Hi Sam , at 78 years old I grew up on the railway at truro with all my family working on them , I love the grange and castles ,, those being my favourites, as a boy I used to sneak into Truro engine shed and clean the brass work and get paid a tanner ( sixpence )by the maintainence men ) great days and great videos of yours , keep it up , regards Roy.
One of my favorite non-American steam locomotives has always been the 57xx pannier tank. Ergo, that's why Duck is my favorite Thomas character. There's a very...professional look about them. They look like they take great pride in their work, and they look good fulfilling said duties. And that really must have rubbed off on Wilbert Awdry himself, given Duck and his motto. "There are two ways of doing things: the Great Western way, or the wrong way."
As a certain pannier tank said, “there’s only two ways of doing things. The Great Western Way, and the Wrong way” Also loved the video. Great to see the GWR bois every now and then
During the 1930’s Charles Collet’s idea of the 2-8-2 wheel arrangement of the 7200 class was to rebuild 4200 & 5205’s with extended coal bunkers to give greater range in the South Wales Coalfield; Shedded at 86A Ebbw junction, 86G Pontypool Road, 86J Aberdare, 87D Swansea East Dock, Cardiff & Barry Area 88A. They were later deployed to other locations for iron ore & mineral trains on the region.
If I might choose my 5 favorites, they would be : King, Castle, Manor, Pannier and Saint class. Being a GWR lover myself, i was extatic to see this video coming and was not disappointed.
I really enjoyed this one Sam, the GWR built some magnificent locos at Swindon, and many different classes having interchangeable parts, making the whole system a very efficient one. A very impressive collection you've amassed there....Bob
What a Lovely selection, and what a delight. Our latest Hattons order had Large Prairies in it. O gauge as well!! Also Small Prairies are very sweet. Dukedog. City of Truro have seen both in action! Mogul. The Grange... Must get one of these. The one that does make me smile is the Larger County as the boiler is the same as Stanier put in his 8F. Useful as they use an 8F boiler in the New build County!! Castles are also Lovely. Thank you Sam. D&L.
I definitely want to see more of these! I remember your videos on engineers of the big four such as Stanier, Drummond and Gresley and I really enjoyed those. Oh also you are so close to 100k and its and absolute pleasure to be with you for the last 5 years
I've got a Hornby King George 1 with TTS sound - it's a favourite, and go-to engine for hauling any kind of coaches. I think it looks better in the flesh than it did in the video, wonderfully detailed, and the sound is the best of any of my TTS locos - great chuffing, and the long whistle is awesome. As you know, I'm hard to please, so this is definitely a recommendation!
Good evening Sam Lovely video to watch. Even as a dedicated modeller of diesels, I do count myself as a fan of the GWR. I model the Great Western mainline / West Country, just firmly in HST time rather than King Class... That being said my favourite GWR locomotive is the Castle. This is a combination of sentimental reasons and admiration. The late great John Peel once narrated a channel 4 series called “Great Trains”, one episode focussing on express services. In the episode it was explained how the Castle was sent for trials against the A1/3 from the LNER and totally blew it away. It’s said this experience led to Gresley re-working the A3s to produce much better performance. Stay well, keep the videos coming.
Hi Sam Also a fan of GWR and I have studied it in depth. I visited most of the Motive Power Depots before detruction in the 1950s and 1960s. I gained my steam ticket driving a Hall. My problem is that because of the successfull boiler standardisation when you create OO scale models the similarity becomes a problem and many models look extremely similar.
Hi Sam, There are quite a few 4-6-4 tanks bigger than the 72XX, biggest I can find with dimensions easily available is the L&YR Dreadnought Tank at 15.2m with the 72XX at 13.67m, although the LB&SCR L class /looks/ huge as well. 72XX is the biggest GWR tank though yes.
They certainly were an impressive bunch, variety is the spice of life, like em or loath em, worthy of praise any day. The King class and 4700 class always caught my eye, as did the 9400 Panniers. Nice collection, be proud of it! 🙂👍
12:30 The one tripping point for the hall class is that with a smaller firebox than a pacific, they needed good quality coal to get the most out of them. But that's a pretty minor detail.
Hi Sam have Hornby Holden tank from 1979 that I got in the Hornby branch line train set for Christmas. The locomotive still runs but it does get hot after running for a long time. So it comes out now and then for short runs, but it's great to have something from that long ago in the collection running. Great video always enjoy the content. Thanks Darryl in Ireland
Great video Sam I can’t wait to see you hit that big 100k ,been having a tough time recently and your videos always make me smile ,keep up the great work
My favourite railway company. The GWR did have other railway companies locomotives enter their fleet as there was a Terrier and one of those strange sentinel steam locomotives like the Dapol/model rail magazine produced.
The GWR is by far my favourite company from the Big Four, not just because I live in Swindon, but because it was the oldest company with the most history.
I love all of the GWR locomotives and tank engines, my personal favourite is the Small Prairie class. Great video Sam, cant wait to see you do the other railways.
Duck is stated to be a 57xx (despite his earliest illustrations resembling a 64xx) and is numbered 5741 in the RWS (though is still technically the NWR's #8). When appearing in show, he was a brighter shade of green like Percy and Henry, no separated black smokebox, less defined steps to either side of his face, and a black plate on his cab with a yellow 8 (likely to make it more obvious to kids that he's the 8th). As for Oliver, he had green wheels, and his 11 was yellow with red borders like most of the others and no black plate; his GWR number is 1436. For them in a full NWR style livery, I imagine: apple green, red boiler bands tank and bunker lining, yellow cab windows, yellow numbers at the middle of the tanks, green wheels, red running board. Percy has most of these apart from no bunker lining, brass dome, boiler bands on his saddle tank, and number on his bunker. I think those three are the only Westerners to work on Sodor. Lastly, for a Great Western Way joke, I'll link you to this: ua-cam.com/video/7wqqtQSzPL0/v-deo.html
Hi Sam. For me, the sexiest engine ever to run on British tracks is, without doubt, the 'City Of Truro'! There's something about engines with outside frames that make you stop and stare in awe, and the Truro has that effect on me. And for me, the frame has to be in its original Indian Red livery, while pulling a rake of those gorgeous chocolate & cream clerestory coaches. Heaven!
CITY OF TRURO :D GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY :D THOMAS AND FRIENDS :D This video made a bad day really good. Really hope you do a LNER, LMS and SR video, I love these videos.
Great video Sam, both my Grandad and Great Grandad worked for the GWR so naturally it's my favourite of the big four and features very heavily in my collection, most of them passed down to me from my late Grandad. I love the Castle and King classes and am 1 engine from having a full set of Kings.
Hi sam, i always forget to comment on those pieces of instrumental jazz that you play at the beggining of your videos. Great, as usual. My favourites the castle class. Keep on. Cheers!!
About the 72xx being the largest tank engine, There were 2-10-2 saddle tanks built for a logging railroad in the USA, and if you want to get technical about it, the Triplex 2-8-8-8-2s were tank engines, as there are drivers under the tender. Thanks, Lynne
You out of anybody deserves way more than 100k. You put so much work into modeling and you truly love the comunity, keep it up sam. I cannot wait to see smokey joe's new top speed :)
I love all steam. But being born in the South Wales valleys I can remember the last steam and first diesel. I wish I could remember seeing the 9f's as they hauled up our valley. The big tanks used to haul up our valley also. So for me it's GWR. Love them to bits.
Awesome video, love the GWR. I've only got 23 GWR locos: 2 hornby 8750s, 3 castles, a king, modified hall, 10xx county, bachmann manor, grange, 1361, 42xx, 5205, collett goods, city, bachmann 43xx, 30xx, 45xx, 4575, 56xx, bachmann 8750, 57xx, and a pocket rocket 101. On my list are a star, accurascale and dapol manors, dapol 43xx, 28xx/2884, night owl, 64xx, 94xx, maybe more london transport panniers, the GNSR pannier, 72xx, dean goods, 14xx (hornby, i think to match the level of detail on the airfix autocoach), maybe a half cab pannier and a 4-4-0 county, and a dukedog/earl. The 16xx is a bit expensive for me, as will the 15xx when it is released. Probably will end up with a newer castle and king at some point. I'm not a big fan of the large prairies, so one isn't really on my radar (I did have an ex-airfix one for a while, but it kept shorting). One thing I would love would be a model of the 80xx Cathedral class, the 2nd GWR class of pacifics (after The Great Bear) that was supposedly planned when Hawksworth took over, although the plans were halted early in the design process because of the war plus looming nationalisation and because the castles were a good enough design for most of the GWR expresses anyway. I've seen an excellent model of one as a converted LMS princess royal with a GWR tender, safety bonnet, and cylinders plus other mods.
Great I love to learn about the GWR and about all four railroads hope you make this in to a series. You are really helping with my education about British rail.
Not too long ago I learned the town next to me used to be served by the Great Western, which surprised me since I thought I was in Southern territory. Apparently they used to run the old 14xx autocoach services here, which were later replaced by the railcars, and finally with more standard BR diesels before the service was ultimately scrapped and the station turned into a car park with a hidden platform and rails in the bricks. The GWR was for a long time my favourite of the Big Four because of the green colour - and exposure. I've found SR is a little too..IDK, I can't appreciate them the same way. But as time goes on, I've found myself appreciating the pre-grouping railways just as much like the LSWR and L&YR.
Hi Sam my favorite of the big four is the great western. My favorite loco is your collection is great western and it is the Dean Goods from Oxford Rail
Well Sam, the only way is the Great Western Way. You probably shouldn't do a repeat of these videos because no other railway comes close to the GWR lol (I'm joking - I'd love to see more!). As for your remarks along the lines of "If you don't like the GWR, stop watching", I can't but heartily agree! Good on you for the King, although I think the Castle deserved a run too! Well done on nearly 100K! Regards, Dan
Hi Sam, nice video again. One of my favorite GWR express loco's must be the castle class. Big and fast loco's. Another loco which is not very well known, is the Night Owl , a big 2-8-0 loco. Only nine were built and not 1 left, but the Great Western Society are building the tenth loco from bits of other great western loco's. Would make a nice model I think.
Another great video mate, you make them fun and educational. My favourite is the mogul they were like a general purpose engine. Could be used on main and branch lines. Keep up the good work 👍
God's Wonderful Railway... What's not to like? Classy locomotives, stylish rolling stock, the best looking brake vans, prettiest clerestory coaches. I might be a bit biased?? Thanks Sam, great vid, you'll have to do it again when the Genesis coaches arrive!
Just an observation Sam at 3:28. ... The GWR 57XX class wasn't introduced until 1929. ... The Railway Children was set in 1905, so a big time span there !! ... The review was a good as ever.
WAAH! You ran City of Truro my beloved steamy daughter, but you didn't run Broome Manor! Don't forget City of Truro and Broome Manor are both favourite Great Western Tender Engines of mine. By the way, wailing like a baby aside, I noticed your green Standard 4 Tank Engine hiding behind the pub. What was that about? In any case, there are two new videos on my channel that I uploaded a few hours ago. Watch them to your hearts' content. One is R32 Gaming getting hit by Flying Scotsman in a Racing Car Game, and the other is me playing with my LEGO Steam Train (with a very familiar Christmas tune playing in the background).
Ahh sorry about that Kelly - hoping to have some more Manor action over the next few years when the new ones come out! Sounds good - I'll check out those videos! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks for another entertaining video. I used to run Great Western locos on my layout but I’ve swapped now to BR because like you said, they all looks the same. My favourite was the 0-6-0 Collett goods.
Top railway company - GWR. top class - Castle. Top engine - City oF Truro. Grew up in Cornwall in 50s -60s so can just remember these engines. Loved the style of them. Can just about recall riding in chocolate and cream coaches though they were replaced by BR liveries too soon for my liking.
The STEAM museum well worth a visit. As much for understanding how the GWR company operated - very forward thinking in many ways - as well as for its wonderful locomotives.
Very nice sam, enjoyed that, king class my favourite, still have to add one to my collection a little wary at the moment buying a new one as my luck lately with new locos isn't great lately 😂
Great video, please do the same for the other Big Four companies' locos, and maybe one comparing the Big Four's passenger coaches? Congrats in advance for 100k! Well deserved.
A great running session, with as usual useful info on the locos. Did you think about shoehorning the old Triang large prairie in as a GWR- "made up class" as Triang had a chassis with diddy wheels hanging about to use. I look forward to the next session, hint ,hint, Southern
For me the GWR has always been THE quintessential British railway company with great locomotives and the prettiest livery.
We are so unbelievably close to that 100k glad to be here for the past 4 years
Thanks so much for the support mate - really appreciate it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Ah very cool - always interesting to find things out like that! Yeah the livery is pretty epic isn't it?? :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
actually duck said once theres three ways: the great western way, the wrong way, and the thomas way
Hi Sam my favorite of the big four is the great western. My favorite loco is your collection is great western and it is the Dean Goods from Oxford Rail
As a newbie, seeing so many side by side was fascinating and informative, helping me develop my likes and dislikes. Thanks.
Some of those classes of locos do look nice Sam I really like the kings and the 14xx
Thx Ben :)
That’s definitely the Great Western way for sure! 😃👍
Thank you! Glad you thought so :3
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love the GWR so naturally I enjoyed this video :)
Love these trains. Congrats for soon hitting 100 subs.
Quite a show of GWR locos. Impressive!
SAM you are almost at 100k! 1k more to go!!!
Thanks so much - just 100 left to go amazingly!! :O
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thank you for correcting me
Just an observation Sam at 3:28. ... The GWR 57XX class wasn't introduced until 1929. ... The Railway Children was set in 1905, so a big time span there !! ... The review was a good as ever.
Well you have always raved about City of Truro but I do have a fondness for the Hall class.
Excellent video as always, yes definitely make more of these style videos, they’re fantastic 👍 Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks so much mate - sure thing, I'll look into doing more for the rest of the big 4! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
DUCK REFERENCE FROM THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE AND FRIENDS
"Theres two ways of doin things the Great Western way or the wrong way"
Can’t wait for the LNER and LMS video, excellent job once again my dude.
It is simply the Great Western Way Sam!
I agree! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
My favorite Great Western locomotive has to be the newer Saint Class, specifically 2999 Lady Of Legend. She's such a gracious engine
Mine is another GWS resident, 5051 Earl Bathurst
Awesome Andrew - thanks very much for sharing! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love great western engines, the Hall class is personal favourite, would recommend visiting the STEAM museum in Swindon 👌
