  • Something a little different this week. Once a year, around the holidays, I want to share the story of a disaster that didn't happen - a tragedy that, whether through luck, the bravery of those involved, or simple good planning, was averted. In this story, everyone survives... although it's definitely a close call.

      No, he saved far more people than were in that plane. This all occurred in and over NYC on a weekday, meaning the city was full of commuters. Manhattan *alone* has a commuter-adjusted population of about 8 million people. Since the plane first had to cross the Bronx heading northwest and then swing south along Manhattan to use the Hudson for touchdown, we're talking easily 10 million people on the ground who could have been affected if anything else had gone wrong between the time the engines cut and the time the plane actually landed.
      If he'd gone with his initial plan and turned back to La Guardia Airport where the flight had started, an airport with relatively short runways and directly next to many densely-packed residential areas, it is very likely everyone in the plane and MANY thousands of people on the ground would have been killed. Diverting to Teterboro in New Jersey, the next airport suggested, would have been catastrophic also.
      He ignored dual engine failure protocol. He turned down multiple runway offers at nearby airports. He chose to attempt a very risky waterway landing (which he'd never actually attempted before) on a narrow river, filled with bridges, next to a major city, while having almost no ability to control altitude - the plane cleared the top of the George Washington Bridge by only 900 feet. And he saved not only every life in his charge on that plane, but also the lives of countless New Yorkers -- people who'd had to watch, less than eight years earlier, as two other large commercial airliners were intentionally crashed into buildings about 4 miles from the spot where he completed "the most successful ditching in aviation history" according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
      And then he calls the library to apologize about the book??? He deserves a monument.

    Sully is the *reason* why everyone survived that day, and the fact that the airline tried to tarnish his reputation and remove him from his position just because they were too afraid to admit that things just happen that you can’t control sometimes is just sickening.

      And the worst part about their attempts to do so is that in the aviation industry, the idea of any accident investigation is not to assign blame, but to ensure things don't happen again. The entire reason for it being that it ensures that people don't try and hide that things that may have been contributory factors to the accident.

Listen to the black box recordings, it is chilling and amazing at the same time. This man was simultaneously and very calmly giving options to Captain Sullenberger, advising those around him that he had an incoming emergency, clearing runways at La Guardia AND Teterboro, calling other planes/helicopters in the area for eyes on information after the jet dropped off radar, getting fire/rescue rolling to the Hudson as well as letting harbor officials know to advise ferries and river traffic of an emergent river landing. 3:19 "Unable" is the precise term that pilots are supposed use to indicate that a directive by air traffic control cannot be carried out in a safe manner. This is meant to clarify that the pilot is not refusing the directive due to insubordination, only for safety concerns. The fact that Captain Sullenberger gave this response doesn't necessarily mean it was due to being pressed for time.

      @N.I.R.A.T.I.A.S. 2 роки тому +50

      Yeah exactly, and as a former air traffic controller I will add two things. Firstly, in a situation like this you don't want or need the pilot to give you any extra information because it wastes time and rarely achieves anything. "Can you use this as a solution?" "Unable." "Okay, we'll find another one." Secondly, in a situation like this pilots are taught to focus on keeping the plane in the air as the number one priority, with maintaining communication with the ground as the third priority at best. Keeping communication to one-word responses means the pilot doesn't have to talk with air traffic control so much and can focus on the more important tasks.

      Perhaps they used the aisle chair to move them down to the door with the raft and pushed ‘em out, or someone was kind enough to carry them out to safety.

      LOL - OK, 'well' handled - not perfectly handled - they failed to close a vent that would have helped the plane stay afloat - and it would have done if someone hadn't opened the door and let water in !
      Indeed it was miraculous. If you watch the full documantary on it, there were many decisions made and many problems they overcame to make it the success it was. Probably the best ever actions of a pilot.

    I’m a plane nerd, and this is one of my favourite aviation stories (along with the Gimli Glider, British Airways Flight 009, TACA Flight 110), the calm attitude from the pilots, the amazing crew resource management, the fact Sully managed a water landing without the plane cartwheeling, checking the cabin twice to make sure nobody was left behind, and most importantly, everyone survived. It’s one hell of a story.

And then check again for good measure. Can you imagine if they had just given up and accepted their fate? There was no reason to believe any additional attempts to restart any of the 4 engines would be successful and yet...like a miracle, all 4 engines roared back to life as if nothing was ever wrong! ALMOST textbook. They did make one mistake, although it was down to time pressure and the way the emergency procedures were written: The cabin pressurization 'ditching' switch was never set. When enabled, it locks off all the cabin pressurization dump valves and regulation valves to make the aircraft as watertight as possible. This is the reason the aircraft started to sink by the tail, and why the rear exits were unusable for evacuation.
      One hopes that the emergency manual rewrite makes this step harder to miss in a crunch.

I think it's also really a sign of humility that when he had a second from the many, many things he could think of to do, the life-saving captain asked for his copilot's ideas and input. He used the word correctly. You may not have personally heard the word “ingested” used this way but it is a proper usage. Below is an abbreviated definition of the word “ingest” (ie; ingested, ingestion)
      “Ingestion is a common route taken by pathogenic organisms and poisons entering the body. Ingestion can also refer to a mechanism picking up something and making it enter an internal hollow of that mechanism, e.g. "a grille was fitted to prevent the pump from ingesting driftwood".
