- Here's a look at the olden days when TV stations were supposedly off the air after signing off for the night, here on WGN Channel 9.
(TECHNICAL NOTE: The reception for this recording was quite ghostly, as you can see, but we did the best transfer possible utilizing a time-base corrector.)

Sign-off with 1965 NAB Seal of Good Practice on screen and legalese (voiceover by George Bauer), followed by National Anthem with flag being lowered outside WGN-TV building
3:20 into clip, EIA color bars with tone come in, last to point 4:04 when Gaussian white noise kicks in
Then around 14:35, bars and tone return (takes a while to focus), and at 14:52 we hear "This is WGN-TV Channel 9, Chicago, testing" (voiceover by ??), and tone returns, continuing uninterrupted until picture scrambles around 17:58, and ~390 Hz tone is replaced by one an octave higher around 18:12 (unstable reception leads to fluctuation of tone in this period), then the lower tone returns around 18:20, and here and there the bars try to find their way through the static.
Bars come back again around 22:57, before disappearing again around 24:31; we then see black until 25:21 when the bars return yet again. This continues without any further incident until 1:08:31 when the uncredited engineer announces, "This has been WGN-TV Channel 9, Chicago, testing," and the bars and tone remain until 1:09:11 when it once again disappears into the white noise and screen static / snow.
Lastly, I included the end of the recording at 01:42:20, where the timer must have clicked off and the previous recording of a newscast on WLS Channel 7 resumes playing. (the complete footage for which, before the tape ran out, can be seen here: • WLS Channel 7 - Eyewit... )
This aired on local Chicago TV early Monday, April 23rd 1979 around the 3:20am to 5:03am timeframe.

So this is a glimpse of how WGN used their off-air downtime...very cool to witness the process of what the engineer in master control was doing here (I assume that's his voice on the TP). Also, it looks like 1979 was the last year that WGN was signing off because their "serving channel 9 viewers 24 hours a day" slogan would start the following year.

KTRK TV houston had a sign on and sign off prayer segment also that was called Meditations. Haven’t seen that in a very long time

@@hoarbaby This was done until the early 90s, actually. The video content was a little different between stations though, but it was there, so I knew!
I remember seeing this screen when I was young! I ALWAYS LOVED THAT SWEET SOUND!!! It sounds like the old EKG monitors, that sounded a single BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP, when the patients went into a cardiac arrest rhythm, such as Asystole. The Flat Line. When the patient was DEAD!! Great memories! You're talking about GREAT STUFF back then! I remember waking up at like 3:00 and watching this!

I was curious of what off air was one time my mom record it one time cause she thought it was a movie and I thought it was a TV show anyways she left it recording at night in the VCR. and the next day she noticed this it's like the white screen of death that appears at the end of VHS tapes but with colorful bars it was either in 2007 not sure but that's my story Ladies and gents😂!

When I was kids I walked downstairs to the bathroom and found dad sitting and watching this rainbow screen every night.
Until one day I realized…he just fall asleep and left the TV going.

Yep. I lived in a market that was home to two superstations, WOR and WPIX. I still got to watch WOR in Florida because of that, along with WGN and TBS.
@@johnfenner5550 WGN was a part of warner media but channel 9 has always been a local free channel but the other ones it owns are cable or satellite

in the 1980 sign in there's a cutoff version of the anthem with the chopper ascending to the right.
Excellent. Finally someone out there knows they must use a TBC to stabilize the video when the control track is gone.

I don't miss the scary loud sudden static that analog often had. Sometimes I would be watching a show and the station would suddenly get knocked off the air, then loud static would usually be what happened.

Can anyone say with certainty at what point WGN ditched their old-style circular test pattern for color bars?
I remember turning on the tv at 3am or so and one station was transmitting something that resembled an electric or gas meter (like what you have on the side of your house). Any ideas what that was?

Do you have something from the early 60s I'm pretty sure it was the broadcast station will resume programming at 7am? Then the 321 symbol with the Indian then bleep and after that static, I'm originally from Evergreen Park which is 1 block off of the Chicago border and of course like all teen's that leave home moved to Chicago and stayed in Illinois and still do. Was hoping that someone had it?

i used to live in a area in the UK where ghosting caused a poor picture from the TV Mast , but it wasn't as bad as the picture quality on this video, the FFC or the cable operator mustn't have cared about the picture quality,
It depended a lot upon where you lived. One location could have a perfect picture, and another not. Also weather, atmosphere and troposphere conditions could effect the picture a lot.

Why do the static look like if you're traveling from left to right going through space and the white area is like traveling through universes in micro light years and the black area are stars in the distance. The sound is the actual speed of the propulsion.
