Fly patterns I have caught a ton of bass on crayfish, mouse, and just recently on a San Juan worm. I just tied a bunch of your flip flop pattern poppers and will be using them next week on one of my favorite bass lakes here in Kansas. Love the channel man!
Thanks for giving folks the heads up with the advice about reels and getting a spare spool now when you buy a reel, 8wts in particular. I found out the hard way recently buying an older 8wt reel. I can not find a spare spool for it. 🤦🏻♂️ LOL
In Georgia I get WF taper floating loop end. Leader to fly (and no less than ) 8 foot to 10 foot. And the reel to me is just the line holder so i can go with the $99 special or even the $59. good video!
I have caught more bass on the following flies . A brown diving muddler , white or chartreuse long tail poppers, the classic mouse , frog fly with legs . and finally, a sinking fly that mimics a salamander for mid spawn .
Great video man! Click, watch, learn...it's that easy!!! Question for you: do you have a particular brand and/or model drift/raft boat you use??? Really looking at all the brands and manufacturers out there but want expert opinions please. Thanks again, and keep them videos coming!!!

Hey Alvin, awesome videos man! I heard you mention your leader for your bass setup if 50# butt, 35# mid and 20# tippet, what is the approximate length of the leader you typically tie and what are the lengths of the component sections? Thanks a ton!
@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing You might like this. I hate itty bitty flies of any kind. I don't mind that I can't see them on the water. That goes with the territory. But I do mind tiny hooks and gossamer-thin tippets. A few years ago I said the hell with it, got a bunch of size 18 blue wing olive wet flies, and tied a piece of 5x to the hook of a Stimulator. Stimmie stops or disappears, fish has taken the BWO. But the Stimmie eventually gets soaked. So I started using a small panfish popper, white or orange. The kind you get in a pack of 12 at a big box store. I get some funny looks from the die-hard trout guys -- who are still trying to tie on their size 48 BWO on 17X tippet.
What about rod action, say for a popper and a streamer...how important is it in regards to Hookset, casting etc....fast vs moderate vs slow/glass etc...or does it not matter other than whatever you like best or are proficient with...thanks
This is great Alvin, I'm a total gear fishing geek & really enjoyed your presentation, good material! I'm sharing this with my fly fishing club Fly Fishing Women of Minnesota!
I'll be the odd man out and say that a 5wt rod can work for bass fishing. I use my 5wt on rivers while wading to fish for bass, usually with a sink tip line and streamers but if I get onto any calmer water I have a floating line and poppers to use. The only thing is (and you mentioned this) is that I can't really throw any super large flies. But I've still caught some decent sized bass on a 5wt, the fight is super fun too. Might look into a 7wt rod tho, would be nice to try and target some bigger fish that I might be missing out on.
Dude, I watched your 1st episode that I came across by coincidence,,,the whole video was full of great info for beginners like me but one thing i took and implemented right away while testing my new fly rod and real combo this morning. I hooked a 16 incher bass and instead of pulling my rod up, I pulled the line…..I wish I can post the pics here. dude, thank you so much for the knowledge and the tips you have provided. I am watching your 2nd episode now lol!
As an age 77 senior, I wade fish for trout, but want to step up to a 7 or 8 weight fly rod system for bass. I do not own a boat, so shore and wade fishing will be my presentation method. Having fly fished for decades, I am wondering if on of my 9 foot bamboo three piece rods would work for bass. These rods are generally 3-piece 7 weights, cast well, and have good reserve power. The down side can be that the guides may be small to accommodate today's fly lines. The classic bamboo rods were designed for silk fly lines which are smaller in diameter, so I may have to remove the original guides and whip finish larger stripper, snake, and tip guides on one of these rods. The bamboo rods are heavier than the graphite fly rods these days, so a full day of casting requires some conditioning which I am up for. I will also get a 9 - 10 foot bass 4 piece bass fly rod in case the cane proves too much to handle. What weight and length graphite bass fly rod may I consider for large mouth bass in lakes and small mouth bass in smaller rivers, keeping in mind that I wade using breathable chest waders? I tie my own flies and make leader systems. Ron, NE Iowa.
Nice set up the Helios 3D with the Nautilus reel , I also use the 3D 8wt super versatile , bass , bonefish , red fish , permit , roosters etc . The other rod ii use is the TFO BVK another great rod . Like your leader set up , like you I tie my own much cheaper and you can do it all in fluorocarbon. What don’t you like about the Nautilus reels ? I have been looking at them , I see a lot of salt water guys with them . Another informative video , keep them coming .
Love the new videos, Alvin. Speaking of, what video is running on the screen behind you with the statement “ everything you were about to witness happen within one hour of downtown Austin.” Big fan of the Howler Bros gear as well.
Hi Alvin Have you thought about doing a video on reading bass waters? I'm new to FF for smallmouth. I'm in NJ and the rivers are small to medium size, not many big boulders, some down trees and bends. Can wade just about any of them which I like.
What if I’m sitting down in a kayak and I have to cast from that position will the length of the rod matter, I went to a flyfishing event at a lake. I found out that it was pretty challenging to cast sitting down but also my first time fly fishing only had a 3wt and and 11wt or 13wt Could you recommend a rod I’m thinking of a 5wt or 6wt I don’t know if length would make a difference
Hi Alvin thanks for the great info. I'm just learning how to fish for SMB in rivers during the summer. Seems I've had more success fishing edges of current like I would for trout. Can you talk about where to find them. Should I avoid slow water? Where to use poppers on rivers?
Hey Alvin.....Great Video. A quick question...at the end you showed your set up, and then talked about the line you have on specifically your leader. Do you have your tapered leader, then tippet then your fly you showed, or are you just tying that fly to the end of your tapered leader. I am not 100% clear on the leader tippet process.. Thanks and great video.
@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing yeah I fly but alot or rivers . I want to get into flying for bass and larger fish like northerns here in Colorado. I euro also so i was wondering if you tie your leaders like euro. Bigger backing like 8ft 20lb then 15lb to 10lb.
Thank you Alvin for this informative and well presented series! Question about using your popper fly when blind casting - is there any benefit to attaching a small unweighted streamer a couple of feet behind the dry, similar to a a dry dropper rig for trout? Seems like it might increase the odds of inducing a strike but maybe not worth the chance of getting a tangle?
So do you fish top water all day? Concentrate topwater around the dawn and dusk timeframe, and streamers in the heat of the day? Depends on the season? Thanks for the videos!
Yeah it depends on the season. Prime time is topwater all day. Mostly spring and fall. Winter is pretty much all sinking lines. Heat if summer topwater early and late.
What's your opinion on fiberglass rods for bass fishing? I got a great deal on a 7/8 fiberglass rod, but I'm finding the 7ft 6in length a bit limiting for casting bigger flies and getting much distance. Now I'm thinking I should have gone with a 9ft graphite. Enjoyed your video. Thanks, Jeremy
I know a few guys who love fishing for bass with glass rods. Depending on the weight you may have to scale down the flies or adjust your casting for the slower action.
I haven't used them myself, but I have seen a few people use them and the seem to help. We do have to deal with twisted lines a lot so I will have to give them a shot. Seems like a good way to add tippet as well.
Does everything you’re saying about leaders and tipper and tying your own stay the same if it’s a 5 wt rod or how is it different maybe is a better question? I’m still mostly catching panfish and some bass but it’s the setup I have right now.
Thank You! Nice and simple. I have a 8 wt sage with a 6 wt nautilus X. I know its not ideal based on your video but will that help me cast a lighter line further?
It may, as long as you can load the rod with the line. Shouldn't be a problem getting an 8 weight on that reel though. Might have to take off a little backing.
Hey man, can you clarify your leader setup? Are you attaching tippet material to Tippet material? So 40lbs tied to 30lbs tied to 20lbs? Love the videos, keep them coming!
Not asking me, but I figured I'd help out. Yes. You can use any monofilament line. The tippet is simply the last part of the leader. But tippet material can be used as the leader itself. He goes a little heavier than I do, but that's personal preference. I use 30#mono to 20#, then 15#, then depending on fly size usually 0x or 1x tippet.
This is a great series! Perfect timing as I am trying to give trout fishing a rest, been looking into bass and other species. What line are you using for your bass rig?
If you were mostly catching 10-12" bass in a river (Brazos, Colorado, etc.), would you take a 6wt too or just do everything with an 8wt? My thoughts are the fish would be more fun on the 6wt but the 8wt makes it easier to cast something like a size 6 popper for distance. Just curious what you think.
Yeah I always take the 6 weight. I'll throw a big popper on the 8 weight some days even though I know I will catch less fish for the chance at a few big ones. Just depends on what kind of mood I'm in.

We use them quite a bit during the winter. In the bigger rivers especially it helps to get down in the deeper holes.

Yeah I always take the 6 weight. I'll throw a big popper on the 8 weight some days even though I know I will catch less fish for the chance at a few big ones. Just depends on what kind of mood I'm in.
Great work my man. I just messaged you about getting out on a trip soon.
