Excellent Job on the stairs and bathroom. You do need a mirror in the bathroom for your beautiful wife and daughters. I love how the whole cabin is so rustic, keeping in style with the location. One thing I would add if you have the room is a shelf so you can store soap and towels in the bathroom. Just a thought. Your cabin is so beautiful and it goes without saying that, it is such a great achievement for one man to build. A family paradise for sure.
When you do your bedroom addition (off the dining room & bathroom side of the house) Use the wall on the left as you enter to make a linen closet for your towels, etc., for the bathroom. The rest of that wall you could use to make your clothes closet. (EVERY woman needs a clothes closet...LOL ♥)
The usual beautiful, excellent craftsmanship. I'm obviously not a pioneer woman. The bathroom would be an essential. And until the bedroom was finished, a bed, next to the bath, instead of the dining room table. Yep...a scaredy cat. The loft would too risky in the middle of the night.
Thank you for showing the bathroom build today. I’ve watched your channel since your first cabin build. The building is my favorite thing. While I understand the need to share your knowledge of prepping and other self reliance skills, I’m really happy to see that you haven’t stopped sharing your craftsmanship. It’s very motivating to me to watch your skills at work. - Willa Campbell, Iowa
As a Kid I loved that 3AM walk to the outhouse, especially during winter. I'm 80 years old and I remember doing it in rural Texas. Temps in the 20's or thirties were bad enough. Expedienced 30 Below in Korea, So I have some idea. Love your talent and Creativity.
I love that bathroom. That vanity with the copper-coloured basin, the bathtub and matching towel rail in a cosy candle lit cabin. The veneer cabinet doors, and the counter-top... excellent.
Have so enjoyed following your progress over the last several years. It gives us a greater sense of appreciation for the hardships our ancestors endured as homesteading settlers 400 years ago.
James, as a cityslicker, It,s hard for me me to imagine the lifestyle and living you've chosen for yourself and those you love, however, i've been glued to your channel from the very beginning in your off grid, R A W lifestyle. At me age (76), it would not be a choice for me, however at an earlier age I might have taken the plunge. As your project evolves, it amazes me how you use the environmental resources to make the project more 21st century Than most. Indoor plumbing, bathtub/shower, heating, ventilation and sooo many other creature comforts. It's mind boggling to me how you work around the rustic hurddles to make this work for you and your family. You're amazing ! I hope that in the future, I can help in anyway, to further, assist and support your vision, plans and dreams for a better, more sustainable life for mankind. You are just amazing James. AMAZING ! ! ! ! !
Great job, Shawn. Be careful you're not getting any younger. Am 63 and did a lot of heavy work over the years, and I can still do it, but I sure feel the pain now. Take care.
Wow! That is the coziest most beautiful cabin bathroom I have ever seen! Nice job on the retractable ladder. @ 25:32 Just lovely. The porch, the wood, the snow, Cali and Shawn! What a vision of peace and solitude.
Your sense of style and strategy is so amazing! I’m still at a loss as to where the bathroom is in the caving. Now the best was the use of white birch to canvas the sides of bathroom counter! Brilliant!
Looks like winter has come to stay….bathroom and access stairs, definitely a plus for the family. Callie is so very beautiful and just a joy to watch her. Blessings and light!
Hello Sir, I really do hope you are able to read this comment. I have recently been watching you. And I have subscribed to your channel.. I listen to everything you say. I am 62 now, but I have always wanted to live a life as you do. And living vicariously through you, or gathering information on how you do things…To maybe help somebody else in something that I have learned from you. my point is you have been blessed, I am not envious of your life, I am grateful and thankful, for you and your family. It brings me joy to watch you, and although I am older, and I may never be able to be where you are, I am still gathering your information. Still enjoying every moment of all your hard work. And thankful that there are still people in the world like you. may the Lord bless you and your family. And I mean that with all my heart.❤ I am thankful that you are such a wonderful man. And truly happy for you and your family. For me .. I find joy and peace in your videos.. and I look forward to them.. bless you, sir..
No wonder you have retreated to spend so much time in the wilderness. You are a craftsman with the deep soul of an artist. It takes a lot of peace and quiet to to give it free rein.
I put in a point t at my camper and we used an auger to go about 18 ft by hand. It was really easy. By the way, the ground competition is sand. Just a thought.
Additionally note: at my older brother's primitive house in northern Michigan he had an old hand turn auger that was 5-6' long and a little bigger than his well drive tip and we used it to drill through the difficult layer with small rocks and roots and then dropped in the drive end screen assembly contraption and drove it to the depth he wanted. That's been many years ago but I am sure if you know any blacksmiths they could wrap you a nice spiral cutting edge around a 15mm shaft that has a hammered tip on it and you could auger through the hard pack. I have passed all my blacksmiths tools and forge down to sons and grandchildren.
Absolutely beautiful! The birch bark, copper sink, it all lends together. Your wife and daughters will love it. The pull-down stairs will absolutely work, I installed a set in my lofted 12×16 tiny house. Love what you're doing 😊
Been watching you over the years building your vision for you , your beautiful dog and family from my wheelchair here in Hawaii' really an adventure for sure and thanks for it all.
Shawn to say you are an artist would be an understatement! I am in awe everything I see you creating something new at your cabin. I had no clue you could process birch bark down the way did like that. Whether you know it or not you’re a fantastic teacher. Much love and respect! Here’s to a great year!
Great lookin wood work!! Awesome!! The stairs are a good fix..they can be stained To match your walls n such... Bathroom is now good in winter weather!! Thanks for sharing!! C ya on the next video !! 🐺🧙♂️🦊
I know Sometimes once a Room or Wall or something canned or your garden is worked on it's a large part of Survival ! It's like a Story of when families would accomplish the finishing a days work and sitting down at the table for dinner and bonding with stories of that day! Even when their is tribulations the family is first! So all of these things we do are Our Survival!
I do like that your family's safety comes first. Shows your character. I installed one of those pull down stairs in my garage and had to ADD about 10 cm to the bottom rung. It was a bit of a stretch for my wife but she got used to it.
SHAWN & OUR CALI this sink looks like the old one in the sauna it is great looking !!! Keep sharing the skills here on the You tube it is much needed now days Shawn !!!
We had a ladder like that leading to our attic. One day we got a call from the kids who used to live in the house before us, asking if they could see the house again since they were in the neighborhood. It was the sound of the ladder coming down that triggered most of their memories of their mom, who had since passed away. Just seeing the ladder you installed conjured up all these memories of 50 years ago.
I'm serious I will never understand it I can't never figure it out but when I was a kid I had dreams of my life going that way but due to wrong choices or what ever just never happened for me not even close but I appreciate being able to see it threw you
Thank you for sharing the process of installing a bathroom in a wooden cabin, which is very unique and impressive. Thin pieces of wood bark are separated and covered to create natural wood grain.
hello, your beautiful works deserve appreciation, build new houses every day so that we can enjoy visiting your masterpiece, have better days ahead and always be safe.i am kamran from iran.
This maybe is a funny extra to comment on, but I appreciated that you and your wife still prefer to use the outhouse- that the inside compost toilet is a convenience for visitors who might want a 'little more convenience and comfort.' I am 65, and up until I was four years of age, our family only had an outhouse. I thought that having to use an outhouse would be a hardship, but my father continued to use the outhouse into his later years. Now when I see what raw sewage is doing to the world, I wish that everyone would do their part wherever they can. Your natural way of living is an inspiration. You have all the comfort you need or want, but at the same time you are doing what you can to live in harmony with the environment.
my growin up home in ia,had an outhouse til i was in highschool, 1,000 pardons as for 'raw sewage' we had a bag of line that was used to ensure it was composted as much as possible..jsyk..
Nothing wrong with a ladder. It can be out of the way when not needed! Just because you are a master craftsman doesn't mean you have to to build everything always!!

Always great work. Been watching since almost the start of the channel. I Didn’t have little to no carpentry skills but from watching all the things accomplished in the past years from this channel inspired me to take a chance at it myself. I’ve accomplished many things since. Build my own porch then start a mild wood working business building sliding farm house doors, decks and steps, shutters, bed swings fixing to build another big porch and pool deck in back project. Thank sir for your inspiration and everything time you make coffee it never fails even when I don’t want any watching you make some on that wood burning stove makes me make a pot 😂✊🏻

Yep, I get it. A rustic and handmade ladder will be great, but for now (and maybe for good) a coat of stain on the HD ladder is fine! With the base of the extended ladder mere feet from the master bedroom entrance, maybe this setup is ideal in the long run.

That's what I have in my house. A folding staircase up to the attic. I don't remember when my dad put it in. Before that, we used a folding ladder.
I put in a point t at my camper and we used an auger to go about 18 ft by hand. It was really easy. By the way, the ground competition is sand. Just a thought.

Micro-hydro units might be a tad too unsightly for this aesthetic.
I don’t think the waterfall is on his property, or if it is it is too far away.
