My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

Short & Sweet, with just the right amount of Great Info!
As the kids say, I'm loving it!
Awesome, thank you!
I know it's very tempting but don't take a blow nozzle to that stator. Shop air is very likely to blow debris (little metal bits) into the coils and that insulation is super thin. It's very easy to short out the windings. If you have to clean the stator use a vacuum and soft brush. Don't touch the vacuum to the stator and be gentle with the brush.
I used JB Weld on my Kohler magnets....seems to be working well
To clear things up, if the compass is reading "North" towards the center of the magnet, it is actually a "South" Pole on the magnet. Remember opposite poles attract. Like or similar poles repel. But the concept works for what you are doing since you alternating magnet polarity.
More great information!! Lucky the magnets were all ok and not busted up... along with the stator😁
It's a shame the kohler motors do that .
They used to be one of the best you could buy.
Bullet proof
I'm on my daughter's UA-cam. I had this happen to me on my 20 plus hp Kohler engine about 12 years ago. Before I removed the magnets from the stator I marked them. I completely clean the epoxy from the flywheel and magnets. It probably doesn't matter, but I wanted to make sure that the magnets were spaced evenly. I got a 5/16" brass rod so it wouldn't stick to the magnets. The 5/16" wasn't quite big enough when I test fitted it. The gap was too big between the last and first magnet. So I wrapped scotch tape around the brass rod about three times. That was too much when I test fitted it. I kept peeling just a little bit of tape until I got it right. I covered the backside of the first magnet with red thread locker. I made sure that the flywheel was positioned so the magnet was on the bottom of the flywheel that way the red thread locker wouldn't run away from the magnet and flywheel. Once that cured, I installed the brass rod and put red thread locker on the second magnet and install it and positioned the flywheel correctly. I waited for that to cure so that way the magnets wouldn't pull towards each other. It was long and tedious, but I was very happy with the result.
Sounds like I lucked out that when I bought my SCAG mower that it had a Kawasaki engine instead of the Kohler? Also, I smile when I see Bree's video intro of her when she was here in my hometown in Ky. sawing that big log with that big Husqvarna chain saw! I'll be right there where she was next week at the Farm machinery show!!!!
Love your work, you explain everything beautifully 👍
Excellent! Not many know those magnets can come off and they must go back in a certain order.
Thanks again Bre. It's little tid bits that can really help out. The weather is getting better here in Oklahoma. I bet that's true over there too. I'm getting ready for the spring. Mark
Gifted machines is one one of the perks of owning your own shop and this generosity helps make up for the disgruntled customers.
Good job Bree, I did that to a Polaris snowmobile engine and used the industrial yellow epoxy that I have used on damaged motor cycle cases and it worked good.
You don't even need a compass. Just get one magnet and see how it reacts with the other magnet. If it pushes away or is attracted just use the same magnet to test each of the other magnets and alternate them when putting back in.
My neighbor had a Gravely with a Kohler and it did the same thing that’s why when I got a zero turn I made sure it didn’t have a Kohler on it
Not a duct tape fix but close enough. Have to remember this one, as my 21 year old zero turn has a Kohler engine.
The old Tecumseh HH and OH motors are bad for this. I used a super thin layer of JB weld and light tensioned C clamps to re-glue the magnets. 12 yrs later and still going strong.
Thank You for your Great video of Information. You are an Awesome mechanic full of Experience that is passed on to the Viewing Audience that is followed you.
Keep On produciig Awesome Videos.👍👍
Bree it’s north south 😂😂😂😂😂 I love this chick ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ great content and it definitely helps.
I have experienced that issue, just dumb luck I found it, I decided I had nothing to lose, and went into the engine and when finally popped the flywheel, the adhesive had let go. Thanks for the video, always enjoy watching.
I have just such an engine. Your tip will certainly save me some money. Time and frustration, think that will stay the same. Good to know that this happens. Surprised the parts aren't all wrecked. Thanks. Good vids.
I used black silicone to hold the magnets back in place after I sanded the inside track of the flywheel.
That was a couple years ago and still good. I don't know if anything is a better glue. Mike
@@mtwseneca There are different grades of silicone RTV which have different levels of adhesion. The least-expensive ones stick the least. If you get up into the premium RTVs (such as Permatex Ultra Grey), the adhesion generally gets better. Read the labels. I did this job back in 1987 on my grandfather's AMF lawn tractor after it was in a flood. I didn't know about the N-S magnet orientation then but did use RTV and it appeared to work (at least for awhile, the tractor went away a few years later).
you never cease to amaze me , am just curious where did you get your training , you are obviously mechanical minded have a knack for mechanic things. great video as always . love your shows !
Would enjoy the solution, did you epoxy the magnets back in place? If this is the case what particular epoxy did you utilize…
Cheers.
...c'mon Bre....I wanna see you install the magnets and what kind of glue you use!.....luv the channel.....keep the
videos coming!... 🙂
I love repairing stuff like that to save money! I can’t count the amount of equipment ,or things, people have given me to fix for them or just give to me cause they were gonna junk it…..from washer/dryers to chainsaws and yard equipment …..my most recent find was a $1000 fairly new RC car that the owner put away wet….anything metal was rusted up…NOTHING would turn or roll….i did have to give $200 for it but still a good deal considering bearings are just $30, but it’s labor intensive …..but I don’t mind if I can save money 😊
Great video
That's a helluva tip. They must not have mixed the epoxy properly for them to fail all at once like that. I would use some JB weld
What do you use to stick these things back up?
I have reoriented the magnets in the flywheel before by butting them together to determine if they repel or a tract And then staggering accordingly
I had a B&S 31000-series engine in an Ariens rider that the magnets came loose from the flywheel and disintegrated, destroying the stator in the process. No known reason why it happened. When it first happened the engine was hard to turn over by hand and made a grinding sound and I thought the piston or crank was damaged. Turns out it was just all the magnet chunks under the flywheel. I cleaned them all out and for the next 6 years I kept the battery charged with a battery tender as a flywheel and stator were stupid expensive.
I doubt I will ever do this but what glue do you use?
Thanks always for your videos! I enjoy the channel a lot! Enjoy your day.
I have a old cast iron kohler 16 hp single cylinder to tear into. No current at the stator wires. Question if the magnets are trashed and NOT reusable, are new ones available ??? Luckily the battery is good and this engine is on a early 80's rider so the only draw on the battery once running is the ignition coil, have easily run it for 2 hours and still have enough juice left to crank the engine. Just running it like a plug in hybrid for now AKA plug it in after every use 😏;-)
I think the real crime here isn't that somebody couldn't afford the repair, its that the parts cost so darn much. Part of me gets it, but sometimes??? For example. I have a Dewalt Random Orbit Finish Sander I use ALL THE FREAKING TIME (HUNDREDS of hours). Well, actually it's about the 7th one. Why? Because the sanding pads wear out. They are 100% replaceable...but they cost MORE than a new sander does, with the EXACT SAME PAD. Yep. Last one I looked at a few years ago was $59. I can buy the sander for $49. Even my old high quality Porter Cable Finish Sander (when Porter Cable made quality tools) has a pad that costs $59. That one I do spend the money on, because that sander is a beast. It's old, but the darn thing is as good as any Festool for sure (again, back when Porter Cable made quality tools, and didn't sell out).
THIS is the problem. These companies do NOT want you to fix your equipment, they don't. They want you to buy new. I paid $149 for my Echo Weed Whip. Replacement speed head? $50 (local, not the Jungle Web site, or even on-line parts places). Carb Kit? $116 (but they send you a new sparkelator and air filter too). I mean, those two items cost more than what I paid for the entire unit...SHIPPED TO MY HOUSE. That is the real crime. Fact is, they do NOT want people to repair these units, they want you to buy new. Too bad we have become such a disposable society. :(
I had the same experience with printer ink. The ink cost to replace fully was MORE than the printer new! BS!
Funny you say that. Back many years ago Sam's club had a deal on some HP printers for like $49. They had to put a limit on the number purchased. Apparently people were trying to buy 20 and 30 of them...because that was cheaper, at the time, than a single ink cartridge was...of the 2 it used (which was something like $89 then). People were literally going in the parking lot, opening the printer box, grabbing the ink cartridges and tossing the printer, or leaving it in the cart in the parking lot.
I really wish there was something that could be done about (not just ink) but repair/replacement parts. Even my dishwasher that needed a basic seal...$59! A basic solenoid valve (literally a $10 item), $99. Spring kit for my clothes washer $499!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yea..$499 for 2 lid springs. So...yea, not doing that job. LOL...
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you so much!
Super job and excellent explanation....
I also believe that is what she said!
My husband thinks he's funny. 😂
The magnets polarity can be determined by placing them next to each other. some will attract some will resist. I’ve never had to pull an engine out just to remove the flywheel. 🤷🏻♂️
Great information never knew this
Great video, thanks for the tip about the magnets.
Hola, gracias por tus tutoriales. I really apretiate. 👍👍👍🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Thank you. Blessings to you.
That's a great tip.
I use the old style jb weld 😊
As usual, very good information. Thank You!!... Greetings from the Caribbean 🙂
If that's a magnetic pole indicator, yea that's North. If that's a compass, the compass' North is attracted to the magnet's SOUTH pole. Doesn't matter most of the time as long as they alternate, all is good. Once in a while though, when it needs to synchronize with something at the other end it WILL matter then.
Thank you
Well done Bre.
Do you use that ETHANOL SHIELD in you special cars, less driven? Have a 70 Ford that maybe one tank a year runs through it...
Thank you for all your videos. Made me much for confident pulling carbs apart.
Good advise Bre - thanks for the video. Stay safe.
Awesome video!!!
Thanks for the info. Great job.
Love your channel. Thanks for making it happen.
Thanks. Very helpful.
Bre, you are worth a million!
Just found your channel recently. I really like your videos. I see you are an Echo dealer. Who is your favorite manufacturer? My favorite is Echo. 😊
I believe that is what she said LOL!
Thanks Bree great job
Will I have a problem that's not to do with that. One of my blades is lower than the other and it is cutting my yard all messed up. Can you show a repair on a mower deck on a zero-turn. Possibly the shaft has slipped on that side
I would like to buy that one.
Thanks Bre.🇺🇲
Thanks for the videos
I have a echo pb 580t and it’s starts and runs great but it Boggs down at full throttle
What about the smaller b + s 3 horsepower ? Have a snowblower that came off only 2 magnets .
A bit of redundant information: It's actually so that if the North arrow of the compass points to the magnet, it points to the magnet's southpole and vice versa. But as long as they are alternately positioned it's quite uninteresting and of no consequence. :)
Hey Chickanic. I have had this problem where only a few magnets came off. How do you remove the others that are still attached without destroying them? Then re-glueing them all back on with fresh epoxy. Many thanks.
As always some good information
Thanks Mick!
Awesome.....
Seems to be a Kohler thing, sometimes the magnets get wrecked and the stator as well though.
Hey Bre! Good luck with the new shop! I was hoping you could help me with something. I have a Stihl MS180C (soft start) chainsaw that starts and runs perfectly. BUT, when first started I slide the black lever all the way down to "choke" and lock the trigger. After 1 or 2 pulls it sputters and I raise the black lever up to "run". Of course it starts, but at this point the trigger is still locked and it runs at full speed until I hopefully get to the trigger and release it! Running the saw at full speed (even for a few seconds) when cold can't be good for it, can it? I don't want to ruin it, but that's how I was instructed to start it when I bought it. Would it be better to release the trigger after the first sputter on "choke"? Thanks again for all your wonderful tips!
beautyfull video❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
where do you get the magnets?
👍👍
QUESTION FOR YOU,, CAN I USE A PIECE OF FOAM FOR THE AIR CLEANER ON A HOMELITE 330? CANT FIND ANY ANYWHERE
Good one. That’s what she said
Thanks beautiful
You are one smart cookie !!!
OK Chic,
Heres a question for you. My tiller has a fuel shut off valve. When you are going to store
it for the winter or longer the idea is to turn off the fuel & run all the fuel out of the carb. Gotcha. HOWEVER, with the carb innards dry, is there any rubber seals or what have you which might dry out become brittle and require replacement?
Curious in Cancun.
!
Think she says to fill/ prime with oil to store & them drain & flush well before use in one of her vids..
really enjoy the channel. I have a question? I have a craftsman pressure washer about a year old. it runs great but when I shut it off I always get a backfire. any suggestions as to what the problem might be?
Idle it down first ,it is not a backfire - it is an after fire in the exhaust (the reason most riders have a fuel shut off solenoid below the carb.
Looking good 👍😎✊
FLUX THE STATOR!!!
How?
I had a Lincoln Ranger welder it had the magnets come apart but it showed the stator up and caught on fire
Kohler was crap at 2 strokes too
Where are the magnetic poles, on the ends or the sides? It would appear to be on the sides.
Wow, what has happened to Kohler quality?!
What is the story with the comment on the whiteboard? "I believe that is what she said."
Never seen one with all the magnets still in tact, one falls off shattering others.
👍🤠✌️
China is #1
I was all set for you not to be here, you're still here.
I'm less than impressed that you didn't consider this repair good enough for the owner, if I'm recalling that video correctly, and would only sell him a new flywheel, because you didn't consider it a reliable enough repair.....but now that he gave you the unit, the cheap fix it plenty good enough for a unit that you are going to sell.
Thanks Chikanic, here is my quick tip of the day. Don't vote Democrat.
Bree, this is Greg Ritter. You never got back to me with a tracking number can you keep update me
