    I finally figured out that there's method to Patti Deutsch's madness. She chooses zany, off-the-wall answers for both contestants in Round 1 - figuring it doesn't hurt anything to deny each of them 1 point, equally. but in Round 2 she answers seriously for both. (I've also seen her do this in tie-breakers - come through with the definitive answer.)

      Patti was quite brilliant actually and was way ahead of her time.

      That's funny I was just thinking the same thing regarding the way she answers. 😊

      Yes, there was some pressure from the producers to have the sixth seat "leave them laughing" with an amusing response because it's a bit boring to hear the same one or two answers repeated over and over. This was why they restricted that final position to a select few semi-regulars (mainly Fannie, Betty, Patti, Joyce, Marcia) who had the chops to pull off that seat. (They also put Mary Wickes there a couple of times, and in the past Jo Anne Worley and Kaye Stevens often held that spot).
      Also, I read a lot of comments about Patti (and other panelists) "costing the players money" with their "bad" answers. There's a lack of reasoning behind those comments. First, the winning contestant earns exactly the same $100 for winning 6 to 5 in the second tie-breaker as they do for winning 1 to 0 after the first two rounds, so failing to match Patti doesn't cost them anything. (They are of course, free to choose Patti or not for an audience match suggestion or head-to-head, so she doesn't "cost" them anything there either.)
      Further, if Patti (or any other panelist) never matches anyone (as if sometimes claimed), then it also costs no one anything, it just turns a 4-2 game, for example, into a 3-1 game.
      Finally, Patti has a droll sense of humor, but she's also quite sharp, and when the game is on the line, she either matches the contestant, or, when the contestant gives a rotten answer, Patti matches most of the rest of the panel.
      Also, she's only played the head-to-head twice so far, but she matched once. Granted, that's a tiny sample size, but I'm sure Richard would be delighted if he could match half of the time. Going into today's episode, he's matched 43.2% of all of his attempts, compared to Betty at 50.0% (!), Charles at 48.6%, and Fannie at 48.5%. Oh, and Brett, who everyone loves to say never matches anyone? She's matched 43.3% of her 71 head-to-head questions so far. Yes, a tad bit better than Richard! (Perception vs. reality.)

    H/H match update:
    ...
    ~~~Today's action:
    The challenger fails to score a single match in two rounds, and our champion easily wins a second shot at the Super-Match.
    *Today's audience match question: "Sweet and________"*
    (My thoughts: Sour, Salty, Tangy)
    The celebs: Patty (Sour), Richard (Low), Brett (Lovely)
    The choice: Sour
    The answers: Lovely, Low, Sour - Kudos to the panel who not only got them all, but offered them in the proper order from highest to lowest value!
    It's worth recalling that yesterday Patty also offered the $500 suggestion, but the champion went with Richard's answer and won $250 instead, and then went on to not match with Richard. I'm wondering if the champion might not choose Patty today? We're probably down to our next-to-last H/H of the week, and so far it's been all Richard. I'd really love to see Patty score her first H/H match (and George score his third)!
    Well, she did hem and haw. She seemed truly undecided. But Richard seems to have this magnetic pull when it comes to the head-to-head. He has literally been on the panel with FIVE other stars all with better or much better track records at matching, and he's still chosen every single time. Even after failing to match with certain champions repeated times in the past, those champions continued choosing him. The man's got charisma.
    Anyway, this is now King Richard's 41st consecutive H/H attempt. (No other celeb has played a head-to-head question since Fannie in 1132.)
    Stats: Richard has matched 142 of his 328 most recent attempts (43.3%), 81 of his last 188 attempts (43.1%), 34 of his past 80 attempts (42.5%), 20 of his past 53 attempts (37.7%), and 3 of his past 11 attempts (27.3%). His overall success rate is *42.2%* and this is his 806th attempt so far.
    For the sake of comparison: George Kennedy has matched 2 of his 2 attempts (100%), Patti Deutsch has matched 1 of her 2 attempts (50%), Charles has matched 34 of his 70 attempts (48.6%), Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%), and Richard has matched 340 of his 805 attempts (42.2%). Patty Duke Astin has answered two H/H questions so far without scoring a match yet.
    *Today's H/H question: "Blue________"*
    (I think Blue Moon is the most obvious, general answer. The Blue Boy is also a renowned painting by Thomas Gainsborough. Also, "Blueboy" was a sort of gay version of "Playboy" magazine, but I doubt the contestant or Richard would think of that. Blue Monday and Blue Grotto also come to mind, but I'll stick with Blue Moon.)
    Richard seems to already be writing when he glances over at Patti. He stops writing and looks for a moment, apparently at her suggestion(s). Whatever he sees doesn't seem to change his mind.
    Our new champion offers my alternate answer: "Boy." To say there was a smattering of applause would be to exaggerate the audience's reaction.
    I'm not surprised. Richard also chose "Moon."
    No H/H match today.
    ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.)
    (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts).
    Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts).
    Charles - 48.6% (34 wins in 70 attempts).
    Fannie - 48.5% (16 wins in 33 attempts).
    (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
    Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts). 42.25352%
    Richard - 42.2% (340 wins in 806 attempts). 42.18362%
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1169, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)

    Amazing how enduring some things are: They're talking about the musical "Hair" back in 1978 and I just saw a big stage production of it in 2023. I wouldn't be surprised if people are still seeing it on its 100th anniversary in 2068 (it debuted on Broadway in 1968).

    Richard is such an ass this week! Not sure why but very noticeable. He doesn’t smile much, his voice is very raspy. He is also smoking like a chimney during the week too!
    Richard starts wearing coat and tie on each episode from 1166-1221. Wonder if he is doing this because of Family Feud becoming a hit?

    • @crissrudd4554
      @crissrudd4554 5 років тому +3

      The next week 1171-1175 IMO is even worse. I think he smiles maybe once during that week. 1176-1180 is a tad better but only by a small margin. 1181-1185 he’s back to grumpy while 1186-1195 he livens up a smidge. Was he told that they would inevitably bring in the Star Wheel and this was his response?? Oddly he’s back to normal for most of 1196-1220. Did they give him a raise or something so he would at least change his tude??

    • @MatchGameProductions

      I’m not saying the contestant’s not attractive in her own way, but a lot of girls who knew they wouldn’t win would compete because it was a pretty reliable way to win a little scholarship money back then. Fannie Flagg was in the Miss Alabama pageant something like 6 or 7 times knowing full well her grades weren’t good enough to actually win but she could maybe get a runner up position and some scholarship money.
