- On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, it was a beautiful day with bright sunshine and gentle breezes. Taking advantage of this lovely day, the Markham Dynamic Wellness Seniors Club organized a joyful spring walk and free guided tour in historic Unionville district which attracted a group of seniors, as well as young Mom and lovely new born baby.
The purpose of this event was to help elderly individuals do not speak much English and have limited transportation options to step out of their homes and explore the historic and beautiful Unionville in Markham. The tour aimed to introduce them to Canadian culture, help them appreciate the beauty and history of their local environment, prevent feelings of loneliness, promote multiculturalism, and provide physical exercise through walking.
The event began with the organizer leading the group spent 1.5 hours walk around Toogood Pond and the surrounding woods. The seniors enjoyed the natural scenery, basked in the sunshine, and breathed in the fresh air. They chatted excitedly and took numerous photos, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere.
Following the nature walk, the group toured Main Street Unionville. They stopped to admire each beautiful and historic building, capturing many photographs. They also visited a coffee shop for a cup of coffee, actually feel the cultural ambiance of Unionville.
Several participants mentioned that despite living close to Unionville for many years, they had never had the opportunity to visit. Their children are often busy with work, and they themselves do not drive or know how to use public transportation. They expressed deep gratitude to the Markham Dynamic Wellness Seniors Club for organizing this outing and hoped for more such activities in the future, eager to share this experience with more friends.
This event is not only provided a delightful spring day for the seniors but also spread care and warmth throughout the community. Through such positive social activities, the seniors were able to step out of their homes, exercise, and enhance their sense of belonging to the community while promoting multicultural exchange. We look forward to more events like this in the future, ensuring that every senior feels the warmth and care of the community.
