    I think a lot of people forget that some of us do things like this for fun and a challenge.... Added bonus for Marty ( and us ) is that he can earn a crust from the video ... of him and his mates having fun = ) As for the price... that`s entirely up to the owner and the eventual buyer.

      @JohnSmith-ud9ex Yes thats true but after a while you do get sick of people taking advantage of your skills and generosity especially in cases like this where they turn around and sell the thing for big money they would have had no hope of getting if it weren't for the skills and generosity of others ( if I sound jaded its because I have been used in this way meany meany times over the last 40 years). I hope Marty here at least got some UA-cam money from the vid especially since he went to the effort of making it for us to watch for free.

    • @JohnSmith-ud9ex
      @JohnSmith-ud9ex 2 місяці тому +7

      I`m in my 50`s... so jaded is a natural state. Thankfully I am, at last, learning not to waste energy on an insurmountable foe ( human nature in its natural state 99% of the time for 99% of people ). My comment was trying to be upbeat and appreciative of Marty. Besides, Marty`s comments on his second video regarding the state of the machine casts considerable doubt on the asking price and the owner has yet to find a buyer.... But you are right... unfortunately.@@-TheRealChris

    Running a 6-B at a DuPont plant pushing mud and the tracks were LOOSE! I told them it was going to sling one if they didn't do something. They said to run oit. Undercarriage was shot and slak adjusters were all the way out. It slung BOTH tracks and the winch on the 6 and several pther pieces pulled it back out. Welded 2 inch blocks in front of the slack adjusters to tighten the tracks back up. Had to break both tracks apart and weld the links together. The master pin was shot. GOOD JOB, Lads! CHEERS!

    For anybody considering buying this old Cat I wouldn't be concerned about the cylinder walls or ring seal, it fired up on all 4 from cold & didn't have one hanging or smoking & runs clean when up to temp. Marty's quick fix is basically the same way I fix these old track adjusters as well. I just do a clamp on style with a piece of pipe slit down the middle to go over the ram rod. These old D4's bring 6 to 10k any day of the week here in the US.

    • @super6954
      @super6954 2 місяці тому +9

      Exactly what I was thinking, it's the ideal machine for anybody like Marty with a bit of land, It wouldn't take long to earn your money back compared to hiring a machine in with trucking costs and a guy to run it if it's not self drive hire. Then when it pukes beyond economic repair weigh it in if scraps worth anything on an island like NZ, or part it out for what you can get out of it.
      I did the same thing here in Canada with my backhoe loader, I paid about 8K for it by the time I fixed it, earned all the money back the first year over hire costs, still own it, and might not use it for a year or do 5 things in a week with it. I've got a guy offered 10K for it, as it's the same machine he grew up running for his dad in the 80's. But I've got the same type of history to family ones in the UK like he does, so it's not for sale anyway.

      yeah that was my point. The owner must have thought they won the lottery! It was a hunk of scrap after it threw a track. Didn’t even bother to cap the exhaust. Would have cost more to transport it to a scrap yard than it was worth.
      They knew no commercial company would get it running by tinkering with the engine like these guys did.
      Really if the machine develops a new fault you’d hope the owner would call marty back and say you can have it this time! 🤞🏻

    It may be fine for pushing a bit of dirt around on a flat piece of land, also where you could get to it if it tosses a track or blows a hose. To make it reliable enough to make do in the bush it is going to take quite a bit of work.
    Even if it was gifted to you with an understanding that you would take care of the maintenance as long as the original owner could call on it a few times a year, it would be a bit of a burden. You would end up spending thousands and more than a few weeks of wrenching and cursing over broken knuckles.

      @@-TheRealChris I don't see a problem with it. Here in NZ a lot of places such as here are well off the beaten track, so everyone helps each other. Marty will get his payback, don't you worry. Instant rewards are not always a thing here.

    What you guys did was amazing.
    Isn't it funny how the owner reacted when that dozer was on the side of the hill - he was happy to just know it was there & do nothing.
    You come a long with a few mates get it going. Now he wants 10k for it. (has he been drinking?). Should he get any amount of money that he should split (I think it was 4 of you + him) 5 ways.

    while it does need some stuff, it's an old Caterpillar Dozer. old Cat's never die, they just go to sleep. seemed to run even after there was water in the engine. new tracks, and tensioner stuff and she's good for at least another 20 years

    Machine looks like it’s got some life left in it. Better to see it running at all than to be left to crumble into scale. Several of the drone shots of the dozer show the actual slope on the land really well.

    10K for a 500hr track life and low tension in one track, sounds like a money pit no thanks 😂 But seriously, that owner should pay you guys, for the time and effort. It took to put that BEAST back together again.

    There's surprisingly no smoke coming out of that stack while it's working, so I think y'all got really lucky with the water that was in that one cylinder...the tensioner repairs and track replacement required to keep it in service is a bit of a buzzkill, but to the right person that's a hell of a rig seeing as it seems to run really well and it has no trouble cutting and pushing...

    She's a worker! If the owner's got the tasks for her to do, it'd be in his interest to get all the over-due maintenance done to her. If not, he ought to let her go minus the maintenance price via, a couple itemized estimates.
    Great job Marty and comp!

    Just a quick comment for the algorithm. Hope your summer is going well, our seemingly never ending winter in the UK has been rain, wind & rain, rain & wind with the occasional of day of drizzle followed by more rain.
