I hope this can be released to the public. I do recall the quasi-director's cut a few years back which restored a pretty long sequence to the middle of the film. Albert Pyun was, at least, an ambitious B-movie director who tried to deliver results above his budget.
Captain America 1990 is like Robocop 3, a great film trying to break out of a horrible movie. Good video explaining how executive meddling messed up things one more time.

I've watched maybe 10 of his films and every time I asked 'why don't I like this more?' because they all feel close to being good. It sounds like the director was originally for something akin to the first Highlander movie, where we’re introduced to the hero in the present and then gradually we learn about his origin and connection to the villain through flashbacks as the movie progresses.
I'm really glad I watched this video. I've always been a fan of his, even seeing these lesser cuts of his movies. This was an excellent video. The original opening feels so similar to the 2011 MCU Capt America movie. I wish I had caught this on the Mind Melter, so I really hope this Albert Pyun cut gets released soon.

I saw CA as a kid on TV and loved that movie, also a HUGE fan of Sword and Sorcerer and never knew about Albert or his work...read his Wikipedia page and saw he was an unsung artist...I hope he passed knowing his work was loved and appreciated. Now how on earth can fans get a viewing of the Pyun cut of CA??? You've got this fan wanting to see it!
I always thought there was something special about this film. Everyone else was laughing, but I thought it has a lot of good things in it! So this doesn't surprise me at all, but I'm happy to be finally vindicated.
Radioactive dreams was a movie I saw so young that when I tried to describe it to other people they thought I was making it up. I started to believe I did too.
I've always really liked both Captain America and Cyborg, even as they are. The visuals in the latter are amazing, and the former was (IMHO) the first 'real' Marvel superhero film. (I actually got to see it in the theaters in the Cleveland area, when it came out.) Before this film, all we had from Marvel live action was stuff like rope-web shooting Spider-Man sliding up a wall, Lou Ferrigno with some hammy actor pretending to be Thor in a really bad costume, or Cap himself riding 'his custom motorcycle' (which never existed in the comics). It would still be awhile before we finally got Blade, but I never considered that character 'classic' Marvel. Very excited to hear that Pyun had a different cut of Captain America. Would love to see that someday.
This is very informal, thank you for this breakdown of Albert ‘s original Captain America Cut,. Man.. this needs to be available to the fans.. same way Slinger was finally released, perhaps as a special two disc Blu-ray.
I saw the original one back when I was a kid. I liked it better than the cannon Punisher movie. I hope that this version of Captain America is released publicly someday.
I’m happy you are talking about that film. It had some good parts and the overall plot was very good for tv . I wish he had more control and a ability to cut loose with a bigger budget .love your passion !
I am legitimately more excited about this than another Superman film. Growing up in an odd time of live action superhero highs (Donner's Superman, Burton's Batman, Bixby Hulk), lows (Hammond Spider-Man, Dolph's Punisher), underrated (Baldwin's Shadow, Campbell's Rocketeer) and unreleased (Corman's Fantastic Four), I took what I could get. I have great fondness for this film and seeing a recut/extended version would be amazing. Also, great video!
I remember watching Captain America when I was 8, and I liked it . Even as an adult ,the theatrical version has so bad it's good quality to it . Seeing how producers and directors screwed over Albert Pyun and that Pyun got the blame for their misfortunes is heartbreaking . Pyun clearly had a passion for doing Captain America , and that passion should have been nurtured. Instead, production cut his legs out from under him with what they thought would make more money . Good video 👍
Ronny Cox once said it was the best script he ever read. I think some of the other cast also praised the script. I used to rent this movie all the time as a kid (have it on Blu-ray now). I really appreciate your enthusiasm!
I loved the cinéma from Albert Pyun, espacially Kickboxer 2 and Knigths. I have always seen some virtuosity in his filming. But, in the case of Captain america, it was a commercial purpose ! So, if a vision of Pyun would be better, I would love to see it !
I've been a Captain America fan since his cameo on Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends on Saturday morning cartoons. My brother, five years older than me, was a comics collector, and I read most of his stash and started collecting my own. I stopped collecting when the book went crazy and turned him into a werewolf, but I was excited when I saw this film at the local Blockbuster. I wanted to like it, and I didn't even mind the costume, I mean, he's a superhero, that's what they wear. I actually dislike the over-designed, heavily padded stuff they put out today. If you ask me, 1978s Superman costume is perfect. Frankly, I think studios just didn't have confidence in selling this character and making the kind of money that 1989's Batman did. If Paramount or Warner Bros gotten behind this film with a serious budget, who knows? Making the Red Skull Italian was dumb, even Germans, ESPECIALLY Germans today, will go along with the idea that Nazis were bad. But you know what? Even Captain America: The First Avenger went out of it's way to say, "he's not fighting Germans, he's fighting Hydra," so it's to be expected, you want every dollar, but you want every Euro, too. And Sallinger was okay, honestly, but again, with a bigger budget, maybe you cast a young Brad Pitt as Captain America and Max Von Sydow as The Red Skull, get a score by John WIlliams that's memorable, maybe even add Madona or Julia Roberts as a love interest, who knows? What I do know is, if you're going to bring him to the screen, you have to remember three things. 1) Cap is a man out of time. He has to adjust to the modern world without sacrificing his core beliefs, he's not a mindless tool of the government. He's been a conscientious objector, refused to obey orders from the president, and given up the shield to do what he thinks is right. 2) His fighting style is very MMA. He's a world-class athlete, a gymnast, he uses judo, and he's a tactician. 3) The shield isn't a prop. If you can't show him making it to go where he wants and do what he wants it to do like an expert playing billiards, don't even have it. I need to believe he did the geometry in his head to make it bounce off of three different objects before it hit a guy in the wrist so that he drops his weapon. Anyway, like I said, I'm a long-time fan. Sorry about the book.
I like that flash back cut technique it can also help regulate the pacing of the film. I could imagin just buy doing short flash backs would of made the movie so much better.
I remember seeing the poster for this film in the theater lobby, stating "next year" and being stoked that Cap was getting a theatrical film....then it never was released, WTF??? Saw it on video about 10--15 years later.
It was great. Would have loved more subsequent marvel movies to be more like this. The Italian setting and gangsters were cool, the red skull was creepy and threatening. Bit of cheese but it is a superhero film. It introduced me to Chopin's hauntingly beautiful, rain-drop prelude, which is used to trigger a memory of Red skull's childhood. More grounded with red skull's daughter and friends being cold blooded. Unsettling to see Sharon's mother be zipped up in a body bag. Great performances. Much more believable than the cgi filled, one liner formula of the mcu, Chris Evans version.
Yeah, his wife found the director's cut and will release it. So it is basically found media. Funny thing, how come nobody in their lost media videos ever mentioned about the original version of the movie? Maybe they just didn't know.
Yea, we are pretty sure a lot of it is from that and the movie BLOOD MATCH, but like I say, while not that exact music, it would be fairly similar in intent.
@@filmtrap Yeah don't get me wrong while Kickboxer 4 is an atrocious film one thing it does have going for it is the music as Tony Riparetti clearly always knows what he is doing when it comes to scoring films. If you read the Stan's soapbox columns from the time, he talked about how "we're going back to Romania to make it even more exciting. ". I didn't fall for it back then, I still love this movie and all of its crapulence
I never here about Albert Pyun, and this was a rly good introduction on him gonna look more about him, his filmography and, mostly, Radioactive Dreams, as a big Mad Max fan, that sounds awesome
I feel like Disney won't give enough of a shit about this to ever loosen their talons on it. Unless there is some wacky rights thing somewhere where they don't have to be involved I'm personally not holding my breath on this getting anything that resembles an offical release.
May I please have access to this edit of the film you sourced your clips from? I’m a major fan of this movie and can tell you a whole story about how it saved my life. Would greatly appreciate your help on this.
Would love to see this cut, but you've sold me on Pyun in general - going to have to track down some of those movies ASAP. It goes to show that it's not just talent but a lot of luck and a lot of support from the powers-that-be. I'm sure there's a universe out there where Pyun was able to parlay his passion and success into bigger and better things, where he was able to beat the odds and overcome that hurdle and get the support and budgets he deserved... but god bless him for grinding it out even when he didn't get that.
I’d be curious to check out this original cut considering how god-awful the theatrical cut of this is, it’s even worse than the Reb Brown Captain America movies from the 70’s which I didn’t think was possible.
This sounds alot like the Marvel comic adaptation that came out alongside the movie, I remember the gym scene you talked about in particular, so I might have to go and dig it out of the attic and have another read...
I feel like Albert got such a bad wrap but i have so much respect for him especially as Asian American, there are not many film makers i can readily look to as auteurs or visionary in their own way. It’s still so impressive what he was able to do. The executives and corporate side of film making didn’t understand him. He was a film geek and paved the way for so many other people like Kevin smith to have a career. I have no doubt that if he was coming up in the early 2000s we would see him directing films or even shorts in things like love death and robots. I am ordering your book because I’d love to learn more about Pyun and his work
I was also skeptical about this, mainly because it's known they just didn't have the money to shoot and I thought there couldn't be much more material to change the film. But it seems it is so. It's one of the higher profile Pyun films I like less, so it's nice to know that. Also, please, RADIOACTIVE DREAMS IN HIGH DEF, PLEASE. (Also, Knights, very underrated)
Yeah but if it wasn't for that theatre cut montage I'd have never heard of that Southside Johnny song which was never released anywhere else. I wish to god someone would would physically release that song.
I enjoy the movie and have seen it a lot, also have the 1990 movie on DVD. Not best film ever, cheesy but I love it. I want to see Matt as old Cap in a MCU film.
When I first saw this movie, I thought it was the best movie ever 😊 It was pretty good in my opinion. But now I think it's just an okay movie. It's not bad at all.
I loved this movie as a kid and of all the 80s and 90s era superhero movies it was actually the most true to the comics origin and appearance of the main hero and villain. And I frankly enjoyed the hitchhiking , on his own against everybody Cap. There are shades of it even in Winter Soldier.
Whoa! Who is this on my UA-cam recommendations talking about this cut? Justin just screened it! It's catching on like wildfire. Oh yeah, wait, this is Justin's channel. 😂
Intersting video... krass new informations for me, thank you. Got your book on my amazon list and will order it next month to check it out. Have a good holiday and christmas.
Every 5 years or so I try to like this movie, its not very memorable but it def had potential unlike the Lundgren Punisher which just keeps getting better every time I watch it!

@teaandtoys I thought it was actually sheep... or an extinct Scottish animal.
I agree, it isn't perfect. But it is an excellent suit, and I think I prefer it to the other on screen versions we have gotten over the years.
If it doesn't include Rogers faking car sickness to steal a car from an old man and again to abandon his girlfriend in Italy, I don't want to see it.

gonna look more about him, his filmography and, mostly, Radioactive Dreams, as a big Mad Max fan, that sounds awesome
Instant subscribe for this totally banger video. Thanks for teaching me about Albert.
I've never seen the original 1990 movie, so I truely hope this cut comes out one day. So I can watch CAPTAIN AMERICA for the first time.
I feel like Disney won't give enough of a shit about this to ever loosen their talons on it. Unless there is some wacky rights thing somewhere where they don't have to be involved I'm personally not holding my breath on this getting anything that resembles an offical release.
I need a copy of this film. Really hope they release this cut soon.
I only recently found out my favorite superhero film in the 90's was universally hated by everyone. Sad! I loved it.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen any of his films, but I always thought the vhs cover for Nemesis looked incredible. I always wanted to watch it
Pyun was in league with the Edgar Ulmers of the world, made films because he had too.
We ALL end up at Cannon at some point.
This was really awesome, thank you!!!
I am ordering your book because I’d love to learn more about Pyun and his work
Really want to see this Captin America Albert Pun cut now
Anyone has a link where I can watch it ?
I was also skeptical about this, mainly because it's known they just didn't have the money to shoot and I thought there couldn't be much more material to change the film. But it seems it is so. It's one of the higher profile Pyun films I like less, so it's nice to know that. Also, please, RADIOACTIVE DREAMS IN HIGH DEF, PLEASE. (Also, Knights, very underrated)
Thank you for this video. What an inspirational true story.
Yeah but if it wasn't for that theatre cut montage I'd have never heard of that Southside Johnny song which was never released anywhere else. I wish to god someone would would physically release that song.
can this cut be re relased? 😉😉
Yeah, I always thought it was good 😂👍🏿
I thought it was better that the first avenge 😂😂😂
As a comic fan, Im easy to please and easy to piss off haha...that said...I loved this movie front to back lol
I never even knew this existed!
I loved this movie as a kid and of all the 80s and 90s era superhero movies it was actually the most true to the comics origin and appearance of the main hero and villain. And I frankly enjoyed the hitchhiking , on his own against everybody Cap. There are shades of it even in Winter Soldier.
Could you cut the theatrical cut into more of the original cut ?
I always thought Captain America was an almost good film. Can’t wait to see the real version.
Whoa! Who is this on my UA-cam recommendations talking about this cut? Justin just screened it! It's catching on like wildfire. Oh yeah, wait, this is Justin's channel. 😂
How can I watch it?
Subscribed 👊🏻
Intersting video... krass new informations for me, thank you. Got your book on my amazon list and will order it next month to check it out.
Have a good holiday and christmas.
Hope Disney and Feige can give it a shot
Drugs are bad
Every 5 years or so I try to like this movie, its not very memorable but it def had potential unlike the Lundgren Punisher which just keeps getting better every time I watch it!
I've always had a soft spot for this film. It's not amazing but is really good in moments.
This needs to get released. I would buy it in a second.
We want to see this movie.
Thanks for reminding me of this film legend, much obliged.
Merry Christmas
