A statement of purpose or SOP, is a critical piece of a graduate school application that tells admissions committees who you are, what your academic and professional interests are, and how you'll add value to the graduate program you're applying to. IMPORTANT: The tips in this video are only applicable when a university asks for BOTH an SOP and a PS, like the University of Michigan does. Also, many universities will not even ask for your journey in your personal statement, and will only ask for the challenges you faced in your education and your experience with diversity. In which case, it becomes more like a diversity statement.

Hey Sachin,You differentiated between SOP & PS but in some universities I found something like diversity essay, letter of motivation, personal history statement, cover letters. Are these completely different terms or do they have same meaning like SOPs or PS?
Respected sir,
Please make a video on fall 2024 also. I am an early bird and very much interested for masters program in USA.
Could you please make a video about deadlines, timelines, tips for fall 2024
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙂
Can we add personal statement in supporting documents section even if perosnal statement is not mandatory to complete the application?
Can we include the courses we have completed during the time of graduation while applying for PhD program? Or should we just include the courses done only while pursuing master's degree?
For a PhD app, it's best to stick to what you did in your master's. Also, don't list out your courses. Pick the best 1 or 2 that you really enjoyed, discuss why, and how they may have shaped your career trajectory. Alternatively, you can skip describing your courses altogether. It's not necessary.
Hello Sachin, the essay prompt in my application states "Prepare a Statement of Purpose explaining your interest in our program, academic/professional goals, and areas of interest" , so should I refrain completely from sharing any other information?
Not necessarily. Typically in a big essay (especially SOP), you will have room to discuss your background and how that relates to your interest areas and goals. If it's a smaller essay (around 500 words), make this part like 1 paragraph max and focus the rest on what they actually ask.
