That was sweet. I always love the pre-dookie stuff. Did you guys notice that Tre said "we're going to write a rock opera" and then mike said "we're gonna call it Jimmy." They were joking around but, shit, 11 years later, it's pretty true.
September 16, 1993, they were joking around about having a rock opera about a guy named Jimmy 11 years and 5 days later, they have a rock opera about a guy named Jimmy!
I actually like the interviewer. She handled their antics well, and back then GD were unknown, so she didn't have to suck up to them. THEY were the ones getting free publicity, but she didn't flip out and refuse to interview them, she played along.
This was fun to watch. I loved it when Billie "grabbed" the interviewer's bottle, and she didn't realize what he was doing and thought he wanted a drink. LOL
They were joking at the time obviously, but funny how it worked out. For those who don't know, Green Day were referencing their appreciation of The Who's Rock Opera Tommy ('mmy' name etc.) Tre's Keith Moon like drumming for Dookie & their song Chump wigging out ending & then blending into the next song Longview was another nicely executed nod to that band.
Oh wow! Now along with all their talents, they can see the future? That is just freaky! When I heard Tre say 'rock opera' that just about blew my mind!
They grew up, got married, had kids, and matured. Life happens. But saying their music today is no good is ridiculous. It's incredible, considering they aren't snot nosed brats anymore. 40 years old and still whaling and having fun.
If it was talentless, both you and I would be making it right now and getting some sort of penny. I don't care for it, but there is obviously some talent behind it.
Janeane Doe Shut up, Green Day are more awesome than ever now. Don't need to feel sorry for anyone. I'm very pleased to check out how they have been before, I would liked to have been there as well but no way I'm complaining. What matters is I'm a fan right now and will keep being till the end. You got to follow them from the beginning and say you miss them? Well they've always been around, so I don't understand. I only miss them from end of last tour and will be happier than ever when their next album comes out.
Aw, Billie is so cute in this interview! Well, he's cute in everything, but besides a picture of him when he was five, this is the youngest I've seen him. And he looks really cute with his cheeks full of food. I don't know if that's a weird thing to say, but I'm not taking it back. I love them.
what i find funny about this interview really...is the fact that at about 3:25 Tre makes a joke about having a Green Day Rock Opera....and Look what we have now..lol
I love watching this interview. The first time I saw it online was about 10 years ago. I’ve watched it maybe eight times since. I love watching them goofing around. They’re all so cute in their younger years.❤
that's the way they've had to become, unfortunately. now that they're famous, they're not really allowed to be themselves or act the way they want to, in fear that the general public is gonna hate them or some sort. plus, no one wants you to sign a record deal with them if you act the way you wanted to. they only care for the really serious and tough music creators and that's just how they gotta be to fit in. love them to death, always have and always will, but it's so unfortunate that they're not allowed to act the way they did in the 90's anymore because that's just not what's allowed or liked. plus, again, I think they turned themselves more serious after American Idiot, as well. you can just sorta tell, idk.
These guys r sooo funny!!! Gotta love Green Day!! My fav band!! i love them sooo muucchhhh!! Ha I love how Billie says "I'm just kidding he'd never see this"
I loved this! And Billie and Tre sharing fries was adorable. And Mike being a book...haha cute. Whatever Billie was eating looked kinda gross. Them brown slabbie thingys...what were they? hmmm...I'm putting this in my favies.
@iloveSMandGD Billie Joe's interview with some old dude, it's on the sight. He was like "Our old masters got stolen so we said, why don't we write a punk opera in like two weeks for fun.But the songs actually turned out good"
Looks like Billie is eating a chimichanga or something mexican with a side blue corn tortilla chips... Someone in the comments said they looked like burnt chips.
i think its funny how tre is making jokes about them having a rock opera, and look at them now :D god i loveee this!! and i love how i wasnt even born yet :P lol I was born 28 days later.
love it so fucking young hard to belive and to think i was not even born until 7 years later wierd billie seems like he is having a good munch and he has a brilliant way of shutting the interviewer up Mike and Tre are just fucking about being amazing
yea but Jimmy was an actual rock opera (by a band who's name escapes me). still, when i first heard that it was quite awesome! i love it when they joke around about things that years later actually happen xD
I agree with you Mr Hurt & were the same age you've misunderstood me completely but I dont know how I can say it any clearer. What used to be a joke for them, is reality 10 years later.
They were friends with a lot of the bands on that label and played with them. Lagwagon, Strung out, NOFX, Propagandhi, and No use They played with them a bunch which is why you also see Tre with a fat wreck shirt in the same era
@@punkrockstormchaserYes! I made that initial comment years ago as I was getting into all those bands. I always enjoy seeing them still being supportive of the smaller groups.
@@DrummingMoose I actually have pictures of some of those shows they even played with ten foot pole when they were under their old name scared straight
Interviewer: "Who were some of your biggest influences?"
Mike: "Marijuana."
"smoking my inspir-...atioooon" - Longview
actually if you look billie says it
i love how they joke about a rock opera, not even realizing that a decade later they created one of the best rock opera's of all time haha
Trever Smith They even called it Jimmy.
At the time they realized rock operas were lame
I was thinking the same thing, a rock opera called jimmy...hmmm
That was sweet. I always love the pre-dookie stuff.
Did you guys notice that Tre said "we're going to write a rock opera" and then mike said "we're gonna call it Jimmy." They were joking around but, shit, 11 years later, it's pretty true.
Yeah, hahaha
Saint Jimmy was born
billie looks so damn cute here

September 16, 1993, they were joking around about having a rock opera about a guy named Jimmy
11 years and 5 days later, they have a rock opera about a guy named Jimmy!
Yeah, omg
It always makes me giggle when Tre mentions a "Rock Opera called Jimmy" and they all laugh. XD

thats si creepy wtf lol
This was fun to watch. I loved it when Billie "grabbed" the interviewer's bottle, and she didn't realize what he was doing and thought he wanted a drink. LOL
I love Mike from Green Day, Sloppy Fucking Joe and Tré the Tour Manager. xD
That's the most I've ever heard Mike talk
*"Chek him out. He's a book!"* - best pun ever 10/10 :D
Did they mentioned a rock opera called Jimmy or something
yes they did
He’s the protagonist in Quadrophenia by The Who
I was at this show. They opened for Bad Religion.
Oh my god. Billie is adorable.
I love how they're laughing at the very idea of them having a rock opera...ten years before they made American Idiot xDDD
22 years ago today...
I was 3 in that moment

definitely my favorite interview of them
Almost sounds like Mike's playing "Misery"
Interviewer is defiantly hitting on mike
Joe Straccia 😂
He did say to check him out cuz y'know, he's a book
Oh wow! Now along with all their talents, they can see the future? That is just freaky! When I heard Tre say 'rock opera' that just about blew my mind!
this is the green day i remember....i feel bad for you young kids of today. green day was awesome up until late 90's....i miss them!

I miss the good old days.. now it's just talentless unts unts "music".

I'm Ray can't be more agree

I just love how Billie Joe is just sitting there the whole time mowing down on food and looking cool xD
That's not really an interview if anything it's a nice hangout.
Billie Joe Armstrong is a legend hands down.
i was two years old
mike has amazing potential to be an 80s star with that band in his hair...
Billie's dreads were awesome... so was his crooked teeth!
I know
Billie is so cuteeeee
I was 2 months old to the day when this was made and who knew they would be my favorite band.

I love watching this interview. The first time I saw it online was about 10 years ago. I’ve watched it maybe eight times since. I love watching them goofing around. They’re all so cute in their younger years.❤
I loved it when Billy did his hair like that. Dreads or a new color every time we see saw him in a new interview.
I miss how we never get this up close and personal with the guys, nowadays it's just them sitting or standing there yessing the interviewer to death.
that's the way they've had to become, unfortunately. now that they're famous, they're not really allowed to be themselves or act the way they want to, in fear that the general public is gonna hate them or some sort. plus, no one wants you to sign a record deal with them if you act the way you wanted to. they only care for the really serious and tough music creators and that's just how they gotta be to fit in. love them to death, always have and always will, but it's so unfortunate that they're not allowed to act the way they did in the 90's anymore because that's just not what's allowed or liked. plus, again, I think they turned themselves more serious after American Idiot, as well. you can just sorta tell, idk.

These guys r sooo funny!!!
Gotta love Green Day!!
My fav band!! i love them sooo muucchhhh!! Ha I love how Billie says "I'm just kidding he'd never see this"
there wasnt much to be known about them they were barely starting out.
they still played with really hardcore punk/anarcho punk bands.
I loved this! And Billie and Tre sharing fries was adorable. And Mike being a book...haha cute.
Whatever Billie was eating looked kinda gross. Them brown slabbie thingys...what were they? hmmm...I'm putting this in my favies.
Mike talking about Dookie: "...songs that please everybody... except for parents!" ahahahahah fucking true
"It same 3 chords"-Mike LMFAO
"Name some of your influences."

i love it when they joke around about things that years later actually happen xD
this was before i was even born
21st Century Breakdown is one too. They made 2 rock operas
Billie literally the entire interview
Chowing down on his food with his mouth stuffed
I agree with you Mr Hurt & were the same age you've misunderstood me completely but I dont know how I can say it any clearer. What used to be a joke for them, is reality 10 years later.
Thumbs up is GDA brought u here!
I love this interview
Wait, they said they had a rock opera and a song called "Jimmy"?
Doesn't sound familiar? AI!
3:20 little did they know that in less than 15 years, this would come true. O.o "his name is jimmy" *concocts obscure conspiracy theory*
I was 3 days old.
i was 6 months old..
1:32 Fat Wreck Chords sticker
They were friends with a lot of the bands on that label and played with them. Lagwagon, Strung out, NOFX, Propagandhi, and No use
They played with them a bunch which is why you also see Tre with a fat wreck shirt in the same era
