You left out one of the most interesting bits of the book. When team money’s anti-Rex device shorts out baselton tells them to freeze because “their vision is based on movement”. Team science meanwhile is watching through a camera Levine snuck into the nest earlier, Dr Malcom then explains that that theory was disproven and the reason it worked for Dr Grant in the first book/movie is because it just ate a goat and a person and wasn’t hunting anymore.chaos ensues. It honestly felt like Michael Crichton was unhappy about part of his legacy being based on inaccuracies and wanted to set the record straight in the bluntest way possible.
Huh. I don't get why you couldn't have just used a "that clone had a vision problem from gene splicing but that's not true for dinosaurs." Easier explanation and the one I use whenever people say, "But T-Rex had very good vision."

I think the book wins by an inch when comparing them. - Sarah was a better, cooler character - the action scenes (besides the trailer scene and the snagged round-up) were better - the theories of Gambler’s Ruin and ideas of extinction mingled with Chaos Theory was interesting (even if it did drone a little) - the raptor’s appearance in the story was much scarier and less of an afterthought - the trailer was actually used more in the book (this one’s just a peeve of mine, the trailer could’ve been iconic in the movie if they used it more, I loved that thing) - Biosyn and Dodgson as the villains was a better idea - the smaller group of human characters created a more isolated, less safe feel to it that’s closer to the first story’s approach - NO RAPTOR GYMNASTICS - the Carnotaurus scene Though that’s not to say that movie didn’t have its advantages: - the larger group of bad guys did lead to some cool scenes and made more sense - Roland Tembo was a cool character - the Rex in San Diego was kind of neat - John Hammond’s speech at the end is tear-jerking (especially in retrospective considering it was the actor’s last appearance in the series) - Eddie being a mix of Thorne and Carr was a good way to condense the hero group - more scenes that didn’t make it into the first movie from the first book - Ian not sidelined again - no additional kid character because Kelly on her own was fine in the movie and having another kid felt a little repetitive seeing as the first book had two kids I appreciate some of the changes made in the movie, but the book was better for me.
I agree. I can't believe that they totally missed their opportunity in bringing Dodgson back as villain. He was an antagonistic force in JP over shadowed by John Hammond and his desire to leave behind a legacy. If Dodgson's original actor didn't want to reprise his role, then they should've gotten someone else.
Nah man, the group of fully armed hinters will cool cars was a cool thing in the movie. In the book the supposedly "smart" guys going in a small group of 3 and 5, without any lethal weapons and trained professional shooters and with a minimal amount of equipment is plain stupid, especially with Ian, who had an experience with an island full of dinosaurs before
You guys forgot to mention the chameleon dinosaurs, which is one of the coolest things I've ever read when I was a kid. They were able to replicate the shadow from the chain link onto their skin.

Honestly, I had a sneaking suspicion that Roland remembered that but kept quiet about it, knowing that the T-Rex would show up thus he can claim his trophy.
You didnt mention the Carnotaurus’ that can become in visible with camouflage. Thats one of the highlights of the books. Its why fans were so pumped that the Indominus rex was part Carnotaurus and was able to camouflage.
One small mistake is Sarah and Dodson are under the shorted out electric vehicle not the Jeep. The Jeep was out of gas and destroyed in front of the worker convenience store.
From what I understand Jurassic Park the movie was such a huge success that they had to make a sequel, with or without Crichton, so he wrote his own sequel novel while David Koepp wrote a script for a film sequel, and then did more drafts that adapted stuff from the book but kept a lot of his own ideas from his original scripts. I do think that the movie's extended version which had more character stuff and the scenes that were sadly never filmed like the Petandon attack would have made it better, but it's still enjoyable for what it is. Also, apparently the scenes in San Diego with Dinosaurs on the mainland were supposed to be the third movie, which was already in place to be directed by Joe Johnston but Spielberg decided he really, really wanted to do the T-Rex rampage in city scenes so that's why the T-Rex scenes feel kinda tacked on.

The only dumb thing Eddie did on book was to bring the baby rex, had Levine told them to dispose it sooner than keeping it themselves it wouldnt happen. Also had Eddie didnt add last minute the circuit breakers on the car the team wouldnt have a ride way back to the boat.
Pretty sure Levine was and the Biosyn guys were the dumb ones in the book. Levine used a candy wrapper to determine which way the wind was going which caught the attention of a raptor leading to Eddie's death and essentially the raptors active pursuit the rest of the book. The Biosyn guys meanwhile, were reliant on a small device, with no back up plans nor prior research on the animals other than what was mentioned in the book (Don't move, which only worked on the rex on Nublar because of different eye DNA, frog eye DNA).

Storywise, I think the movie did a better job then the novel. The problem is that in the novel the protagonist and antagonist had little to no interaction on the island overly focused the science rather then the story. The only think I wish they kept in the movie was have Biosyn as the main Company antagonist instead of InGen to show that there was a real corporate war over the dinosaurs
Mario U I would have loved to see this take place too. John Hammond sending Team Science, Ludlow striking a deal with Dobson, whose in it for rebuilding Biosyn, leading Team Money to get the dinosaurs.
The film fails in every way and was just a headache to watch because every character who wasn't Ian Malcolm or poor Eddie Carr were either a jerk or an imbecile.
I liked the novel more just because the plot was more interesting - you're right about the protagonists and antagonists not interacting enough, but aside from that the science team had more to do than just "walk in the jungle and get continuously picked off" like they did in the movie. Obviously they'd have to cut the scientific expositing out of the book, same as they did with Jurassic Park, but plot-wise the book had a bunch of really cool setpieces that the movie didn't end up utilizing. Also, I like the scientists' detachment for the first half of the book: they actually act like biologists observing nature, up until the Rex attack. In the movie, they go to the island for "science", but then immediately jump to meddling in others' affairs by releasing the animals in the InGen camp, and then spend the rest of the movie being chased. I think this is one of the reasons why they sorta come off as bumbling idiots in the movie. At least in the books they were successfully observing these creatures for awhile.
+James Gardner I have finally managed to finish reading the second book. For me, I would not say that the movie was necessarily better than the book, but I do feel that the movie going in different directions from the book helped make the film better for what it was, in my opinion. These are just a bunch of random observations I had about the unique highlights/flaws of both the novel and book, if you are interested and have time to kill: 1.) Some of the most interesting parts of the novel for me involved the characters simply observing all the dinosaurs in their habitats, learning what went on behind the scenes with Ingen/BioSyn (and how it relates to the real-life industries), and having all the cerebral talks about evolution. I appreciated those parts in the book, but I am unsure of how much one could translate those parts into a film, which is a more visual medium and constrained by a three-act structure. Movies rely much more heavily on “show-don’t-tell”, and need to have a narrative where you can understand the characters, drama, themes, world-building, commentary, etc. just by watching what the characters do, how they interact, how the settings/action are visually portrayed, etc. Unless one was adapting the second novel more as a made-for-TV mocumentary (like Nigel Marvin’s “Prehistoric Park” or “Chased By Sea Monsters”) that takes place in the Jurassic Park universe, rather than a Hollywood blockbuster, then it would be difficult to fit those parts in a movie without it disrupting the pacing, parts needing to be cut out, etc. In that regard, novels have a natural advantage over movies, since the reader does not have to experience the story in one sitting and can have information directly told to him/her through the narration (which one cannot rely on as much in a movie, unless it is in a documentary-style). 2.) I actually really liked that Peter Ludlow’s group played the role of Dodgson’s gang in the novel instead. The fact that Ludlow wanted to capture the dinosaurs to present them in a park on the mainland raised the stakes significantly and allowed the film to have more of a third act for me. It allowed the film to present a scenario where protagonists/antagonists succeeding or failing had major consequences for the movie’s world and created more opportunities for the protagonists/antagonists characters to interact (like whether dinosaurs can now successfully be displayed around the world as regular zoo animals are, should a new accidentally created ecosystem be left alone for nature to sort out or have man step in, should Ingen legally have the rights to collect them as their property, what dangers will be possible if they break loose on the mainland, are people opposing Peter Ludlow in the wrong ways, etc.). While I thought the movie handled those additional themes in a flawed manner, I liked that those questions and possibilities were brought up, and it also allowed the T-Rex to feel like an actively involved fleshed-out character when Ludlow wanted to capture the baby. Dodgson’s involvement in the second novel felt like a rehash of Dennis Nedry collecting the embryos, only it is now relatively inconsequential, since Dennis Nedry’s plan drove him to sabotage the park and instigate the whole conflict, while the protagonists in the second novel were barely affected by Dodgson’s involvement. This issue I had with the second novel is similar to the issue I had with the JPIII movie, where the stakes feel much lower and the conflicts are mainly just centered around the characters getting off of dinosaur island. 3.) I currently have mixed feelings about how the movie made their composite characters. For instance, it made sense in the novel why Dr. Richard Levine would be a much more impulsive character who optimistically approaches the dinosaurs without caution, etc. He was never involved in any actual field work and when he finally realized that living non-avian dinosaurs actually existed, his excitement got the best of him and made him go off on a journey without pondering the dangers of such a wilderness. Now when the movie removed Levine’s character and gave some of his traits to Sarah Harding, it does seem odd in hindsight why this woman who has experience with dangerous wild animals would make such impulsive decisions (like accidentally stirring up the Stegosaurus herd), whereas her book counterpart felt more like a professional wildlife expert and field biologist who knew what she could and could not do. On the other hand, I do like some of the movie’s characterizations like how Eddie heroically does sacrificing his own life to save the protagonists from the T-Rexes. Roland Tembo was also a neat addition to me, who had an interesting personality/arc and seemed to incorporate some of Muldoon’s missing moments from the first book. 4.) One of the best qualities about there being so many Jurassic Park movie sequels is that the additional films can incorporate a lot of the sub-plots. lore, imagery, characterizations, commentary, dinosaurs, action set-pieces, etc. that were initially excluded from the first two movie adaptations. This compensated for a lot of the problems I initially (would have) had with the first two movies. For instance, the second movie excluded the part with the camouflaging Carnotaurus pair, but “Jurassic World” still managed to bring elements of that scene to life later, using the scene where the Indominus Rex can camouflage, so that exclusion in the second movie does not bother me. Also, while Isla Nublar does not get napalm bombed at the end of the first movie, Fallen Kingdom was able to introduce the volcanic eruption, which gave a similar vibe and was able to have its own new story centered around it. I actually think that the second novel could have been done more justice without even changing the second movie, by adding more of the second book’s elements to JPIII. For instance, maybe the discussions between Ian Malcolm and the other characters can be given to Alan Grant and those other characters in JPIII (since that movie focuses even more on the characters simply surviving on the island and what they observe). I think it would have been nice to even see the DX Prion sub-plot play a role in JPIII’s story, so that would not be a problem I have with the second movie, but rather some wasted potential of JPIII to include those parts. 5.) I always thought that making John Hammond into a more sympathetic and relatable character was one of the best changes that the first film made. By being able to have John Hammond return in the second one, that is naturally going to give me another bias towards the second film, since I liked the few short bits where his character does appear. Additionally, since John Hammond is alive and able to send our protagonists on the journey to Isla Sorna, rather than Levine getting lost as the catalyst, I found it at least understandable for Spielberg to switch up some of the character motivations, like Kelly having a personal connection to Ian Malcolm rather than Levine, as the motivation for her to stow away.
So... What you're saying by omission is that Lost World: Jurassic Park is in fact not loosely inspired by the 1925 silent classic The Lost World created by the team that would later create King Kong and the book that preceded it written by Sherlock creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, complete with scientists going to a long lost dinosaur land, being terrorized by a triceratops and even a dino monster rampage through a metropolitan city...? My mind has been opened. :)
My biggest issue from the book was Ian's willingness to go to the island. After just reading jurrasic park and him being basically dead, he wanted to be around they too easily. But the book also had the non educated raptors which was an interesting point.
Ian, Sarah and Nick must have gnarly grip stregnth. Hanging off a cliff for several minutes, clinging to a soaking wet rope while heavy machine falls by them and explodes beneath. Then after 3 adults who had been hanging on to said wet rope for a significant amount of time, they still have the grip, forearm, and core strength to climb 20 feet up the cliff side. Impressive. They must have been proponets of CrossFit. 🤮

I remember when Jurassic Park first hit the big screen everyone who had read the book complained about how much they left out. Then when The Lost World was put to film we complained how much they changed it. I enjoyed the movie for what it was (a simple pop-corn flick), but I do think the movie would have been a lot better if they had followed more closely to the book like the first film did.

Michael Crichton killed off Ian Malcolm due to infection in the first book while Spielberg kept him alive. In the second one Crichton placed Malcolm in a drug induced comma. Clearly both Spielberg and Crichton have different appreciation for Ian Malcolm.

@@laloisdone. sure, those are good valid points, but most people wont bring them up, in my opinion those flaws arent that big of a deal overall, i mean, every movie has some problems, JP 1 also has a plot hole (the cliff the T-Rex pushed the explorer simply appeared out of nowhere), Grant and Tim where kinda dumb not simply go around the tree when the explorer started to fall and a scene with the jeep passing by dinosaurs to get to the chopper would have added a lot to the finale
Fuel Fire Desire and what I meant by bad decisions is how the characters from The Lost World are WAY stupider than the ones in JP 1 and make WAY worse decisions for example how they consciously choose to go to the dinosaur infested island even though they know the dangers the dinosaurs pose!
Wow. Based on your description of the book, it's no wonder my mom hated the movie. Seriously, we had Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park three in the house. She must have felt seriously ripped off from the action scenes in the book.

Personally, I like the gymnastic scene - one of my reasons being, I also once took lessons. It's the closest we will get to someone punching a raptor in a movie. For now, that's been done in a video game (or two); but I'd love to see a fist fight with a raptor in a movie.
The Jurassic Park book does not open with the girl attacked by the compys, it opens with the spectacular prologue, the injured worker who is transferred to an emergency clinic in Costa Rica. In my opinion, the prologue is probably the best part of the whole book, I don't understand why many people on UA-cam overlook it.
I remember I was in middle school when the book came out and read it before the movie came out. I was really disappointed with how different the movie was from the book.
The book is way better. Also Ian Just has the best lines, am I right? "Ooh, ahh, that's how it always starts. Then later there's running and screaming."
From what I can remember of reading the novel the only thing the same in both film and novel is Malcolm saying "This is gonna be bad." when the T-rexes attack the trailer.
I wish the second film was a lot more like the novel. I've always wondered what happened to Dodgson after the first film. Considering how he hired Nedry to steal the dino embryos for him as well as hiring Nima as his backup plan in _Jurassic Park: The Game_ , you'd figured he would have at least made a comeback and tried again with ripping InGen off of their creations.
Nah you have to realize that biosyn lost $750,000 when nedry died. After seeing what happened on isla sorna they pursued other methods of dinocreations. After the events of the lost world they bought ingen and began working on jurassic world, a little after the events of jp3. They just continued the name of ingen.
One of my favorite parts of the book was when the t rex sits on the car they're in and rubs his junk all over it! XD hahah totally wasn't what I was expecting! But later makes sense when they talked about the rexes having the territory during the day and the carnotaurous at night. :)
The Lost World is definitely my favorite movie of the entire franchise, the perfect sequel if you will. Like the first one, I also think the movie ended up being better than the book. I think the fact that it was an Ingen group vs a rival company picking up the scraps made the whole time on the island feel more grounded. The larger and better equipped Ingen harvest team and the small team science in the movie vs The small team money and small team science from the book shows a good contrast in their motivations. In their respective mediums, both make some sort of sense. But the movie's version feels like it has more weight behind it. Ludlow wants to succeed where Hammond failed and has an equally, if not crazier, vision than Hammond. Now, the endings. The book's was kind of........"oh it was all for nothing" for both sides, left me with a bad taste. The movie's ending with the added San Diego incident is just LEGENDARY and re-iterated the whole "You'll never be in control" theme from the first movie. Plus it was just such a cool sequence all together. The message of the movie's ending was also pretty solid. The dinosaurs survived and should be left untouched in their ecosystem and it also did set it up for any future sequels. The interactions between the teams also felt more coherent in the movie. In the books it's the now cliched "Ok, we'll work together but if I get the chance to betray you I will". Whereas the movie's is more, "Stick together and survive". I liked that. Like I said before though, in their respective mediums, both make sense. Gonna be honest I don't remember the dinosaur sequences too well from the book, only the Carnotaurus part where they camouflaged. The movie ones are fantastic though. The camp sabotage, the trailer scene, the raptors in the long grass and of course, San Diego were all super memorable.
Yes, I love the new film and this movie, I enjoyed the darker tone the film had, the wilder setting in both, and the new dinosaurs. Also despite complaining about the gymnastics bit, remember in the book a raptor finds the humans, because it ate a candy bar, and enjoyed it. PS. Really liked fallen kingdom, tie in second with TLW
Edaphosaurus meh Malcoms cut you from the team line makes me forget about the scene honestly. Also Malcom isn't a conservationist in this film meaning that point in your review makes no sense meh we all make mistakes.
(Predator) I think a really great suggestion to put on your guys radar is how extremely different the first predator movie is to its novelization. Spoiler: besides human character changes of race, open racism and the billy caracter in the book having full on magic psychic powers, the creature itself is radically different, its more like a shapeshifter killing out of curious scientific study, it can posess and control animal minds to scout for it, it can take on the form of animals, a tree i think, and even fully dissopait its molicules and float away in the breeze. Definately not at all like the vicious dred locked hunter strapped with blades in the movie. So different its bizarre! I would love to see yall make a video about it!
In the movie the people we are supposed to be rooting for are terrible terrible people that make things worse for everyone everywhere and are responsible for literally every death in the film while the people we're supposed to hate aren't the best people in the world yet somehow do more to keep people alive, even rescuing the terrible terrible people we're supposed to be rooting for after the Rex attack. In the book the obvious villains are obvious villains and our heroes are at least practical yet not terrible terrible people.

Sphere? They didn’t make a film adaptation of Sphere. Not with a spectacularly talented and almost entirely wasted cast. Or a brilliant but ill-suited director. And certainly not with a screenplay that wasted the massive potential for phenomenal set pieces and the type of tightly ratcheted tension that rarely lets up in the book. Nope. Definitely did not make an adaptation like that.

What's odd to me is we never get a timeline of what happened after the first novel in the second. Clearly, Malcolm has recovered, gotten back into his career and seems free to go wherever, despite the doctor in the 1st novel telling Grant none of them would be free for a very long time if ever, except very maybe the kids. Clearly, at some point after the 1st novel, all of them were let go otherwise Malcolm would not be so free he's able to go to Sorna without any authorities knowing.
We get a brief explanation that InGen had the survivors all sign NDAs in exchange for letting them go. Ian also stated that the company paid for all of his medical bills, so they probably incentivized the others with hush money as well.
Also please do ones for Ready Player one, Age of Ultron, Castle in the Sky and The Hobbit. This would be a great idea in my opinion and I would really appreciate it
First things first: Richard Levine was a frickin awesome character with great development and it was a mistake to not put him in the movie. My favorite part is when he’s following the tyrannosaur on his bicycle 😂😂 I never liked the movie much as a kid and still now, and didn’t expect much from the book. However, I will say that The Lost World book is every bit as good as the Jurassic Park book . I reread each of them several times. Also, since it wasn’t mentioned, Sarah Harding (waay cooler and more badass) was Malcolm’s ex-girlfriend but they were good friends. I was worried about a rekindled romance but thankfully that never happened. Wasn’t until Jurassic World that they started shoving unnecessary romances in our faces.
It was a neat scene that gave some pay-off to an earlier dialogue. I didn't find it all that offensive. My only real issues with The Lost World are its tendency to throw in unfunny jokes at inappropriate times (like the cheeseburger joke), and the dead ship crew (which I hear were originally to have been killed by Raptors on the ship, but got cut for time).
Hey, I LIKE The Lost World! To me it shows three extremes: Nick Van Owen, who wants to free all the dinos regardless of what happens as a result...Roland is at the opposite end, big game hunter...and at another extreme is Ludlow, Mr. Money who wants nothing more than a hefty profit. What ends up winning the day is the middle ground; not letting the dinos run amuck, but keeping them contained on the island.
qwertyMrJINX I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the same way about that scene. Could some of the jokes have been used better in the film? Perhaps? I looked at the jokes as being on the same level as the humor in the first film. There's two "Jurassic Park" UA-camrs named Klayton Fioriti and Terrordome3000. Both have put forth videos explaining the dead crew of the ship.

When team money’s anti-Rex device shorts out baselton tells them to freeze because “their vision is based on movement”. Team science meanwhile is watching through a camera Levine snuck into the nest earlier, Dr Malcom then explains that that theory was disproven and the reason it worked for Dr Grant in the first book/movie is because it just ate a goat and a person and wasn’t hunting anymore.chaos ensues.
It honestly felt like Michael Crichton was unhappy about part of his legacy being based on inaccuracies and wanted to set the record straight in the bluntest way possible.

Huh. I don't get why you couldn't have just used a "that clone had a vision problem from gene splicing but that's not true for dinosaurs." Easier explanation and the one I use whenever people say, "But T-Rex had very good vision."

Late to the party, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembered this.
I think the book wins by an inch when comparing them.
- Sarah was a better, cooler character
- the action scenes (besides the trailer scene and the snagged round-up) were better
- the theories of Gambler’s Ruin and ideas of extinction mingled with Chaos Theory was interesting (even if it did drone a little)
- the raptor’s appearance in the story was much scarier and less of an afterthought
- the trailer was actually used more in the book (this one’s just a peeve of mine, the trailer could’ve been iconic in the movie if they used it more, I loved that thing)
- Biosyn and Dodgson as the villains was a better idea
- the smaller group of human characters created a more isolated, less safe feel to it that’s closer to the first story’s approach
- NO RAPTOR GYMNASTICS
- the Carnotaurus scene
Though that’s not to say that movie didn’t have its advantages:
- the larger group of bad guys did lead to some cool scenes and made more sense
- Roland Tembo was a cool character
- the Rex in San Diego was kind of neat
- John Hammond’s speech at the end is tear-jerking (especially in retrospective considering it was the actor’s last appearance in the series)
- Eddie being a mix of Thorne and Carr was a good way to condense the hero group
- more scenes that didn’t make it into the first movie from the first book
- Ian not sidelined again
- no additional kid character because Kelly on her own was fine in the movie and having another kid felt a little repetitive seeing as the first book had two kids

I agree. I can't believe that they totally missed their opportunity in bringing Dodgson back as villain. He was an antagonistic force in JP over shadowed by John Hammond and his desire to leave behind a legacy. If Dodgson's original actor didn't want to reprise his role, then they should've gotten someone else.
Agreed 100% The carno scenes are some of my favorite from the book and they're not in the movie. Truly a waste.
Nah man, the group of fully armed hinters will cool cars was a cool thing in the movie. In the book the supposedly "smart" guys going in a small group of 3 and 5, without any lethal weapons and trained professional shooters and with a minimal amount of equipment is plain stupid, especially with Ian, who had an experience with an island full of dinosaurs before
One thing that always bothered me in the book was that Ian had no reason to return and he was suddenly interested in dinosaurs for no reason

You guys forgot to mention the chameleon dinosaurs, which is one of the coolest things I've ever read when I was a kid. They were able to replicate the shadow from the chain link onto their skin.

You didnt mention the Carnotaurus’ that can become in visible with camouflage. Thats one of the highlights of the books. Its why fans were so pumped that the Indominus rex was part Carnotaurus and was able to camouflage.
One small mistake is Sarah and Dodson are under the shorted out electric vehicle not the Jeep. The Jeep was out of gas and destroyed in front of the worker convenience store.
From what I understand Jurassic Park the movie was such a huge success that they had to make a sequel, with or without Crichton, so he wrote his own sequel novel while David Koepp wrote a script for a film sequel, and then did more drafts that adapted stuff from the book but kept a lot of his own ideas from his original scripts. I do think that the movie's extended version which had more character stuff and the scenes that were sadly never filmed like the Petandon attack would have made it better, but it's still enjoyable for what it is. Also, apparently the scenes in San Diego with Dinosaurs on the mainland were supposed to be the third movie, which was already in place to be directed by Joe Johnston but Spielberg decided he really, really wanted to do the T-Rex rampage in city scenes so that's why the T-Rex scenes feel kinda tacked on.
So in the book Eddie was the only dumb one but in the movie he was the only smart one.
Eddie died in the book because he was using an iron/aluminum rod to keep the raptors away while the kids and levine climbed to the roof of the high hide.

The only dumb thing Eddie did on book was to bring the baby rex, had Levine told them to dispose it sooner than keeping it themselves it wouldnt happen. Also had Eddie didnt add last minute the circuit breakers on the car the team wouldnt have a ride way back to the boat.
Pretty sure Levine was and the Biosyn guys were the dumb ones in the book. Levine used a candy wrapper to determine which way the wind was going which caught the attention of a raptor leading to Eddie's death and essentially the raptors active pursuit the rest of the book. The Biosyn guys meanwhile, were reliant on a small device, with no back up plans nor prior research on the animals other than what was mentioned in the book (Don't move, which only worked on the rex on Nublar because of different eye DNA, frog eye DNA).

Levine didn't go by himself, but he may as well have considering the guy who went with him dies immediately upon arriving.
Storywise, I think the movie did a better job then the novel. The problem is that in the novel the protagonist and antagonist had little to no interaction on the island overly focused the science rather then the story. The only think I wish they kept in the movie was have Biosyn as the main Company antagonist instead of InGen to show that there was a real corporate war over the dinosaurs
Mario U I would have loved to see this take place too. John Hammond sending Team Science, Ludlow striking a deal with Dobson, whose in it for rebuilding Biosyn, leading Team Money to get the dinosaurs.
Mario U the novel felt less like a novel and more like an excuse for Michael Crichton to drone on and on about evolution.
The film fails in every way and was just a headache to watch because every character who wasn't Ian Malcolm or poor Eddie Carr were either a jerk or an imbecile.
I liked the novel more just because the plot was more interesting - you're right about the protagonists and antagonists not interacting enough, but aside from that the science team had more to do than just "walk in the jungle and get continuously picked off" like they did in the movie. Obviously they'd have to cut the scientific expositing out of the book, same as they did with Jurassic Park, but plot-wise the book had a bunch of really cool setpieces that the movie didn't end up utilizing.
Also, I like the scientists' detachment for the first half of the book: they actually act like biologists observing nature, up until the Rex attack. In the movie, they go to the island for "science", but then immediately jump to meddling in others' affairs by releasing the animals in the InGen camp, and then spend the rest of the movie being chased. I think this is one of the reasons why they sorta come off as bumbling idiots in the movie. At least in the books they were successfully observing these creatures for awhile.

I have finally managed to finish reading the second book. For me, I would not say that the movie was necessarily better than the book, but I do feel that the movie going in different directions from the book helped make the film better for what it was, in my opinion.
These are just a bunch of random observations I had about the unique highlights/flaws of both the novel and book, if you are interested and have time to kill:
1.) Some of the most interesting parts of the novel for me involved the characters simply observing all the dinosaurs in their habitats, learning what went on behind the scenes with Ingen/BioSyn (and how it relates to the real-life industries), and having all the cerebral talks about evolution. I appreciated those parts in the book, but I am unsure of how much one could translate those parts into a film, which is a more visual medium and constrained by a three-act structure. Movies rely much more heavily on “show-don’t-tell”, and need to have a narrative where you can understand the characters, drama, themes, world-building, commentary, etc. just by watching what the characters do, how they interact, how the settings/action are visually portrayed, etc. Unless one was adapting the second novel more as a made-for-TV mocumentary (like Nigel Marvin’s “Prehistoric Park” or “Chased By Sea Monsters”) that takes place in the Jurassic Park universe, rather than a Hollywood blockbuster, then it would be difficult to fit those parts in a movie without it disrupting the pacing, parts needing to be cut out, etc. In that regard, novels have a natural advantage over movies, since the reader does not have to experience the story in one sitting and can have information directly told to him/her through the narration (which one cannot rely on as much in a movie, unless it is in a documentary-style).
2.) I actually really liked that Peter Ludlow’s group played the role of Dodgson’s gang in the novel instead. The fact that Ludlow wanted to capture the dinosaurs to present them in a park on the mainland raised the stakes significantly and allowed the film to have more of a third act for me. It allowed the film to present a scenario where protagonists/antagonists succeeding or failing had major consequences for the movie’s world and created more opportunities for the protagonists/antagonists characters to interact (like whether dinosaurs can now successfully be displayed around the world as regular zoo animals are, should a new accidentally created ecosystem be left alone for nature to sort out or have man step in, should Ingen legally have the rights to collect them as their property, what dangers will be possible if they break loose on the mainland, are people opposing Peter Ludlow in the wrong ways, etc.). While I thought the movie handled those additional themes in a flawed manner, I liked that those questions and possibilities were brought up, and it also allowed the T-Rex to feel like an actively involved fleshed-out character when Ludlow wanted to capture the baby. Dodgson’s involvement in the second novel felt like a rehash of Dennis Nedry collecting the embryos, only it is now relatively inconsequential, since Dennis Nedry’s plan drove him to sabotage the park and instigate the whole conflict, while the protagonists in the second novel were barely affected by Dodgson’s involvement. This issue I had with the second novel is similar to the issue I had with the JPIII movie, where the stakes feel much lower and the conflicts are mainly just centered around the characters getting off of dinosaur island.
3.) I currently have mixed feelings about how the movie made their composite characters. For instance, it made sense in the novel why Dr. Richard Levine would be a much more impulsive character who optimistically approaches the dinosaurs without caution, etc. He was never involved in any actual field work and when he finally realized that living non-avian dinosaurs actually existed, his excitement got the best of him and made him go off on a journey without pondering the dangers of such a wilderness. Now when the movie removed Levine’s character and gave some of his traits to Sarah Harding, it does seem odd in hindsight why this woman who has experience with dangerous wild animals would make such impulsive decisions (like accidentally stirring up the Stegosaurus herd), whereas her book counterpart felt more like a professional wildlife expert and field biologist who knew what she could and could not do. On the other hand, I do like some of the movie’s characterizations like how Eddie heroically does sacrificing his own life to save the protagonists from the T-Rexes. Roland Tembo was also a neat addition to me, who had an interesting personality/arc and seemed to incorporate some of Muldoon’s missing moments from the first book.
4.) One of the best qualities about there being so many Jurassic Park movie sequels is that the additional films can incorporate a lot of the sub-plots. lore, imagery, characterizations, commentary, dinosaurs, action set-pieces, etc. that were initially excluded from the first two movie adaptations. This compensated for a lot of the problems I initially (would have) had with the first two movies. For instance, the second movie excluded the part with the camouflaging Carnotaurus pair, but “Jurassic World” still managed to bring elements of that scene to life later, using the scene where the Indominus Rex can camouflage, so that exclusion in the second movie does not bother me. Also, while Isla Nublar does not get napalm bombed at the end of the first movie, Fallen Kingdom was able to introduce the volcanic eruption, which gave a similar vibe and was able to have its own new story centered around it. I actually think that the second novel could have been done more justice without even changing the second movie, by adding more of the second book’s elements to JPIII. For instance, maybe the discussions between Ian Malcolm and the other characters can be given to Alan Grant and those other characters in JPIII (since that movie focuses even more on the characters simply surviving on the island and what they observe). I think it would have been nice to even see the DX Prion sub-plot play a role in JPIII’s story, so that would not be a problem I have with the second movie, but rather some wasted potential of JPIII to include those parts.
5.) I always thought that making John Hammond into a more sympathetic and relatable character was one of the best changes that the first film made. By being able to have John Hammond return in the second one, that is naturally going to give me another bias towards the second film, since I liked the few short bits where his character does appear. Additionally, since John Hammond is alive and able to send our protagonists on the journey to Isla Sorna, rather than Levine getting lost as the catalyst, I found it at least understandable for Spielberg to switch up some of the character motivations, like Kelly having a personal connection to Ian Malcolm rather than Levine, as the motivation for her to stow away.
The way they describe the book in this comparison does it no justice. It is almost 100% better than the movie.

My biggest issue from the book was Ian's willingness to go to the island. After just reading jurrasic park and him being basically dead, he wanted to be around they too easily. But the book also had the non educated raptors which was an interesting point.

Ian, Sarah and Nick must have gnarly grip stregnth. Hanging off a cliff for several minutes, clinging to a soaking wet rope while heavy machine falls by them and explodes beneath. Then after 3 adults who had been hanging on to said wet rope for a significant amount of time, they still have the grip, forearm, and core strength to climb 20 feet up the cliff side. Impressive. They must have been proponets of CrossFit. 🤮
Lost world is such an underrated film. I absolutely adore it. It deserves a higher score than Jurassic World on RT for sure imo.

I remember when Jurassic Park first hit the big screen everyone who had read the book complained about how much they left out. Then when The Lost World was put to film we complained how much they changed it. I enjoyed the movie for what it was (a simple pop-corn flick), but I do think the movie would have been a lot better if they had followed more closely to the book like the first film did.

In the second one Crichton placed Malcolm in a drug induced comma.
Clearly both Spielberg and Crichton have different appreciation for Ian Malcolm.

@@laloisdone. sure, those are good valid points, but most people wont bring them up, in my opinion those flaws arent that big of a deal overall, i mean, every movie has some problems, JP 1 also has a plot hole (the cliff the T-Rex pushed the explorer simply appeared out of nowhere), Grant and Tim where kinda dumb not simply go around the tree when the explorer started to fall and a scene with the jeep passing by dinosaurs to get to the chopper would have added a lot to the finale

Personally, I like the gymnastic scene - one of my reasons being, I also once took lessons. It's the closest we will get to someone punching a raptor in a movie. For now, that's been done in a video game (or two); but I'd love to see a fist fight with a raptor in a movie.
The Jurassic Park book does not open with the girl attacked by the compys, it opens with the spectacular prologue, the injured worker who is transferred to an emergency clinic in Costa Rica. In my opinion, the prologue is probably the best part of the whole book, I don't understand why many people on UA-cam overlook it.

I wish the second film was a lot more like the novel. I've always wondered what happened to Dodgson after the first film. Considering how he hired Nedry to steal the dino embryos for him as well as hiring Nima as his backup plan in _Jurassic Park: The Game_ , you'd figured he would have at least made a comeback and tried again with ripping InGen off of their creations.
Nah you have to realize that biosyn lost $750,000 when nedry died. After seeing what happened on isla sorna they pursued other methods of dinocreations. After the events of the lost world they bought ingen and began working on jurassic world, a little after the events of jp3. They just continued the name of ingen.

One of my favorite parts of the book was when the t rex sits on the car they're in and rubs his junk all over it! XD hahah totally wasn't what I was expecting! But later makes sense when they talked about the rexes having the territory during the day and the carnotaurous at night. :)
The question I have is, are the characters in the book as self-rightous as their movie counterparts? Cause seriousy was a pain in the movie.
The Lost World is definitely my favorite movie of the entire franchise, the perfect sequel if you will. Like the first one, I also think the movie ended up being better than the book. I think the fact that it was an Ingen group vs a rival company picking up the scraps made the whole time on the island feel more grounded. The larger and better equipped Ingen harvest team and the small team science in the movie vs The small team money and small team science from the book shows a good contrast in their motivations. In their respective mediums, both make some sort of sense. But the movie's version feels like it has more weight behind it. Ludlow wants to succeed where Hammond failed and has an equally, if not crazier, vision than Hammond. Now, the endings. The book's was kind of........"oh it was all for nothing" for both sides, left me with a bad taste. The movie's ending with the added San Diego incident is just LEGENDARY and re-iterated the whole "You'll never be in control" theme from the first movie. Plus it was just such a cool sequence all together. The message of the movie's ending was also pretty solid. The dinosaurs survived and should be left untouched in their ecosystem and it also did set it up for any future sequels. The interactions between the teams also felt more coherent in the movie. In the books it's the now cliched "Ok, we'll work together but if I get the chance to betray you I will". Whereas the movie's is more, "Stick together and survive". I liked that. Like I said before though, in their respective mediums, both make sense. Gonna be honest I don't remember the dinosaur sequences too well from the book, only the Carnotaurus part where they camouflaged. The movie ones are fantastic though. The camp sabotage, the trailer scene, the raptors in the long grass and of course, San Diego were all super memorable.
Truth be told, I love the 1st novel and the 2nd movie best. The nasty cutthroat atmosphere and raging theropods are great stuff all around.
Yes, I love the new film and this movie, I enjoyed the darker tone the film had, the wilder setting in both, and the new dinosaurs. Also despite complaining about the gymnastics bit, remember in the book a raptor finds the humans, because it ate a candy bar, and enjoyed it.

Edaphosaurus meh Malcoms cut you from the team line makes me forget about the scene honestly. Also Malcom isn't a conservationist in this film meaning that point in your review makes no sense meh we all make mistakes.
To me Fallen Kingdom almost felt like a ripoff of The Lost World.

(Predator) I think a really great suggestion to put on your guys radar is how extremely different the first predator movie is to its novelization. Spoiler: besides human character changes of race, open racism and the billy caracter in the book having full on magic psychic powers, the creature itself is radically different, its more like a shapeshifter killing out of curious scientific study, it can posess and control animal minds to scout for it, it can take on the form of animals, a tree i think, and even fully dissopait its molicules and float away in the breeze.
Definately not at all like the vicious dred locked hunter strapped with blades in the movie. So different its bizarre! I would love to see yall make a video about it!

In the movie the people we are supposed to be rooting for are terrible terrible people that make things worse for everyone everywhere and are responsible for literally every death in the film while the people we're supposed to hate aren't the best people in the world yet somehow do more to keep people alive, even rescuing the terrible terrible people we're supposed to be rooting for after the Rex attack. In the book the obvious villains are obvious villains and our heroes are at least practical yet not terrible terrible people.

there was actually a legit scientist in a bbc special of like behind the scenes that tears apart the science behind jurassic park lol and you know how people were bitching about dinos with human dna making dino/human hybrids well this doctor legit said in order to fill in the gaps you have to know full thing to fill said gap should've used human dna.

Sphere? They didn’t make a film adaptation of Sphere. Not with a spectacularly talented and almost entirely wasted cast. Or a brilliant but ill-suited director. And certainly not with a screenplay that wasted the massive potential for phenomenal set pieces and the type of tightly ratcheted tension that rarely lets up in the book. Nope. Definitely did not make an adaptation like that.

What's odd to me is we never get a timeline of what happened after the first novel in the second. Clearly, Malcolm has recovered, gotten back into his career and seems free to go wherever, despite the doctor in the 1st novel telling Grant none of them would be free for a very long time if ever, except very maybe the kids.
Clearly, at some point after the 1st novel, all of them were let go otherwise Malcolm would not be so free he's able to go to Sorna without any authorities knowing.
We get a brief explanation that InGen had the survivors all sign NDAs in exchange for letting them go. Ian also stated that the company paid for all of his medical bills, so they probably incentivized the others with hush money as well.

I never liked the movie much as a kid and still now, and didn’t expect much from the book. However, I will say that The Lost World book is every bit as good as the Jurassic Park book . I reread each of them several times.
Also, since it wasn’t mentioned, Sarah Harding (waay cooler and more badass) was Malcolm’s ex-girlfriend but they were good friends. I was worried about a rekindled romance but thankfully that never happened. Wasn’t until Jurassic World that they started shoving unnecessary romances in our faces.

Am I the only one here who actually *liked* the scene in the "Lost World" film where Kelly high-kicked a raptor out of a window?
It was a neat scene that gave some pay-off to an earlier dialogue. I didn't find it all that offensive. My only real issues with The Lost World are its tendency to throw in unfunny jokes at inappropriate times (like the cheeseburger joke), and the dead ship crew (which I hear were originally to have been killed by Raptors on the ship, but got cut for time).
Hey, I LIKE The Lost World! To me it shows three extremes: Nick Van Owen, who wants to free all the dinos regardless of what happens as a result...Roland is at the opposite end, big game hunter...and at another extreme is Ludlow, Mr. Money who wants nothing more than a hefty profit. What ends up winning the day is the middle ground; not letting the dinos run amuck, but keeping them contained on the island.
qwertyMrJINX I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the same way about that scene. Could some of the jokes have been used better in the film? Perhaps? I looked at the jokes as being on the same level as the humor in the first film.
