I'd be interested to see what goes into fly selection when you're on the river. Not necessarily specific types of flies but color, sink rate, where in the water column you fish it.
Hey Alvin, I'm a big fan of your videos it really helps a lot! I'm from Quebec, Canada and I was wondering if the same techniques apply to the Big White North for Bass. I was also wondering if you're using different retrieve techniques depending on the fly you are fishing. Let’s say I am a big fan of woolly bugger. Will it be the same stripping pattern that I would use for a popper, or a clouser minnow? Thanks again!
This is the best video series about fly fishing for bass since Dave Whitlocks stuff in the early 80’s. That’s a long time ago and a very high standard. It’s very engaging and fun to watch. Almost as much fun as actual fishing.
Thanks for the information on Bass fishing !!!!! We do a lot of bass fishing here in Idaho along with trout fishing! Keep bringing more information and techniques on bass fishing
holy cow! I stumbled onto your channel searching for help with Fly Fishing in general, and found; perhaps the best Fly Fishing UA-cam channel on the net. Ive watched all three beginner segments and appreciate all the info..very helpful. All Ive got to do now is get my casting skills up to and save a few $$ to book a guided trip with ya., My goal is to catch a fish any kind of fish but preferably a Redfish, on the fly. I live in Houston originally from New Jersey. I fish from a skiff mostly salt water but started out here in Texas fishing for Bass fish which is really my first love.
Hi Mr. Alvin, my name is Ryan. I absolutely love your videos. I would love it if you would make a video on casting. It would be great to see your message and tricks! Also I would really love to meet you someday. Thank you so much for your videos and inspiration!
Great stuff, especially rod tip in water and strip set. 2 suggestions; on first strike, keep line tight to move fish in first second 5 to 10 feet from cover. Keep line under casting hand finger, strip with left. 2; heavy flies need open loop but good casting means keep rod tip in one plane. You allude to use of thumb; a very tiny, quick thumb push lowers rod tip out of fly path and opens loop. The other option is to come to sudden stop and then drop rod tip inches which opens loop. But stress the complete sudden stop required before dropping rod tip. Another item for future discussion; line count down vs how leader and weighted fly sink at different rates. And then how fly sink rate effects fishing depth and fly movement. Your presentation/speaking style is very real and easy to understand; thanks again.
I haven’t even looked to see how many videos you have, or how long you’ve been doing this, but everyone interested in fly fishing should be subscribed to this channel. So good and informative!

Love your videos. I’m in Colorado and I haven’t really catch bass on the fly, I’m planning on traveling to the Carolina with my 8wt, gonna try warm water and coastal fishing.
I heard about your Chanel from huge fly fisherman and I love the vids awesome personality I am getting a 8wt to hit hit up some bass ponds in montana and use it for a streamer rod for the Maddison
I'm gonna start fishing streamers for bass for the first time this year and can already tell I'll be the guy doing the high rod trout set 🤣 will work on that strip set for sure man 👍
I encourage all my fellow trout weenies to fish more stillwater, so you can learn to strip-set instead of doing the trout set you know and love. Bonus points for learning the hybrid haul-set while fishing for tiny trout in freestones with an 8-weight. Fly rodding for bass is a great game, fantastic coverage of the basics, Alvin. Thanks for your great videos. (Don't actually do that last part, please.)
Excellent, I just got done with my son fly fishing for trout in Colorado and we are hooked on fly fishing. We do bass fish here in Texas but now we want to fly fish for bass. Great videos good discussion for us new to this. In the end it’s about laughing and fun. Keep your videos coming bid.
Born and raised Texan here, moved to PA and having great fun fresh water streams, rivers, and lakes. I just got started fly fishing (this week). I'm mostly interested in bass, but certainly multi species, love ever fish. Thanks for this information. I have loads of success locally with smaller craw fish baits on bottom during spring and summer months. Can you recommend a craw fly if you even would recommend one. Perhaps I sound silly out of lack of experience.. I dunno
Great stuff as usual Alvin! Can you please do a technique video to show bass popper / streamer fly rigs, casting methods, and how to make streamers move effectively for attracting bass? Thanks again.
Can you do a video on your favorite flies action? I've seen test tanks and "On-the-water" examples. I'm always curious as to what draws the strike from one fly over another.
Thanks Alvin, this series has helped me a bunch. I’m in Yuma Az. Where bass fishing is great on the lower Colorado. I just recently stepped up from a 5/6wt to an 8wt IN order to cast larger flies. My hook set became problematic right away. Your videos are getting me strait. (Bring on them big boys)
I'm glad you mentioned not to lip the bass. I hate to see folks breaking jass for a picture. Even seasoned angler's do it? Then throw them back? Might as well clean, and eat it at that point.
Alvin, Another great vid my man. I posted on your FB. But a Line management across seams would be great. I've lost and seen so many fish lost to line bellies. It was the hardest thing for me to learn. Once I learned that we put fish in the net at a much better pace!
Your editing grows more sophisticated with each vid...what do you think about tucking the rod in your armpit and using two hands to retrieve to encourage strip strikes? Mangum mentioned that retrieval for tarpon in a vid

My suggestion is to do some real life on the water videos of possible showing how and where exactly to find them. I usually use conventional tackle for bass because most of my lakes are pretty stained so that would be cool to get some info on that. Also fishing deep (15'-20'). Thanks for these videos. I've been looking for stuff about this topic for a while now.
Thank you, Alvin! These videos have been a great help to me, even after having bass fished with the fly rod for a few years now. All best to you and yours.
Hi Alvin. Thanks for everything you do. Your content is great. I am fairly new at fly fishing. I fish mostly bass and pike on streamers up her in Canada. I fish from the front deck of my Jon boat. I have a quick question about managing your fly line on the deck. I seem to get it caught on everything ..even when I try to be careful. Any tips on how to keep things neat and not get caught on the cast? Should I be looking at getting one of those baskets or something? Thanks Andy
Hey Alvin! Good stuff.. Hey can you go over a few leader formulas for top water and swim flies? Including how you match butt diameter to line weight (if you do so)? Thanks man and come fish smallies with me in VA! E

Thanks! awesome video. quick question when I am site fishing and the bass is just holding do you recommend letting the fly sit there or throw it pass him and strip away?
Hey Alvin, great videos. I'm looking to get into fly fishing for Bass and your information was very helpful and insightful. What rod weight would you recommend for someone who wants to start Bass fishing, and also fishing for Bonefish and other saltwater species? If possible, I would like to only buy one rod to use between the two different types. I currently only Trout fish and use a 3 to 4 weight rod. Thanks for your help.
I would get an 8 weight. That will be perfect for bonefish, redfish and bass. Later on you could get a 6 weight for bigger trout stuff or lighter bass stuff.
Love all the videos, Alvin. Thanks for everything you do. I've been fishing Shoal Creek in North Central Austin recently and the water is pretty clear so it's a lot of sight casting. I've thrown poppers and streamers such as olive wooly buggers with minimal success. They'll sometimes express interest but rarely commit. When targeting bass in clear water where do I try to place my fly? Thanks!
Man those bass can get smart. I would try to sneak up next time and cast to where you have been seeing them. By the time you see them they usually know you are there.
Hey Alvin! How do you control a breaching/leaping bass? I lost a pretty big aggressive fish yesterday on his third jump. I wasn’t able to control my slack I think.
When I tie them up they usually end up being around 7'. I'll go longer if I want to get the fly down deeper, or shorter to help throw those big topwater flies.
Hey there Alvin, I know it's been quite a while since you posted this video. But if you happen to come back and see this comment. I'd like to know what's your take on spey or skgit fishing for Bass. Have you tried it and if so do you like it?

Longer leaders or sinking leaders. Both options will help and are a lot cheaper than a sinking line.
Love the video! Do you have a favorite "sinking fly" thats your go to?
I have a streamer that I tie called a snake. It's an old striper fly that I substitute the original tail with rabbit zonker.
After that it would be a Clouser Minnow.
Alvin Dedeaux any chance of getting a video on that snake fly?
@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing Love it! We need a video of you tying the snake! Do you mix and mingle your clouser colors or generally stick to one or two?

So you strip set while fishing a popper or other topwater fly?
Yes sir!
Alvin Dedeaux interesting, thanks!
When do you favor streamer vs popper? Time of day? Or just depends on how they are feeding?
Time of year, time of day, and water temperature.
Or call madam cleo... 🤣... Warmer or mid day probably go deeper with streamers... Mornings / evenings poppers?
When it gets hot, is it better to go deep, wait til sundown and stay on top, or just stop so as not to stress them?
Go deep or fish early and late. Bass are pretty hardy when it comes to water temperature.
You rock.
Thanks!

How long is the average cast when fishing for bass
Really depends on where you are fishing. On our bigger rivers you might have to cast 40 feet all day. On smaller waters 20 feet might be a long cast.
