This song gives me such chills each and every time I hear it. Best album ever!
Incredible talent with an angelic singer. I love them ALL! Incredible.
Can I just love!!! These were rock heroes!! Thank you.
Gives me goosebumps
HOw marvellous! Truly lovely music!
It's just bloody magical. How good are they😲😲😲
omg one of the best bands, playing one of the best songs, on one of the best albums, and I was lucky enough to see them live , many, many times. I STILL can feel the power of their music from a concert in the 80's.
Saw this tour in Bournemouth Pavillion. I was 16. Loved it then, still love it x
One of my all time favorite songs.
Musical PERFECTION !
Beyond Grandiose! Can't get enough of And you & I, a psychedelic progressive masterpiece, awesome lyrics, killer lead guitar and trippy synth, of course. I got Yessongs about 20 years ago.
I got goosebumps when Steve played the steel guitar on this song when I saw this tour. I just got them again.
Una de las mejores bandas de música progresista tocamos el cielo con su música.
YES..
Stunning piece of work
PERFECT SONG........WONDERFUL
Fantastic Band ! YES ✓ ♦️
{ You and I } !!!
Magical, mystical, never leaves me bored
Had the ultimate pleasure of seeing them at the sadly defunct rainbow on the 16th. Over 50 years on and many many attended gigs later this is still the stand out and most memorable of them all.
