State of Economy Far Worse than Govt Admits, GDP Will Shrink 29% This Year - Economist Arun Kumar

- In an interview that will come as a shock to most people and will probably be strenuously refuted by the government, one of India’s highly regarded economists has said that this financial year GDP will shrink by 29% whilst the Central government’s fiscal deficit will cross 15%. Speaking 48 hours before the budget, Prof. Arun Kumar, the Malcolm S. Adiseshiah Professor at the Institute of Social Sciences and earlier Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, says that his calculations show that in Q1 GDP shrank by 50% and not 23.9% as the government has claimed. In Q2 GDP shrank by 25% and not 7.5% as the government claims. He also says that in both Q3 and Q4 GDP will shrink by 10% each. Prof. Kumar also says that the fiscal deficit of the Central government, inclusive of off-budget items, will be over 15% whilst the combined fiscal deficit of the Central government, state governments and PSUs (what is often called the public sector borrowing requirement) will exceed 20%.

Well, I would start with admitting that I'm no expert on economics but I do have some hands-on experience of it. With my limited understanding, and with Thapars own admission, the figure 29% is a shock, and a big big shock indeed.
Having said that, what is an economic shock? how does it play out on ground? The answer is, it's devastating. People who have living memory of 2008 knows that INDn economy shrank by the odd 3% and it was so obvious on the streets. One can only wonder what would play out if it would be 30%, and we all know nothing even close to that actually happened in our real life.
With all due respect to the Professor, his knowledge and his analysis, this looks to me more like those doomsday predictions which were made for IND's Covid situation. It was said that IND would have cases in hundreds of millions and there would be deaths in millions too. Just like then, I guess the calculations are correct but the variables in the formulation and modelling is inappropriate.
Nothing is bigger than the result, the reality and the reality is that countries fall apart at even half of 29% and there's nothing of that sort playing out.

I am quite astonished to see the comment section for this video. Every video on UA-cam that I have come a crossed which criticizes the government’s incompetence, has a lot of troll from IT cell and BJP bhakts spamming in the comment section. But, this video seems to be different, probably the reason is that this interview is required an IQ more than that of the room temperature. That is why we don’t see those people here.

I've had the occasion to meet Prof Arun Kumar at his house a couple of times around 1998-1999. A very fascinating man. Long meetings those were. He used to bring out the Black Economy budget those days. And those days, the Black Economy was 100% of the White Economy according to his figures. A very competent man too.

Govt is saying economy will show growth of 11.5% during 2020-21. Is this possible. During Covid pendemic period, there was no work done in 9 months and for remaining 3 months, there are no jobs for 50% job losers in covid period, then how can we get growth from -7.5 to 11.5%?

Your channel and its shows are so dark and depressing. Tired of your gloom doom stories of this country. Economy, security, healthcare, safety, you name it and you guys have nothing positive to talk about.
Since 2014 nothing positive happened to middle and lower income population!! Price of petrol decides day to day life! In 2013 when crude oil per barrel was 140 US dollars the price of petrol per litre was 53 Rs! Since 2014 to till date the price of crude oil is ranging between 40 - 55 US dollars but the price reached RS90 PER LTRE! SO ALL CONSUMABLE DAY TO DAY HOUSE HOLD ITEMS WILL NATURALLY INCREASE BY FREIGHT CHARGES!! SO BJP WILL NEVER SHOW ACHE DIN!
These are some alarming numbers but one thing is for sure that the shrinkage would be much more than the Government's projection of 7.7%. Let's wait for a point by point rebuttal by the Government and understand the theories and assumptions that were applied to arrive at -29% vs -7.7%.

Respectfully disagree. He mentioned GDP was down 75% down in Q1.. Economic activity down doesn't mean GDP is down by same percentage. Economic activity is a part of GDP not entirely.
