Ricky Gervais & The After Life Cast Break Down Grief and Real Life Heartbreak
/ netflixuk
Although still mourning Lisa and struggling to turn over a new leaf, Tony shows compassion to his quirky little world.
Ricky is so underrated as an actor. He is so real and convincing when he plays this character Tony, you really believe that he’s actually going through this.
He's an infinitely better writer
Jm I just think that when everyone hears the name “Ricky Gervais” they automatically think comedy because that’s what he’s always done., but he’s certainly surprised me with Afterlife and Afterlife 2 .
I agree. I am blown away by him!!
Because I think he knew a Tony.
Janet Egan Wallace. 😆
This series is amazing. I don’t care what people say if they like it or not, it doesn’t matter. It’s Real, its heartbreaking and puts your heart together again.
Bravo!
I believe that, in time, After Life will be seen as a really important piece of work. Not just as a triumph for Ricky Gervais, but as a masterful description of human nature as applied to loss and grief. This will become compulsory viewing for students of life. Thank you for the gift that this series has given us all, Ricky.
I lost my wife to a Brain Tumour 7 years ago now, After Life is so close to all that we fill Thank you for making it , Life goes on as we say
This series has meant so much to me Ricky, it’s helped me tremendously, I lost my dear husband last August 2021, after 64 years marriage, he’s been my whole life, so now at 80 years old I have to find a new life, there’s such a void in my life now, that can never ever be filled without him, but from this I have realised just how many angels I have in my life, not with wings, but real people, a huge thank you 😊
God bless
I think this is Gervais at his finest, loved every episode, pure genius!
This show has managed to express much of what I was experiencing and still do experience these days. After loosing my son Sheldon in 1999 I couldn’t imagine being happy about anything ever again. But I have felt happiness again...it’s just a happiness coupled with a longing to share it with my beautiful son.
I am a Ricky Gervais super fan 😄 seen hours upon hours of him in all his series/ films yet I'm still blown away by the level of his acting, it's almost like hes not acting.. absolutely sublime 👌 in my opinion best on the planet!
Same.
He’s just been very lucky that every role he has had to play has been a middle aged man from Reading from a working class background. With that sort of luck I mean.......😑
That's because he wrote all the roles for himself I think after life is the best thing he has done especially the second series
We need more stuff like this that's real and connects with people. x
This is classic BRITISH humour, pulls you down to deepest darkest sad moments then pulls you back up kicking and screaming with laughter. Utterly brilliant!
the man is pure genius this is one of the best shows ever the writing is spot on and anyone can relate to it in one way or another
I've watched AfterLife2 three times now. I can't get enough.
I have seen it twice, each time I had to take breaks, its the most emotionally draining show I have ever seen
If this series doesn't get some accolades for the content and acting... then there is no justice... One of the most bitter sweet programmes ever. Its a joy and a heartbreak to watch. Absolute magic
Love, love, love this series. Made me cry so much. I just finished today. Thank you for making this brilliant gem, Ricky Gervais.
This cast is amazing and one can sense the pulse of family among them. For me Kerry Godliman (Lisa) and Penelope Wilton are the ultimate goddesses. One cant believe Kerry is anything other than this effervescent delight in real life. She rips one’s heat to shreds with her beautiful spontaneity. And Wilton always has an angelic energy.
Thank you to everyone involved in producing this masterpiece.
This show is really amazing, brilliant, raw, and powerful. The minute I laugh and the next minute I’ll be crying. It absolutely brings me a new perspective on life on how people grief and how differently people face and cope with their own problem. This show has me sobbing for like 30 minutes straight on the last episode and no other show that I’ve watched ever done that. Just brilliant.
“Happiness is so amazing, it doesn’t matter if it’s yours or not” that hit me
This show is wonderful it makes me laugh and cry at the same time!!
THIS SHOWS DESERVES THE WORLD!
At last something that deals with the catastrophe of Grief that never ends. Fantastic Ricky Gervais.
To be honest, this is one story that helps us connect with reality. We have people like Tony Sandy Lisa Pat Daphne all around us.Thanks to Ricky for making this
The scenes with Ann are incredible I love her advice to Tony and comfort, and then you realize that Ricky wrote the script, it’s mind blowing. I also love how much Tony cares for Sandy. Such a beautiful show that has helped me in so many ways
This is one of the best shows ever made. If u let it, it will help you heal from a loss in some magic way, through laughter and tears.
this is a masterpiece and ricky went up in my expectations 10 fold
captured grief which is a hard thing to portray .........
brilliant show
plus he loves dogs ...........fantastic man
Best series I've ever watched...truly amazing. Thank you Ricky for this masterpiece.
This show can not be topped and I do not want it to be! It is a treasure!
This is one of best series I’ve ever seen. It’s beautiful and real.
I think the sad part is, i would continue on in tony's mindseet if i was him. The happier ending that he had was such an uplifting ending. Gervais and the cast should be damn fucking proud of what theyve done here. ITs a beautiful mix between happy and sad, beautiful and haunting, the cynical and the positive. damn well done.
It's the smalls that break your heart- the little insignificant things that loom so large after someone you have loved so deeply leaves this world. Whats left of your heart is a shambles
I love you, Ricky. Thank you so much for making this series.
This show changed my life. It changed how I feel about the world, about life, about death, my interactions with other people. It’s absolutely brilliant and I have been telling everybody I know about it. I’ve never laughed and cried in equal measure watching the same thing before. It’s hysterically funny at times and heart wrenching and wonderful at other times. So so good. Gervais was a revelation in this show, and his supporting cast were also so amazing. Absolutely loved it!! ❤️❤️
Ricky Gervaise, he’s the “mate” we’d all like to have, in actual fact we all think he is our mate, that’s how close he makes us feel, you can’t help but like and admire him, a proper person.
seeing all the comments about how much this show has helped people dealing with the loss of a loved one is so touching🥺i really hope every single one of you is doing okay!❤️
After life is the best show I have ever seen. Great cast of actors portraying fantastic real characters. Every emotion is captured in each episode. Ricky created a masterpiece and what a fantastic actor he is. I just wanted to give Tony a hug. Well done to all involved in making this wonderful show.
Loss and grief is something we all go through or will go through at some point in our lives , we can all relate to it
It was just the best TV ever or for at least 50 years. I dont think Ricky thought it would have had this effect. Powerful but loving.... Pure magic. The best of British.
Ricky if you never do anything again it wont matter to me, you have made a series that will remain with me forever, totally sublime writing
I think the reason this is so successful is that Ricky Gervais is one of only a very limited few writers who can somehow make all of the pain palatable… somehow acceptable and honour it within each of us.
This series is actually in many ways therapy. But it crept in through the back stage door.
Sheer genius.
It really ought to shine ✨ when those BAFTA nominations start.
After life is the best thing I've seen on Netflix, Ricky is a genius
I loved After Life. I am a huge fan of Mr. Gervais.
I loved the series so much my wife and i laughed and cried and hugged each other so much ! Thats for the amazing story
Dosen't matter how many times I seen these scenes I still bawl my eyes out 🙈😭
And the next second you laughing your ass off 🥰
I was doubtful about watching this stuff, mostly because it wasn't rated well enough but I'm so glad that I came through because I just fell in love with the cast. It's the small things that matter and as it goes, life moves on.
You decide what to watch based on someone else's opinion of it...?
@@adambritain5774 Haha.. It's never "someone", is it? Don't you think you ought to know how people feel about a show before investing your time?
Akeeth Pinto you didn’t ask me but, I never tend to look into reviews too much. I feel like it can spoil the outlook, watching something yourself will show whether you like it or not!
Good one Ricky I’m 74 this year I very rarely spoke to my dad as I was poisoned by family that my dad was a wrongen and he was taken in to a cardiac ward but because I never had any respect for him I was out clubbing it not even giving my dad a thought he passed away that morning so I went to the hospital in the morning and my father was gone and I decided to look into my dads passed and I discovered my dad was a very hard working man to put food on the table for us kids and I remember he never raised his voice to us he hated bad language he’s been gon a few years now and I’ve never stopped grieving for my dad every day I grieve for my dad and I would love to tell him how very sorry I am and that I love you dad xxxxx
Absolutely an amazing series and Ricky and the full cast are amazing too
I truly love this series! It is the most real show on grief, a topic that is not addressed enough. Thank you, Ricky for this series! I look forward to Season 3!
!
Great to see 'Lisa' sitting there.
I just saw season 3 and i loved the entire season. Was sad when I come to the last episode. Loved it... sad it ended .... like grief.
I love this show so much.
Ricky is amazing as an actor an as person
Best Programme on tv ever, all 3 series brilliant
A very real take on grief, sprinkled with amazing moments of humanity and great laughs. Fantastic series!
After I watched this show together with my girlfriend I turned to her and said:' you're my angel, you know. You saved me.' And she looked at me and said:'and you are mine, you saved me too.' And then we hugged. This is what this show does to you.
Dear Ricky l lost my husband and my two sons lost a dad of cancer it’s nine years and we are still lost and never got any help your story touch our hearts you sounded like me and l can’t get over losing the love of my life you either can move on which is good to do or you can’t and that’s the painful one your heart is broken no one can repair it .we are left alone no one wanted to know after he died . What an actor - simply amazing ! Dark to light !
I came in expecting some fooling around and instead got something completely unexpected. I loved it... it made me really admire Ricky Gervais a lot more...
Everyone is fantastic in this masterpiece, but Ricky was so clever giving the lodestone speech of Season 3 to June! Jo Hartley does that speech to perfection.
Best serie on Netflix.
Done.
The cemetery talks with Anne is an amazing scene .
After Life is beautiful. I love it!
One of the best, if not ,the best series I have ever watched.
The ones who have suffered are the best therapists.
The series is outstanding. It makes me cry, it makes me laugh. And Ricky is brilliant as an actor and as a writer. Just brilliant.
Every emotion comes out of me when I watch Afterlife.
Can't wait to work with Ricky. ✌️❤️🎼
Very brave to tackle grief like never been done before
Very well done to you Ricky...beautifully portrayed of how it feels from every angle...all a process
Like you say most people got their own issues....at all levels
Cannot judge a book
He is soooo right....i lost my son suddenly in August 2021...heart attack and he was 37.......sick of hearing ...are you better??..wtf i'm not ill,i'm grieving so please bare with me.......this is the bestestestest therapy for me...
THANK YOU
I know Ricky's proudest achievement was the office, and I've spent so many hours of my life listening to xfm and the podcast, but after life will hold a special place in my heart for the rest of my life. I've always said Breaking Bad was my favourite show, but although this show isn't perfect, it means much more to me.
I just finished watching last night, I lost my dad August last year, this series has helped me in different small ways. Everyone was awesome in it, confused by the ending though
Honestly, i only know ricky as the host of award shows with his crude jokes. But after watching After life, my respect for Ricky Gerrvais as an actor, writer, director just increased by 10000%. Cos in asia we hardly watch british comedies. This show made me cry , laugh, happy and sad. Most of all, what i got from this show is that if we love someone, we have to love them deeply and treasure every moment with them
This and Derek are masterpieces. And to have The Office under your belt as well? Unreal.
Best show ever.❤️
Love After Life.
Best series...ever.
He said dogs have souls, it's a shame some humans dont, a few on here
Ricky gervais can do anything ! I’ve watched every episode of After Life at least 2 times , Derek, The Office, Extras .. the list goes on.. . He is an insane human . 🙌❤️
I think I agree. He has slowly grown on me. I think it takes time to see how brilliant he is.
Crying, again.
I never for the life of me thought i'd hear Ricky Gervais use the phrase 'soulmates' unironically.
Binged S1 twice within one week. Second one was a bit of a rewarming but very welcome. Just the therapist shots were worth an Emmy alone. That actor is something else.
This is a very healing show. I loved it after my 13 year-old son introduced me to it, knowing I don't do series/boxsets etc. But yeah, absolutely brilliantly written and performed. I'll be watching them all again in the near future. Thanks to everyone involved :-) :-)
Your 13 year old son is very special!
A VERY special series. Just watch it!!
So well written, touched my heart 💛
I must watch this series soon.
Masterpiece.
I got Netflix just to watch this show. It's amazing.
Just finished season 3....fantastic series...only gripe...each episode should've been at least 1 hour long !!!!
Best program ever made
Everything's beside.....
Sandy's Eyes were the most comfortable thing to look at, after all thise griefs
The best series loved it
That first series is fantastic.
I saw the first series trailer and it put me off cause I thought it would be all sad and I didn’t think it was something for me but a few months after I decided to watch it and I’m so glad I did I can’t wait for series 3
Ricky Genius!
I can’t understand how this series is so popular and surprised they allowed a second series I mean how long can you stand a person who is continually mourning over the death of his wife I mean in the real world this kind of person at work would drag his colleagues down with him after a while. They would for months try make him happy and to emotionally heal but there comes a point where they would feel stressed themselves to come to work. The HR department would ask him to take more leave or compassionate leave then advise on counselling/therapy. Although I can see what Ricky gervais is doing, he knows that people watching will put themselves in his shoes very clever to use the human emotion to guarantee a successful tv show.
Matt Newman greetings..you are so concise in your feelings...i know i get weary of someone’s constant depression..many of us go to work to get a little emotional boost in our day...all of us humans need balance just to make it through daily life...sending this to ❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦all who struggle..you may feel it but you’re not alone...someone somewhere is pushing just to exist...
I don't think I was ever such an arse as the character was portrayed after late ones death,it is somewhat hyperbole, but what it touched was how people deal with grief even if inwardly.I hated the world for a bit!! Didn't take it out on folks! Went to work, tried to be 'normal'But I thought the thing was all the peripheral characters were suffering and tried to help the main character, which is where the humanity of this series lies, and it's laugh out loud in parts. It also touched on the absurdity of life.it is just a fictional series after all but beautifully written and acted.😁
Wonder what his partner said after she saw season 2 ending where Ricky's character just breaks down in front of his wife's video. It was SO perfectly executed by Ricky that I love think that wasn't acting, it was real and it genuinely hurt...a lot.
It’s been a month and a week since my mom died it was me and her for 46 years I have no siblings I was her caretaker during her breast cancer she didn’t get a chance to do chemo the cancer was so advanced I believe she knew for years I was so angry at her at first but my mother lived life how she wanted to live and ended her life the way she wanted to end it she didn’t want to be a burden to me which she never would have been but that’s a mothers love I’m changed I’m a different person I don’t take life for granted I don’t worry about little petty things anymore.I miss my mom immensely I’m a little better than a month ago I’m terms of the intense crying and thoughts of suicide because my mom was a tough cookie and she would tell me to snap out of it and get your shit together I will never snap out of it but I hope to be able to laugh again
After life with Rick garvis good I like it
it made me think about stuff. and im thick f**k Ricky... love all your stuff, but this is top class on so many levels - not only comedy - kudos brother!
Kerry is just so good, right?
Top bloke !
this end an emotional and very funny movie, all the characters were so good... Kevin is insane , nasty , and hillarious! they should get Oscar's, I saw all the seasons and then moved on to DEREK" which wax great, with all the same characters!! im telling my family to watch it they won't be sorry
He knows all the good advices, he knows what happened and he knows how to get on with it! But the thing about love is u know everything about it but somehow doing what's right is like insulting to all of ur feelings and emotions u had for someone specific! It's like a huge promise you were keeping in ur heart and now is gone! But still u wanna be loyal to them...
