Excellent review Luke. We don't have this brand yet - to my knowledge - here in Australia. I have a BYD Atto 3 which I've had for two years. An amazing vehicle. No wonder they're so popular here. I look forward to looking around a Leap T03 when it arrives. EVs are selling in huge numbers in the Australian market. We have a huge solar array at home with battery back up and therefore, we'd be crazy not to have an EV. Thanks again.
This car was on show at the Paris Motor Show a couple of weeks ago at a price "around 26,000 euros", or around 20k euros after incentives... Somebody is making a massive profit here!
Looks like that €8000 price is due to Malta giving an Electric Vehicle Grant of €11,000 for electric cars and vans ( I had to Google it because I was surprised). I'm also wondering if the Paris show price was based on the original Chinese import that's going to attract a tariff whereas this model has recently started production at a Stillantis factory in Poland thus avoiding that Tariff
So the Maltese government is literally giving money to the Chinese government. That's why it's cheap. No, what we need is an eight grand car without the corruption.
Just to note (and not that you said this). The Maltese price post incentives is not a reflection on other countries in Europe where the price is about double even post incentives. Good video.
The three driving modes are all sensible, including the Sport mode. They don't make a significant difference in acceleration or top speed. Even in Eco mode, the car reaches 140 km/h according to the speedometer. However, the level of recuperation varies depending on the mode. Since recuperation can only be adjusted through the driving modes, the Sport mode is not pointless.
Good review, your English is on point, I have noticed the charming Maltese people seem to be great linguists. What an interesting little car and I believe if similar financial inducements existed elsewhere these cars would be selling like hotcakes.
The only work-around for the lack of a rear wiper is multiple applications of rain-ex. It's not going to completely solve the problem but it does make a positive difference. Apart from that, what an all-round super little car, I love it. Great review and much love to wonderful Malta! 👍
Just ordered one. I agree with everything. You forgot to mention that one other big factor for good range is the low weight of this car. It is nowhere near the other electrical 2 tonnes vehicles.
Umm no, according to a Nissan Leaf owner, he spent £107 over 7 years....that covered home charging, servicing/repairs....everything! So according to the Evangelists, you must be incorrect on the yearly cost!
The cost depends on where you are. £107 is very unreasonable over 7 years however. This person must be charging for free… electricity still has a cost..
The Spring is cheaper then the T03. Normal price for the tested version is 23000 Euros, Spring is 19900 Euros. With the same incentoves that Spring would be 6000 Euros brand new.
Thanks Luke, just discovered your channel and subscribed immediately. Well done! I live in Sliema (Malta for none islanders!) and would love to have an electric car. But I can't charge at home (the town is densely populated) and the only charging point I know is about 2 km away. Is there a Malta website that shows charging points based on location? Thanks
17:03: 🤔 My car is significantly shorter than that one and my arm fits all the way to the end of the boot, without lowering the seats. The way it does is by placing the petrol engine under the boot storage space. Gives about the same volume but very significantly more area.
Government in UK will find a way to charge you more. Would be ideal for many people . Problem with government is they always moving goalpost to get as much money as possible. Ps never used a rear wiper on any car I’ve owned if you can’t see through rear window go check your eyes.
When it comes to efficiency checking, I routinely would not take the car's instruments at face value. You really have to measure the kilometres, measure the KwH replaced, and do your own calculation. If you're using a public charger, you may not be able to trust the KwH figure delivered with sufficient accuracy either. You have to verify everything independently.
My calculations are never based on the range displayed on the dashboard. I use the known usable battery size and see the cars efficiency after I’ve reset the trip meter. If you’re implying the efficiency number is manipulated… then that’s another diesel gate waiting to happen.
@@brunoaisdo link such tests. That the range figure indicated isn’t exactly equivalent to the actual range I have no doubt of. However efficiency… I highly doubt this can be flawed

Insentives in Malta are not found anywhere else in Europe. So the car being around 26000 Euros, is not cheap. In fact it's very expensive for a bubble supermini
As a comparison My 2000 Mercedes A Class is the same size as this, has a flat floor more interior space and can seat 4 large adults in comfort. Probably not significantly less safe either. Is car design moving forward?
Surly a dacia spring comes in cheaper its 16k new bace price, and if you take thr 11k rebate your lookikg a 5k. Even if its coming in at 10k its a far better car than this.
I left UK 30 + yrs ago, back then the buyer was getting ripped off compared to main land europe, sounds like this is the norm today, sounds like the near future of still being ripped off with 'cheap' chinese cars.
Fact is a ICE car can run around all day, take five minutes to re-fuel then go again. An EV takes 10 Hours to fully charge, something you are not actually supposed to do, then it runs out with 20% of battery left, after about 100 - 200 miles, and another 10 hour wait. Keep your expensive milk floats/ golf carts. I'll stick with a diesel.
Actually it takes 6 second to charge the car. Because that’s how long it takes to plug it in. Because you charge it when YOU ARE NOT USING IT. Meanwhile you’re waiting at the gas station…
So, I checked the recommended maximum charge with my Honda. The manual says 100%. It charges in 5 hours on our home charger, and in about 30 minutes at a fast charger.
I'm sorry, just no. When the "incentives" amount to 50% of a car's value there is something very, very wrong. It'll be very interesting to see how long these things last. If they're not still going after at least 7 or 8 years, then really they're no better than the traditional cars they are replacing.
I agree the grant is a bit on the high end… and in fact is being reduced from 12k to 9k next year. Regarding your longevity comment. I started this channel because my family decided to give electric cars a go … 12 years ago… our currently oldest car is approaching 10 years, it still has 89% battery health… and everything else is fine.. Since then my family and friends EV count is now at 25 cars ;-)
@TheFutureisElectric Yeah that's fair enough, on earlier EVs where costs hadn't been pared down to the bone. As to whether this "price-engineered" car will perform as well - especially in the UK where the colder weather is much harder on the batteries - remains to be seen.
Oh and two more points as soon as electric cars become the majority road tax will be increased and the electric prices will rise great Britain. It's called greed
Don't forget the vehicle manufacturers for phasing out combustion engines. Can you blame them with over 2 million 2024 ICE vehicles world wide looking for buyers and the second hand car market on the floor.
In Italy, where I live, it lists at 18,900 Euros, with a 'Special Promo Price' of 17,900 Euros. Same old stupid, greedy, electric car story. Sorry, I am buying a FIAT Panda 'Hybrid''.......

So are you saying you'd like the UK to introduce the petrol/diesel scrapage scheme that Malta has for it's citizens (a bit like the Scottish scheme but on steroids), one that saves people's lives and improves quality of life by taking polluting cars off an island country's roads? If so I'm all for it, but other petrol heads seem to complain about EV incentives (despite their being none in the UK now) taking away their hard earned tax pound - even though it saves more money by reducing the stress on the NHS from pollution related illness and increasing lifespan and hence the tax take.
Get used to it mate, China now officially has the capacity to produce more than 50% of the worlds yearly car output! Those are factories which are up and running!
@@TheFutureisElectric When China was dumping steel under cost price all over the world, countries reacted too late and all domestic foundries all over the world went bankrupt. I disagree, these very small cars are almost useless. It will fit as much groceries as on my bike and the range is terrible, not to mention it's really only for 2 people, no people would want to be sitting in the back of that car and have no trunk space.
