Justin Long is a great character actor. Zach and Miri, Youth in revolt, Dodge ball, Die Hard 4 even the Superbad cop car extras are all great but versatile.

Robert De Niro struggled working with Joaquin Phoenix during joker. Niro demanded table readings but Phoenix doesn’t do table readings and they quarreled about that and Phoenix did it but was not paying attention and gave no fucks. Also Niro hated shooting the interview scene because of how many takes Phoenix improvised and required Niro to redo it like 100 times
I can understand Bruce's position; it's an action film with a lot of grueling shoots and he just wants to do the script and not ad-lib all day. Plus, they had been shooting for 4 months and maybe after 4 months of ad-libbing Bruce just wanted to do it as scripted. Mount Rushmore of ad-libs? Are there clips of Justin doing amazing ad-libs?
This makes finally sense Kevin not showing up to die hard 4 until very late. then later have Bruce in cop out not knowing how much of an ass Bruce could be.
I think Kevin may have misinterpreted that Willis was mislead into thinking they're going into the scene by script first. If you say we're going to do this and when it's go time you go off and do off path THAT'S annoying. Don't say we're doing the script, and then when Bruce Willis's head is deep into the scene, you go off script LOL, that's of course very frustrating. But if we already agreed okay let's do some ad-lib, now let's try something spontaneous away from the script, of course that's always great fun and should always be explored. But before "lights camera action" we have to agree where we're going first. Otherwise you're playing mind games with somebody else, and we're supposed to be on the same page Because you're supposed to be a team. I feel Kevin must have misinterpreted that. Or I could be totally wrong and Bruce Willis just had a bad week LOL
It seemed the scene where Justin ad lib'd was not with Bruce. I agree with you if two people are in the scene together and one doesn't know the other is going off script that would not be good.
People who complain about swearing are usually hiding something. It's overcompensation by hyper-focusing on a tiny detail and being overtly moral about it. Don't swear in front of kids or in formal situations. Apart from that, go wild. It's that simple.

So technically it didn't exist, but all the pieces to make it exist were already available to use. His cut of the film as a concept has always existed, but his cut of the film as a concrete thing available to watch didn't exist. But it's such a weird argument over semantics imo. It's like saying Matrix 4 doesn't exist. The only difference between Matrix 4 and Snyder's cut is that we've known Matrix 4 was coming officially for a long time. Snyder's cut wasn't announced until recently, but it still existed before that, just not in an official capacity. It was all very hush hush.
That would be a tough one for me to decide what was appropriate IF I was making a film that had some historic or personal significance, such as a life challenge, true story about relationships or a serious message... but that was a Die Hard film with Justin Long ad-libbing!!! I would want to hear what he offers.
Say what you will about Kevin Smith, but the fact that he, as a director, is able to LET the actor, ROLL with an adlib, and make it work within the story that's set up, and make it even better, or more interesting, and not get pissed off, or offended, but let them DO their craft, and enjoy it, and let it enhance their film, says mountains about him, as not just A director, but as a person in general. He does a lot of voice acting too. A lot of it I didn't notice because that's how versatile he can throw it. But is still doing some good stuff.
