Arch. Alcazaren played a very big role in transforming Iloilo into what it is today, from typical chaotic Philippine city to the most livable and benchmark city for all cities to emulate. You cannot mention Iloilo Esplanade and Iloilo City urban planning, without his name. Thank you, Arch. Alcazaren
Exactly... ❤❤❤❤❤
Iloilo should be a model for urban growth for Philippine setting, its a very liveable city
Mahinang nilalang mga Taga iloilo hehe
You should try to to develop the Iloilo Boulevard ( coastal area from San Pedro to Oton facing Guimaras ) a 3 lanes road each side with palm trees in the middle! This would be a great place for cruise ships to bring in more tourists in Iloilo!
And that's our mayor Vico Sotto. Proud Pasigueño here.
@@giochiong9750 still need cleaning ,too much garbage on the streets outside of "Ortigas CBD"
@@ks17onbecause keeping the masa, masa, is what keeps them in power
Depends on how they use them. You'd be surprised by how many LGUs actually hires urban planners. But for what purpose? Limited to writing for them their comprehensive plans. For compliance purposes.
Architect Paulo Alcazaren is such a delight in interviews. He is a visionary but sadly, politics and greed will always be a road block to progress.
In Singapore the sidewalks are getting bigger also drainages more dipper. The Center of the road or sides, that’s where they placed the cables, water pipes and gas pipes.
tru❤
You mean money
We need to change our standards for politicians! It's really unfair for us professionals. Senators and Congressmen should be a licensed atty and mayors and below should be at least in political science grad. I'm an Architect and I totally agree with everything sir said. In my city, the previous mayors didn't listened to the architects and urban planners so now that developers came in. Floods and traffic management are a bust. smh
just to save money for their pockets that why some politicians don't listen or even goes with the professional plans.
Excuse lang po...
Not fan ng mga professional with Law background.
What we need is a manager...Yan ang kailangan natin...
Yes every one who would be senators and congressmen should make sense. NOT JUST A FAMOUS PERSON carrying a family name, actors and police officers
personally believe polsci is one of the most useless grads. if you want economic policies get an economist. if you want urban planning get an architect.
Sana magkaroonng urban development sa center of Manila w/c is the Ermita / Malate areas, w/c was once the tourist belt during the 60s n 70s ....gawing more tourist friendly
Eto ang sensible na conversation. Napaka refreshing at at informative.
Refreshing, highly informative and thankfully not approached in a bashing manner. Enlightening. Thank you.
Iloilo river esplanade is the best. I went there a couple if months. Iba ang hatid ng esplanade sa tao. Alam mo yung nakakarelaks.. And pinqka importati sa buhay natin bilang tao is relax ang utak natin.
Kaya masasabi ko iloilo is the best regarding urban planning, the government plans to bring its people to a relax and feel comfortable life instead of luxury. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😮😮
I will visit again iloilo this march 2024.i really love this place
This interview summarized why it is difficult for our country to develop.
I have been waiting for a vlog such as this one. I'm a retired person, having lived abroad for more than half of my life. I now live in Cebu, and the tri-city area has seen tremendous growth in the last 30 years. But it was an uncontrolled growth. There was no zoning that you can speak of. It is sad that this tri-city area is one of the richest cities in the country and is located in the richest privince in the country but has the poorest road, water, and transportation infrastructure. You should come here and see it for yourself. The good people of Cebu deserve more!!
There is planning. The issue is politics. BRT took 30 years to implement. Was already fully funded and ready to go at least 10 years ago.
I support Duterte but his transporation secretary really screwed up here as the BRT was in stasis until after his administration. We are at least 10 years behind what it could be. Imagine Ayala Center Cebu to airport in 20 minutes in rush hour, we could have had that already.
we need more trees and open space Not concrete structures and buildings..
More trees less concrete
More parks less malls
@@dextershaman7154 hahahaha mas magaling daw engr eh sila nga yung dpwh ngayon tingnan mo anong nangyari? Lahat substandard, lahat panget, lahat di pinagisipan. Asan magaling don?

Great Information coming from this interview!!!
I enjoyed this episode. Yung requirements sa politiko totoong tooo. I still am hopeful for the Philippines.
May laws and regulations pero di sinusunod in all aspects.
We love BGC because of trees, walkable sidewalks. Pet friendly, Parks, Clean and safe
and dangerous crosswalks. Though to be fair is a Philippine standard anyway
But not transport friendly grabe traffic
Para sa'kin palpak parin ang BGC because di nila nilagay sa plano ang density ng in and out of vehicles dapat naglagay sila ng mass transport
@@joemango9782 Metro Manila Subway is coming!
BGC is like a suburb only in first world countries...I guess you've never been abroad
Urban Development without Taking into consideration the Breathing Space will not succeed!!-- This is where ILOILO SUCCEEDED!!❤
He knows history and thinks critical
when i went to iloilo, it does have that urban planning authority singapore vibe.
ang effect now iloilo with baguio and CDO are the wealthiest cities outside metro manila.
let's say it's Alcarazen design nauna lang ang SG kasi na employ muna siya don. it's not SG vibes. it's Alacarazen design.
This discussion was gold
sana kunin ulit sila ng iloilo more development.. at sana sabayan ng developer .
We need more shows like this. 😮
I wish our gov't could be better at planning, implementation all the way to maintenance. What a refreshing and informative convo.
This is very true! Sobrang barat ng actual field ng archi dito. Nakakalungkot talaga isipin.
Nice topic. Thank you!
Only 99k views? This needs more views. Manila is a hell to live in at its current state.
Great show, please keep it up👏👏👏
Thanks God pinag-uusapan na to sa Pilipinas. Metro Manila by and large is one of the worst areas in the world for pedestrians and motorists alike. It's a little late for most of Metro Manila, but it's never too late naman.
Tagaytay is also the same. One would expect it to be a good place for walking but it's a nightmare for pedestrians on the contrary.
when leaders have a slice in the pie of the car & oil industry, they will never allow walking.
why?? are we now out of the poor nation category?? I think not
the problem with Metro Manila is that it has no single government that manages it. Other capital cities or metropolitans of ASEAN have governor. That's why implementing laws differs in every cities. This give Metro Manila an inconsistent look in terms of planning, housing, traffic laws etc. There should be a unifying local government for the National Capital Region.
Metro Manila used to have a “Governor.”
Her name was First Lady Imelda Marcos, hehe.
@@Ryan_Christopher Yeah. Cory should've retained Metro Manila governor and replaced Imelda with someone else. But she completely abolished it.
If it's possible, I wish the whole Metro Manila would become CBD, developing previously occupied lands by illegal settlers to become world-class cities like BGC. That would be better and also will give a lot more office space for a lot of foreign companies that want to enter the Philippine market.
Wala kamong standards na sinusunod
how lucky Mr. Ollero is, he has the privilege to talk to these people, imagine how much knowledge you get just for talking with them
Transit- oriented development is the solution.
Never seen a property developer here in PH that prioritizes a transport or transit before building community.
When you go to Japan, train stations is well placed in the cities.
This is exactly my thought. They ponder too much on sidewalks, we only need sidewalks because of high vehicular traffic caused by lack of public transit infrastructures that connect Metro Manila as a whole. Investing in TODs are far more important which will result in less vehicles on the road like in Tokyo, allowing pedestrians to walk safely on the streets.
I wish this topic gets more talked about. Also, emergent urbanism. We’re very much lagging behind even our neighboring SEA countries. Hope people can be more involved with their surroundings too…enough with the corporate-led urban development, especially with roads and highways :/
Agree. You'll never realise how ugly philippines til you go to malaysia indo vietnam and thailand. Only thing we have right now are beaches
Dami Kong natutunan. Ty
1/3 of our cities is informal?? wow. This has been an enlightening discussion! Massive props to Architect Alcazaren 👏
More on topic like this please…
Very enlightening talks. There were great master plans pala since 1907 .. Unfortunately , Sadly, Terribly we have Politics in the PH.
The Philippines need to take its place as an economic powerhouse in Asia. The talent and intellect are there as shown by this guest. The dream will be realized if the will, discipline, and fortitude of the people push for it.
Ganda ng topic. Tinapos ko panuurin.
Hopeless na talaga ang Metro Manila. Mga mayors walang kaalam-alam sa urban planning. Tasteless sense of aesthetics.
Well newsflash, other Philippine cities are already heading in this direction (probably without the economic power of MM though).
Im not losing hope..
Mayor Joy Belmonte of QC seems to be one mayor who is prioritizing urban planning. We're also already seeing major roads being closed on Sundays for pedestrians, examples include Roxas Blvd, Ayala Ave, Tomas Morato, etc...
I like this content very informative. Thank you ❤
Conclusion: Phils is good in planning but, bad in implementation... in many aspects for that matter...
The real problem is corruption
Even if may plan, konting bayad lang or pananakot.. sira ang plan..
Bagsak tayo sa lahat
Transportation, energy ( hanggang ngayon coal pa rin tayo), urban planning
All because of the corruption.
Even if some people want to change it, they will kill or make up stories to destroy the name of those people
Urban Planning >>> DPWH Budget >>> Corruption >>> And the cycle goes on... lol
Still cannot envision that PH will be a 1st world country 200 years from now.
huh we are incompetent in everything because of our culture and laws
"Architect" nga eh, 😂
PURO "DRAWING"
lang!🤣🤣🤣
No planning and bad implementation, Baguio is a an example of no planning or poor planning.
True. People keep bringing up sidewalks, but Japan has a lot of streets without sidewalks.
Eh the reason why Japan, even with its lack of sidewalks, still has nice streets is still because of transit oriented development. If the main mode of transport is the train, or perhaps biking and walking, there is no need to buy a car and hence many small streets dont need to accomodate cars and usually see more walking or biking traffic.

This is really an eye opener, this really tackles how doomed we are in terms of long term planning and the political system, ngayon lang ako nakarinig ng metro governor na meron pala dapat ang NCR.
matagal na yan pinupush kasi it doesn't make sense to have different mayors when the cities are literally a crosswalk away. Pero as usual gahaman politics kaya never nangyayari. Dapat district counsellors nalang sila at isang mayor.
go abroad my friend!! there's no future here...this country is forever a sh*thole!
Mindanao has great potential to transform into a Philippine economic powerhouse. Regional development including master-planned urban development could bring that undeveloped part of the country at par with Southeast Asia's best urban, financial, and industrial centers because of readily available human and natural resources on the island and its relatively better weather (most areas of Mindanao experience significantly less disruptive typhoons compared to Luzon and Visayas), which promises of uninterrupted economic productivity the whole year round.
I really wish talaga maayos ang Manila in these aspects kasi ang gulo at pangit talaga outside of the business districts eh...
Iloilo esplanade is more on nature, mangrooves lanscaping etc., while pasig river esplande is more on concrete european walkways with lots of lightings
Im watching while doing master development plan of 4PH housing project. That turns me to widen the sidewalk, remove cut curbs and apply road dieting. :)
Marikina was once governed by a professional Engineer. He reclaimed the sidewalks of the city from encroaching residents.
naging color pink?
BGC is atypical. It's only possible due to the entire place being planned, developed, and most importantly, exclusively managed by private entity. Even public jeepneys, & buses are not allowed to operate within it's boundaries. Hawkers & sidewalk vendors aren't allowed unless they're vetted, & part of the BGC management's project. Same thing goes w/ Eastwood "city", & Ayala portion of Makati
There are jeepneys passing through BGC, usually from Guadalupe. Also, BGC Bus is crap-tier and that's what made BGC unpleasant, it's very inaccessible.
@ I only see those jeepneys plying along the katipunan, which is the along the boundary... looks kind of surreal - one side is well clean, maintained streets & bldgs, across the street is a complete opposite
@ "BGC....inaccessible" -- appears to be a widely practiced ploy to create a barrier to entry for less affluent people who can't afford a car, or a moped
@@kzm-cb5mr Reason why asceptic BGC does not have the organic feel of London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, or Toronto
@@andi_Lee Agree, the place feels bland and inauthentic for some reason. Made me appreciate the livelier areas of NCR including Manila. But some people also say it doesn't have character yet mainly because it's a relatively new place.
Urban planning should include building of train lines, bus rapid system, wider bicycle lanes and wider walk ways. We should get rid of our dependence with Jeepneys and tricycle which are unsafe and environmental hazards.
NCR needs an effective, efficient, affordable and sustainable mass transportation system.
Many people building homes, commercial buildings, and some government structures in the Philippines do not follow building standards. They often maximize their lot usage without setbacks or open spaces for greenery, prioritizing having that space for themselfs than having green areas. In contrast, Bonifacio Global City (BGC) prioritizes open spaces, greenery, and areas for socializing. It also enforces strict parking and traffic regulations and prohibits sidewalk vendors, ensuring an organized and pedestrian-friendly environment.

Take for instance yung mga CBD na nagsusulputan like BGC and MOA.
IMO the problem is that walkable areas here in the PH are only limited to these business areas when it should really be applied to all spaces of a city.
Filivest Alabang is better than BCG and Ayala kung side walk lng pag uusapan.
💯 agree. And hindi matao, which is a major factor in its desirability as an area or location to reside in. Filinvest Alabang is my place of comfort and serenity.
Great minds prefer to work abroad because of the good pay kasi dito walang kwenta.
Not sure kung alin may problema, Muntinlupa o Filinvest mismo. Drainage system for the whole land, wiring of electricity to be underground, proper highways, subways, and all.
either this or move all developments outside of metro manila. Maybe either down south (after starosa before calamba) or north - madami pa space dun compared to manila and with the expressways, di na ganun kalayo.

@ spending nga ang problema sa ngayon, so FOR NOW d kung what is available for disversement eh gamitin na para may simula, ayaw mo ba ng paskong malinis?d ba may sinabi din ako about flood control?

One big problem sa pamumuno sa atin is the lack of large scale long term planning and lack of continuity to follow through.
Even in our province we want to become the art center since we visual, digital and others are already starting and is near completion
Metro Manila should only have a SINGLE government (kinda like how Jakarta or Bangkok are - and BOTH are doing a much better job of running things than we are)! It is impossible to make things run smoothly for anything governance-related if there are so many fiefdoms to deal with!

Aside from Stanley, there are lots of beautiful pocket parks (small) in Vancouver unlike here in the Philippines you can count on your fingers the pocket parks! Really, no planning at all!
The stilt-design buildings in Singapore are used as parking spaces too!, not just as ventilation. I’ve seen these type of buildings here in the Philippine Army(Camp Aguinaldo).
