    Would love to see a sequel to this, where you run as a destroyer, and you can hunt each other in real time with the apps talking to each other.

    As more and more mechanics mix up with each other, boardgames will be more and more immersive. Just like we look at Stratego and Monopoly and Risk, UBoot shows what will come to us in the next decade. Forget eurogames, thematic games, ameritrash, wargames definitions. It will come all together in new kinds of fun and entertainment.

    A real U-boat couldn't keep the periscope up all the time, there would be too much chance of getting spotted. Typically the boat would take occasional short sightings to refine the targeting solution without having the scope detected.
    Now sonar, on the other hand...it would be nice if the app gave you continuous sonar updates when underwater because you could get those in a real U-boat. While giving orders while submerged near the enemy, the Captain would always be listening for reports from the sonar operator.

      the game does model this... iirc it's dangerous to use the periscope at distances less than 1000m (or something like that).

      It's called the hydrophone and is modeled in the game. This is the so called 'passive sonar' that does not send out sound waves, but allows you to listen to what's happening around.

    • @JimLederer
      @JimLederer 7 років тому

      Right...I was just wondering if it would be more realistic if the game would give you hydrophone updates continuously when underwater, which the 1st officer could read-out if they were important, rather than only when the Captain orders it. So, for example, you could be giving orders to change course to try to evade a destroyer, while all the time still getting hydrophone reports to see if your course changes are working. I think if the hydrophone works the way the periscope works in the app, once you gave a course change, you'd stop getting hydrophone reports until you gave another hydrophone order, so you'd have to keep spending two orders each time (hydro order, then course order, then hydro order, then course order, etc.). Not a big deal really.

      Yes, and the way the app stops giving you periscope reports when you give another order in the app makes sense, is what I was saying.

    Thanks for the runthrough! Not my kind of game, but I'm so happy i was able to get a different look at it. Keep up the great work!

    My god Rahdo you are amazing! Never thought you will manage to get this runthrough with only one hand. You are a hero of board gaming as the sailors of Uboats were heroes of the war. And the game looks amazing first kickstarter that i’m actually considering backing. It may be the next Space Alert of my group that is our favourite co-op at the moment.

    I'm curious about 2 players play about this game!! But I'm really sorry about that Jen cant play along with you this game and i respect her perspective. My patner has similar taste about games. And you are the suitable and helpful for buying boardgames. Thank you always:) Also, after i watch your reviews, my wallet is getting thinner.haha

    Thanks Rahdo. I am patiently waiting for my KS to arrive in March, with the mat. This should be awesome.

    Wow. Not many games leave this this conflicted. On one hand, I think it's the coolest app integration I've ever seen and as a cooperative sub simulation.... oooooh my... I want. But between the limited orders, the excessive micromanagement, bloated everything and the price tag I just can't see myself investing in it nor ever finding a (required) crew to play. But I am going to be thinking about this one for a long time.

      Ian Richard oh so there's no solo?

      From what it sounds like, they are simplifying some of the mechanics (Such as carrying around fire extinguishers and unique medical supplies) and giving you more app time for solo play, but all of the crew/ship stuff is still player controlled. It's still in the works, but I can't see my own brain handling a full crew and doing the navigation. Besides, the social role-playing seems like the best part that separates in from just playing a computer sim.

    Yes, it looks amazing - I will definitely take a closer look. Thank you, Rahdo, as always.

    Hi, thanks for sharing your thoughts! I consider bying the game, but I am conserned with Chief Engineer role. It seems to be way eaiser and simpler than others and breach repair mini game, which is the most stressfull action for the player, doesn't really look replayable. Could you dispell my doubts, please?

      you have one keeping app readouts, one keeping map data correct and than the commander in charge of everything but as i was watching I was wondering what the heck the player in the lower right corner is suppose to do? Is that the person you are also asking about, it seems like it is boring/easy as they have nothing to update/do

    Are the puzzles thematic? What I hated in Mansions of Madness was that the puzzles were so arbitrary and random in theme.
    Like the puzzle of the chief engineer, is it something an engineer would have to do or is it some unrelated puzzle?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  7 років тому

      the puzzle for the chief engineer is the closest thing to a MoM style puzzle in the game... it's basically a jigsaw you have to put together in real time to prevent the sinking of the ship (which everyone can work on). if you watch the 'let's play' on the ks page you can see they had to do it.

      rahdo just curious... Does either of you has a game just because you love it so much? Or is a game without your partner not even an option. :)

    • @rahdo

      i can think of one: i keep space hulk death angel because i love it and can play it solo, since Jen will never play it with me.

    Comparing this game to Capt Sonar is like comparing apples to oranges... at best.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  7 років тому

      yup, but viewers would demand the comparison, so i made it :)

      rahdo... Yeah I get that. I've seen the comparison trying to be made elsewhere as well. My comment was directed at everyone else who might harbor such a comparison.

    It sound like a sound historical wargame for serious players. I will check it out. Capt Sonar I couldn't stand and will never replay.

    We need to address the elephant in the room... We will be playing as the nazis???

    • @Mjoelnnir
      @Mjoelnnir 7 років тому +11

      Well, no, not really. You are playing the marine. Like the Wehrmacht it was part of a fascist regime but unlike the SS was not a direct part of the government and therefor not politcly involved. Just following orders. Only Staff members of the SS was prosecuted after the war, none of the Wehrmacht and the marine for exactly that reason.

      Correct. They were doing their duty and were very brave men. A good explanation above ∆∆

    • @dddmmm21
      @dddmmm21 7 років тому +3

      So actually yes, you are representing the german nazi regime in the game, thanks for the confirmation... If the actual people there were personally involved with politics or ideology, that does not matter at all... A torpedo from a non-nazi german hurt as much as one from a nazi one... My point is, wasn't there a better theme for this game? The game will obviously fund because it is so different and gimmicky, but the marketing choice is mind-blowing...

    • @Mjoelnnir
      @Mjoelnnir 7 років тому +23

      Honestly, if people from poland are fine with it (the creators), you should be, too.

    • @dddmmm21
      @dddmmm21 7 років тому +2

      That is just plain ridiculous... Listen, if you want to fund it, go for it...
