One of my favs of all time. I saw Soft Machine March 1968 at Hunter College. They were 2nd on the bill with Jimi Hendrix. We had never heard of them. The first record was not even out. They opened with Hope For Happiness and did what turned out to be the whole of the 1st LP. By the time they finished their set, we thought Hendrix was doomed. How could he possibly follow them? They were all sitting down, no guitar player. Mike Ratlidge did things with his Lowrey organ the knee levers etc that were *insane*. Nevertheless, Jimi was even *more awesome"! I saw them 2 more times that year and then at the Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village 1972 with Hugh Hopper and Elton Dean. They basically did the entire Vol. 2 LP. Incredible. There were @ 20 people in the audience. Louden Wainwright lll was the support act.

I think Robert said that during their tour with Hendrix is where they really started playing all the songs together as the crowd at that time was not really there to see them. (pretty sure he was joking. For me Third is pure magic first two albums are the songs are wonderful. There is an early early video in colour mind you of Soft Machine and you get to see Mike Ratledge up close with his own Hendrix perm and light blue tint glasses. If I could be part of any band it would be soft machine

Thank you Dereck. Because of this video, you turned me onto Soft Machine and I am hooked big time. Back in the day, I listened to VDGG, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, etc., but fell into a bad habit of just recycling my music collection without venturing out to new music. Saw your video on Soft Machine - started to research them and all I have to say is - THANKS!! Not only do I enjoy Soft Machine, I'm looking forward to seeing the current Soft Machine lineup this Fall in a small club in the Midwest. Thanks Dereck for the new ideas on bands and love your taste in music!

Soft Machine means the world to me. Volume Two was my introduction to the Canterbury scene and I haven't been the same since then.

The Softs hold a unique place in rock/jazz history, as they were the first such band to play at the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London in the 70s and up until then, the Proms was wholly a classical music festival.
I only caught them once at the Festival Hall in London and during the interval, they introduced their friend Ivor Cutler, who amused us during the interval with his verse, prose and lyrics while accompanying himself on his harmonium. (you could here a pin drop)
The Softs were also one of the few bands that could boast having Alan Holdsworth in their ranks (that's what I call credentials)
    My favourite album, Bundles.

I am listening to volume two, I can't believe after 50 years I still can't wait for the next note to try and figure out what the hell that means and then it comes to why are we sleeping and my headphones explode into my brain and bring the past back to me and Robert is standing right beside me singing in my ear such melancholy, why

@@dereckvon Loving your stuff, I was very fixated on the early stuff because I love Wyatt's drumming. I came across 7 and that's one heck of an album and encouraged me to listen to the later stuff as well. Saw them live last year, thought they might be too old to produce the goods, I was glad to be proven wrong. Have you ever been into Gong and the offshoot bands? If not try Camembert Electrique or Angel's Egg. They were connected to Soft Machine through Daevid Allen. 🙂

Heyo Dereck...you were definitely NOT on my mind when I mentioned that...I appreciate where you come from be it positive or negative...I'm not always in an upbeat positive frame of mind...as today I'm having a stressed out fucked up day dealing with the public/patients...and this is a day where I lose faith in humankind... but that will pass and tomorrow will bring something else to deal with....the human experience is the great equalizer...I'm right there with ya...Mark
