  • Episode 580. Time for some peated samples to help with this snowy Spring. Both of these are great, but very different. The Valinch & Mallet was dark, rich, full of blanced wine and smoke. While the Compass Box was salty, peaty, meaty. Wow. I need more time to just relax with these! #compassbox #caolila

Oooh that No Name 3 is a beautiful beautiful dram, goes so well with some honey glazed bbq meat or you know just on it's own :) Cheers Jon 🥃

Got the snow yesterday in the Seaway but now the suns shining and it’s plus 5! Still, watching your videos this weekend and finishing up on Irish Whiskey March content, you have got me in the mood for some peat. Grabbing a dram of Sanaig to celebrate hopefully the last of the snow. Cheers Jon!

Compass Box rarely shows up here. I've tried a couple, and I like what they do with their blending. I'm a fan of salty and briny, so CB #3 would probably agree with me.
As for Caol Ila, I can usually pick it out even in a blind tasting. It's distinctive. Had a chance to enjoy a dram of an old Signatory release of the unpeated version this past fall. It was a beautiful thing.
I can't mix my peats. They overwhelm each other on my palate. I always leave it for last, or simply have just one on it's own.
Also experience lingering effects of many smoky whiskies, and I find that I drink far more water while sipping them.
Love your descriptors! Fun, and also really gets the notes across.
May you wake up to far less snow by morning. Looks like a midweek melt may be on the way...
    Cheers Jon 🥃🥃

Mixing peated whisky like this certainly creates questionable tasting notes! The CB was really briny! The weather does indeed look like it's improving! Thanks for dropping in, and I hopw you have a great week ahead, Cheers!

Slapped around by some kelp! 😂
I’m a peat fan, but the brine came out too much for me on this one. I really enjoy Laphroaig and it’s virtually 75% of this blend. Not sure how much the smaller contributions would influence overall, but I’ve struggled to like mortlach and clynelish which are 7.5% and 6.0% of this blend. Still happy to have the data point in my tasting experience and to share with others. :)

This was a great sample for me. I love the meaty nature of Mortlach, and the tropical fruit and wax from Clynelish. That brine though. Wow, someone turned it up here. I'm not a big sushi guy, but this tasted like seeweed all day! Thanks for the taste, cheers!
