It's movies like these that truly open our eyes to how priveleged and spoiled we can be, taking our bedrooms for granted. We forget how many people don't have them.

Totally agree. Her acting was what & how anyone would react that's grew up with a house or slept on a bed. That reaction was reality check & reminder how lucky she was & how there's so much less fortunate people out there like Mike has never even owned or enjoyed 1 simple thing in life - A BED.

We're not priveleged and we aren't spoiled. I had similar humble begginings just as Michael did, what I didn't have though was a society beating into my head that I was a victim of an oppressive system designed to hold me down. I worked very hard to to climb out of poverty and never stopped trying to make things better for myself and my family. Now I know there are going to be folks out there pushing the victimology slant, that only exists because you perpetuate it. Turn around that mindset and tell people you are responsible for your own condition and that nothing is out of your reach if you just work your butt off to achieve it and you'll get better results.

Such a good scene. After he said that and she left the room she sat down in her bedroom, full of elegant furniture, suddenly almost feeling uncomfortable, stiff, remorseful. The gravity of what she was giving him, something so normal to her, really hit her then.

As a foster parent, I can attest that there are indeed moments like this where you realize just how little some kids grow up with, and it breaks your heart. One little boy that we fostered for a while eventually got adopted by another family along with his baby sister, and on the day that we broke the news to him that he was leaving, the only question he had for us was, "Can I take the food with me?" We realized that our home was the first time he had ever been fed three meals a day and food was always available, and he never thought he would have it again. It was like gold to him. We had to reassure him that there would be lots of food where he was going.

Its different for me because every time I see my fridge full it makes me sad. My mom always tried to give us the best. She was not a failure and she did not choose to lose her self respect to provide. So now Im trying my hardest to work hard enough to one day not just fill my fridge, but fill hers and my other siblings. Theyre just too hard headed to let me help unless they know Im wealthy. So I cant ever really enjoy having things until I know my family has them too.

I had a similar experience to this movie. I went to high school and played ball with a kid who had next to nothing. His dad was in and out of jail, and his mom was apways on something. He had 2 brothers and a sister, and he was basically taking care of them. They were squatting in a house that had been last owned by a gentleman who had passed away 5 years prior. He and his siblings ended up trying to cook food for themselves on a mattress frame, over a fire on the floor, just to eat something, because their mom was out of town on a "drug run" they called it. She would do that and be gone for weeks at a time. It was terrible. We had just moved in to a house not far from where they lived, and so when my mom found out about that story from him while she was substitute teaching at my high school, we let them have one of the rooms in our house. We already had 6 people, and there are 5 rooms, so we did our best to ac ommodate the 4 of them, and it was like that for a month. Their grandparents ended up taking them in after their mom came to get them back because she had claimed we kidnapped them, then she was walking back home with them and we heard yelling. She hit the oldest in the head with one of those mag-light flashlights, after taking the other three back in the house, and so we heard that from him and called the cops. She lost custody, and they are now in a good home with their grandparents, and are doing well. We keep in touch with them, and occasionally see them when they pass through. Moral of the story is, there are a lot of people like the people this movie is based on, and we really do take a lot for granted. I was told my family were good people, because we extended a hand to them. I think we are horrible for complaining about anything when I think about what others go through. I graduated a year ahead of the oldest boy, Jason, and that was 3 years ago. He graduated and I heard he was in college at Tennessee Tech, studying business, though that was a "he-said-she-said" kind of thing, so I cannot verify credibility there. It's just wild to think that we often aren't worried about where we are going to put our head down to sleep, when there could be and are often people around us who haven't known where their next meal was going to come from.

It's his smile that kills me every time in this scene. That simple, child smile of happiness for a privilege so pedestrian that most of us never even give a passing thought to it. It also kind of angers me though, that in our country of such abundance there are still children who don't know what it is to have a roof over their head and a small safe space to call their own.

I think the best scene is actually the one where the husband notices that Michael hasn't eaten -- and then his teacher pulls him out of class to work with him on the test one-on-one. Two great examples of how just by paying a little attention you can have a great impact on a person's life. (BTW, I think Sandra Bullock's performance is amazing, as are the performances of the entire cast, but I most like the scenes where Michael--the character--is given a fair chance to figure things out for himself.)

One night we saw him at Walmart and he told us what happened. No hesitation he came to live with us for 2 years. He graduated high school and told us we gave him hope. We moved away and offered for him to stay with us and go to trade school. He declined. We where happy to help him

Great film, and great acting by Sandra Bullock!
I love the movie, and I’ve always liked her, apart from being a beautiful woman, she’s also a talented actress.
I saw a video on UA-cam, where she talks in front of an audience, about the fact she had googled herself, and found a lot of negative and abusive comments, from members of the public spreading hateful opinions about her!
Now at the end of the day, she’s just an ordinary person, with the same aspirations, hopes, fears, insecurities, and imperfections as anybody else; who just happens to be in the fortunate position to have been blessed with achieving success, and fame within the film industry.
She's not perfect, just like none of us are, however, what gives people who don’t even know her properly; the right to judge her, based on how she appears in the media, or how they make her appear?!
It’s very easy to judge others, especially on social media where it’s obviously not done face to face, because the person making the comments, is hiding behind a computer screen, or whichever technological means of communication they choose to use!
For me she’s acted in a lot of movies, the majority of which I liked, and this is probably, in my opinion her best role, for which she infact received an Oscar Academy Award!
Anyway, I love the movie, which is after all based on a true story, about a middle class, white, Christian family who take in a poor black kid, who is virtually homeless, and comes from a broken home.
He eventually goes on to get a high school, and college or university education, becoming an NFL star for the Baltimore Ravens!
I think Sandra Bullock’s portrayal of her character is brilliant, but also the whole cast, does a great job of telling this heart wrenching story!

We that are fortunate enough to be blessed with even those most basic necessities, a roof over our heads, clean clothes on our backs, food in our stomachs, the love of another living creature be it another human or a pet, are quick to forget that something as simple as a bed to us is everything to to someone else. Each day I am reminded of the blessings in my life. Although it my not be perfect, I am grateful for these things in my life. Remember, you may not where you want to be in life, but you could be in a lit worse place. Be thankful and feel blessed everyone.

Leanne was more concerned about how the bed would look in her house, fixated about it matching, but then Mike just slaps her in the face with reality, and puts life into perspective, hes just happy to have one. Why she was so compelled, its like she said ‘he’s changing my life’

The part where she walks to her room, closes her door, and looks like she's really hit by the moment where she feels that she takes for granted so much that she has when people aren't fortunate enough to have even the basic things in life like their own bed. That's just one if the moments that made me cry in this movie. Sandra was such an amazing actress in this film. Just the look alone at the 0:29 mark or a face speaks volumes of how she felt at that moment, let alone how she was so overwhelmed that she needed to go to her bedroom, close the door behind her and let it wash over her. Really makes you take stock of what you're blessed to have that some don't 😢.

The reason she had to quick leave the room and cry is because it hit her like a ton of bricks that this kid was born with literally nothing. Not even parents. She was born into her wealth and always had family who loved her. It's really sweet that they took him in and made him part of the family.

I have a dog because I want to have a dog in my life. I accept that I have to care in every way for him. I also accept that at some point, regardless of how well I take care of him, his life will expire. At that time I will be grateful that he graced me with his presence.
I can only hope for others to give my body back to the Earth as gently as I will give his.

She realised that every goods, property, luxury are for nothing. When she sits, camera shows Sandra with some expensive antique chair, desk etc. This is wonderful scene. She hates herself, regrets and ashamed of her life in this scene but these feelings will make her wonderful human.

Brilliant movie. Some people said that Sandra Bullock didn't deserve that Oscar. I don't agree. She was impressive and charming here. Quinton Aaron, Tim McGraw, Jae Head, Ray McKinnon were great as well. The whole film was very deep, personal, emotional & touching.
Just like "In Love and War" (1996), "A Time to Kill" (1996), "Hope Floats" (1998), "Crash" (2004), "The Lake House" (2006), this film proves that Sandra can act dramatic roles brilliantly well!
