- The Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban, South Africa with all its beauty and complexity has now become a financial maintenance burden for the eThekwini municipality
It’s currently undergoing structural repair which has so far cost the City about R60 million, according to mayor Mxolisi Kaunda
in 2006, while we were busy celebrating the fact that #SouthAfrica would host the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Seven major construction and engineering firms met secretly to also celebrate and allocate themselves tenders to build World Cup stadium projects, they even agreed on a 17.5% profit margin.
The story of the Moses Mabhida stadium falling apart is actually the story of the SA 2010 construction cartel..
The 2010 construction bid-rigging cartel was one of SA’s most extensive corporate criminal enterprise ever uncovered by the Competition Commission, it affected most major public works projects from all spheres of government as well as major private sector projects.
It also contributed and exacerbated the general environment of corruption in SA.
The corruption that these 15 companies & their international partners committed really changed everything, forever.

This was a great breakdown of the story but you left a couple of tasty morsels on the table about Moses Mabhida. Like the BIG multimillion Rand payoff for PG Mavundla when he sued the city for awarding the tender to a higher bidder with a lower BEE score. The court battles delayed the stadium drastically causing cost increases for an accelerated construction timetable. Similar events happened in Gqeberha. BTW Mavundla later became Deputy Mayor advised the city to sue the cartel.

This was an eye-opening piece. Didn't know it was such a deep mess. I'm from Uganda and I thought RSA didn't have such issues. I can imagine the corruption horror that will happen to Uganda when we co-host the 2027 AFCON with our neighboring countries. The way you unpacked the tender issuing of Constructing the stadium is really amazing. To me It kind of seems like the Eskom issues they are having lately if I'm not wrong. WHEN YOU BUILD SOMETHING WITHOUT THE RIGHT SUSTAINABILITY in the upcoming Years(+10Yrs) the issues will be seen and the one who is left with fixing those issues in present will be used as the Scapegoat.
I know it would need alot of research and time but May you please unpack the Eskom issue😂. A lot of People come with different answers but I need you to bring those different tap roots(E.g Cartels Being involved in crumbling Eskom; The government not resolving the issues Earlier; Some members of Government wanting to privatize energy as in their eyes they see it fit) into One

The speaker in Mbombela municipality (Jimmy Mohlala) was killed before he was to present evidence of corruption in building of the Mbombela stadium. Even Bobby Motaung (yes, that Bobby of Chiefs) was arrested for corruption related to this stadium. He and co had fraudulent tax certificates that enabled them to get a piece of the action. I think the decision of the NPA at that time was not to pursue the case as it would have been too expensive to prosecute.

We need to start talking about how state capture is a mirror image of what's happening in the private sector as well. Dishonesty and corruption are human traits that everyone is capable of whether you're a government official or a businessman. We need to urge people to be honest as much as they can. This video makes me feel like fixing government and state capture won't mean all these funny things go away. Everyone will need to be held accountable and expected to do what's best for our nation.
