I like how Glenn throughout series 4 was just shat on by everyone but then when it came to the inquiry he lied his arse off, except for the stuff about Ollie, and ended out coming off the best to the committee.
When he ask Ollie to let him " come in from the cold" like hes a cold war double agent hahah"its like alien vs predator over in opposition" kills me every time
Wow Glenn gave a really good insult there! "A leak of this magnitude would require one essential item that Ollie lacks, and that's a spine." The writers for "The Thick of It," along with the cast who provide additional material, out do themselves constantly! :)
More to the point, there's some excellent character building in those final two episodes. Even more to the point, the whole show had great character building, which the finale really makes use of.
Poor Glenn, he really thought that Ollie and he were friends, only to realise that neither he nor Malcolm give a toss about him, and yet he still can't bring himself to really drop Ollie in it by accusing him of leaking, and just settles for insulting him. Glenn and Peter are the only people in the entire show with a conscience
“As we enter the third week I find Mr. Tickell’s attention seeking tent based twattery even more annoying than weeks one and two” - Peter Mannion So much for that
+TheRandomshite123 I think he was speaking more to principle. Peter refused to use the bullying story despite it being expedient to him and Glenn refuses to accuse Olly (although that said it would be somewhat self-serving him not doing that).
While I liked a few of Ollie's jokes, I found him to be the most loathsome character in this entire series. Which I believe was the intent from the writers.
UltraAporia With Malcolm Tucker, he's obviously not a nice person, but he does everything he can for the good of his party. Ollie seems like a nice person but would rob his own grandmother for personal gain
My most irritating character was Terri. Her complete obliviousness and uselessness contradict so much with her bloated sense of importance that it drives me livid. I was hoping someone would absolutely tear her apart earlier like Fergus and Glenn did later in the fourth series.
I can't stand Ollie. He and so many other characters in this series were PERSONALLY ambitious. I like Malcolm best because he's not, neither is Glen, and I like him, too.
This scene has always reminded me of the scene in The Sopranos (I think at the end of season 1) where Junior's been arrested and the Feds give him a chance to say that he was just a figurehead and Tony was really running things, but he just mocks Tony instead. The pride, contempt, resentment, and residual loyalty felt by the veteran towards the protege who screwed him over are equally well encapsulated in Glenn's final words about Ollie. Really funny and really moving.
I love Glenn, he was the kindest of all the cast in the series lol 😂 and I always felt sorry for him as a single dad whose son is disabled taking so much shit and giving as good as he got also. What a fucking legend.
I love how Ollie is getting all jittery and Goolding zeros in on him and asks: "Who leaked the e-mails?" and ollie just spills. Total coward. And Glenn's apology at the end... There's a note of true sadness there. Glen tried his ass off for what he believed in and what lasting effect did he have? Ollie as the new Malcom. Fuck.
I felt a genuine slither of discomfort when you see Ollie’s meet and greet at the end of the series, he truly devolved through the course of the series; the beaucracy and abuse hardened him from a snide jobsworth into the king of the castle
0:10 I feel so sorry for Glenn , first Hugh throws him under the bus, followed by Ollie here with Coaltion era DOSAC treating him like he doesn't exist..
It was actually Glenn that leaked though wasn't it? The enquiry about special needs schools in the early series is even more heart-breaking for Glenn :(
In fairness, Olly would have got his comeuppance after the series ended. Malcom set him up to be the new fall guy. He’d crash harder than any of them. Shame we never saw it.
you can see how this show has influenced succession, especially this scene haha. feels very much like near the end of s2 with the cruise ship enquiry. even ollie’s character reminds me a little bit of greg’s character, just more american. i don’t think jesse was a writer during this season, but i love both shows, they both work really well 🙂
I love James Smith. His work in this and then in Grandma’s House (as the fabulous “Clammy” Clive Freeman, alongside Rebecca Front again incidentally) are two of my favourite comedy performances. “I AM A MAN!” As an aside Clive is definitely what would have happened to Glenn had he accidentally killed a homeless man On Green Lane in Ilford and then become an alcoholic. I kind of see Glenn and Clive as existing as the same person, just on different time/space continuums.
If you can watch this and keep a straight face you can't be human, "slimes his way into a crack every night" god, how do they keep a straight face in the background
I always watch this scene with the idea that Glenn was both making his leaking of the email sound grandiose while also protecting Ollie with some residual compassion he may have felt for him. He could clearly have distroyed himself and Ollie but decided to leave it ambiguous.
Well, technically Malcolm wanted Ollie to make Glenn leak a PIECE of the email chain, not the whole stuff. The goal was to compromise Nicola Murray (leader of the opposition in s4) and put her out to pasture... to drink milk with the cows, presumably. The whole point of Malcolm's s4 arc was to get rid of Nicola and replace him with the party big shot (Dan Miller), because Nicola was hopeless, politically inept. A quiet bat-person. Glummy mummy. Just to quote the most popular ones. She ended up leader at the exact same moment that the universe blinked. You should really watch the whole thing, though. :)
Ollie was the most loathsome of the characters truly a repugnant character and the fact at the end he got Malcolm job pissed me off and on the fact Malcolm is the only one who gets punished pissed me off as well great show terrible ending
To be fair, Malcolm had actually broken the law by acquiring and leaking Tickel's medical records in an attempt to make the government look bad. Peter, Ollie, Terri and Glen did too by lying during the inquiry but evidence of this didn't seem to be available.
Malcolm said Ollie wouldn't last 18 months in his job. So in the end its a pyrrhic victory for him. Nobody won anything by the end, but this is the game they chose to play.
Generic comment about this being old and random in my recommendations so other people are recommended this video and can comment on how old and random it is
The main reason Malcolm was in trouble was that he was found in possession of Mr Tickel's National Insurance number and his NHS number. The fact that Malcolm had the NHS number meant that he had obtained access to Mr Tickel's medical records. It's unknown if he genuinely wanted to help Mr Tickel. When Nicola was the party leader, she wasn't willing to call the Government out on what they were doing to him. It's possible the records were leaked just to make the government look bad.
@TheRealRogerEbert The way I always understood it is Manion only leaked the fact that the records were obtained illegally - he wasn't the one who did it. In fact that could almost upgrade him from a leak to a whistleblower (although of course he only did it to get the heat off him). Generally speaking, Manion comes off as a guy with a pretty sound moral compass and dignity (which is strange to say of a Tory-in-all-but-name, but hey, that's part of what makes this show interesting). He is incompetent in a lot of ways, but he really does dislike the more "slimey" aspects of politics (see: the whole Nicola's daughter story).
0:35 that woman with dark hair & glasses in the background I'm sure is/was an extra in Skyfall (the Bond Movie) London Underground scene, on the tube as Bond runs past through the carriages... sure it was her, i could be wrong.
The only F word was.......fun. *Looks like he wants to die inside*
Glenn is fucking great. The actor that plays him is perfect.
I love him even more as Clive in Simon Amstell's little sitcom that he did.
I like how Glenn throughout series 4 was just shat on by everyone but then when it came to the inquiry he lied his arse off, except for the stuff about Ollie, and ended out coming off the best to the committee.

Big hugs
“big hugs” is simply one of the funniest lines in any TV show ever
Glenn is a proper gent. He could have shafted Ollie but he didn't. Fantastic tv.
@Bilal Khalid as they say in Brixton
@Bilal Khalid The words Glenn and Gangster together, sheer brilliance (yet true). It Tickeled me……
I don't know why but the line, The only F word is fun cracks me up.
The silence afterward is priceless.

If it wasn't for the fact he hates Tories Ollie Reeder could almost be Dominic Cummings.
3:24 The extra behind Glenn can't help but crack up at his verbal artillery.
Nice never noticed that before because I really fancy Malcolm's secretary/PA Sam - the lady sitting on the right.

This isn't Hollywood, it's what happens in the real world.
That's why I like the ending, it is very bleak and depressing which fits the black humour of the whole series.
That's politics
